I'm just passing by but damn, that first 1 track is catchy as hell! I'd quite happily listen to an albums worth of this sort of stuff!
Kind words thank you
When presented with other peoples recordings I usually listen to about ten seconds' worth. I listened to both these tracks all the way through, so there you go. Good recordings that need more time spent on them to sound great, but you know that already. Maybe add a bit more air overall in the top end. Love the bass sounds (they'd better be good, really) though if being super-picky I'd say a little more punch wouldn't hurt. But you know that, too. Good playing overall, you've kept a bit of restraint - but I'd go further down that road if possible and deliberately strip it back even more; this will open up the sound and arrangements and make it all much easier to deal with. Less is more for sure. Really good effort though, everyone sounds like they're on it. Look forward to the next.
As with everyone else who's posted, I really appreciate you've taken the time to listen and comment The bass definitely needs a bit more punch and i do need to lay back a bit on the "busyness" as dad also touched on. This is my first experience of playing in a three piece and I can be a little over zelous as there is so much space for me to do so. I'm trying to strike a balance of interesting parts and holding the groove. I think over time as we write more songs we'll naturally tend towards the kind of material that works best for us, ie. the more stripped back stuff. I'm fairly pleased with it as a starting point... I think we'll learn alot from the process of getting these tracks down and really listening to them as to how to push things forward. The two tracks we havent put out yet are a bit heavier so I'll be interested to see how they compare. Appreciate your comments
I gave 'em both a listen, and didn't regret it. Although comments are not specifically requested, I'd offer a couple of remarks, if I may. Firstly the less good; get that out of the way..? The bass sounds more towards the sub frequencies, which, even listening with a decent headset, makes it somewhat indistinct. Excessively busy in the first track; much more restrained for the second; an improvement. Not overly enchanted with the snare, either, which I'd qualify as 'clanky'; character, certainly, but not the best choice for the songs, I felt. That's all for the panning, all the rest is praise and encouragement. Clean recording, quality composition aided by 'open' arrangements, very competent and authoritative vocals; an altogether solid formation with all the elements reunited. It would not be difficult to extend the 'live' versions of both to a bit longer than the 'FM Airplay' studio versions without abusing of the audience. If there are other performances, either 'in the can' or in progress, they'll have to be pretty darned good, as the bar here is high indeed. This is the starting point..? It could go far. A quality product of which all can be rightly proud. Well done, all.
Thanks Dad, quality assessment as ever... Your two comments are the exact two comments our drummer made upon hearing the tracks for the first time. I think with the snare we suffered from a poor source sound, the next recording effort we'll take a bit more time I exepct, this first attempt was a "do it all in a day" job. The bass comment also mirrors the first thing our drummer said about the mix. The compression has filled it out but it's lost a bit of definition in the process... it's all a learning curve and the purpose of the recording was really to see what we need to address before doing a full bore recording next year sometime.
I liked them both - congrats. You now have to keep us updated with all the news and when more material will be available!
Thanks very much, appreciate you taking a listen I'm hoping they will cobble something together for youtube for the other two tracks we did, as I actually thought they were our strongest two. I think they are planning on doing a bandcamp type thing for the whole demo, I'll post a link when it's all up and running
Some cool bass sounds there. I think sub 3 minutes is short for a song especially one that has so much commercial potential. I like the vocal melody, some interesting choices. Some of the lyrics I might have heard elsewhere recently though, the bit about the dress on the floor. The second song is probably less interesting but with wider appeal perhaps. I think the disco style drums makes it sound very familiar and you'll get a bunch of listeners. Good luck.
Thanks for taking the time to listen and post a few comments it's much appreciated. I didn't realise how short the songs were until we tracked them in the studio... The other two we did in the session are a bit longer (but not by much), but yes it's definitely something we'll look at going forward. Lyrics aren't my depertment I steer well clear of that! This is a new project and we're very much still finding our feet, only been going a few months. Hopefully things will work out and we can get enough material together to get out there gigging soon as possible
Why do we go round this same subject time and time again?
Mostly for the post count...
-
So the majority of us took up bass because it was the only instrument left in our first bands? ... doesn't say much about our instruments appeal does it
-
Inspired by this I unashamedly had go with a pick last night... I wasn't very good

*Since posting this I am no longer involved in this project, I'd just like to wish them all the best I'm very proud of the tracks we've put out and have enjoyed working with some excellent musicians Couple of tracks from the first demo of my new project Baron Moa... Bandcamp link to the four tracks for free download https://baronmoa.bandcamp.com/releases DI straight from my Wal to the desk, no eq and some sort of compressor they've added in the mix. We've also hashed together some basic videos to get the tracks up on youtube. Some random Camden shots for this first one And singists disembodied head for the second... Hopefully gigging by the summer

I took it up because the death metal band I wanted to be in with some mates at school when I was 12 already had two guitarists and my parents wouldn't let me have a drum kit. At the time I hated it and regarded it as a poor relation to guitar (to be honest in the music we were playing at the time it was). As I got better I grew into it, started to write my basslines as a bassist rather than just doubling riffs an octave lower. I play a bit of guitar these days but in truth I'm pretty rubbish at it. Bass has become my instrument. I know more about playing bass that anything else in my life and can't ever see myself playing anything else seriously

cause I wasn't good enough to play guitar....
Any note however bad, on any instrument, is never more than one semi-tone away from a good note.
Unless you've knocked your tuner off 440 hertz

I must admit out of all the recent threads with BCers singing the praises of various guys I've never heard of, this is the only one where I've listened to it and though wow... this guy is something special. He poped up in a thread I saw the other day demoing the new mesa class D gear... even in isolation his playing is engaging and just damn listenable.
-
Definitely no lack of omph from my glock / berg setup... deep, smooth, clear bass from a Class D amp and Neo cab
That's a long wait. I'd probably implode whilst waiting for it!
I've been through it once before so I'm kinda of seasoned to it now... Unfortuately there is a waiting list and that's how long it takes to get one, so if you want one thats the deal...
-
I'm starting to wish I'd bought an off the peg one now. The wait is killing me and i still have atleast 8 weeks to go
8 Weeks! ... paah I still have 23 months to wait for my new Wal...

Mark King Fans. They're a sensitive bunch.
CamdenRob replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
It's not just Mark King fans or even just BCers, it's just people in general... The vast majority are way too sensitive about everyone agreeing with them... almost like they need others to confirm their views to verify them somehow. Listen to what you want, like whoever you like and play whatever gear you think sounds best... sod everyone else. -
Guitarist obsessed with scooped tone is driving me crazy
CamdenRob replied to Naetharu's topic in General Discussion
if he is that bad as a player and doesn't know how to use his gear properly.... why is he even in the band i'd have been shot of him by now personally. harsh but it's ruining your enjoyment of the band.
I read that as "I'd have shot him by now".... harsh but fair -
Thanks chaps... Lots to investigate.

Guitarist obsessed with scooped tone is driving me crazy
Anyone, bassist included, who talks about 'my tone' in that way ... bye bye

+1. Selfish.
I dunno I beg to differ... I have a preferred sound for my bass, which I adjust slightly depending on the other instruments I'm playing with. I have, on occassion been asked to change from a tone I think works to one a guitarist wants me to have so he cuts through on top of everything making the band sound worse as a whole. I'd prefer to stand my ground than relent and end up with the band sounding crap. I also take this approach with the bass lines I write... I will listen to suggestions but at the end of the day it's my choice what I play. If others don't like it then we can go our seperate ways and they can just find someone who does what they want -
That repair quote is ridiculous... but that aside I don't really have an issue with Warwicks pricing. I had a Thumb NT sixer for a bit and it was an exceptional bass and more importantly it had a unique tone which I could not replicate with any other bass. I believe the majority of Warwicks have this signature snarl and if that is the tone you want then nothing else will do. They are making something unique, well built and with a bit of history behind it. You pays your money etc etc...

I wouldn't slacken the strings personally... they act against the truss rod and without that load you may get issues with the neck bending, especially is the temperature / humidity is a bit erratic up in the loft. On the plus side if you have any siblings with children they can sell your basses on ebay in years to come as the famed "found in an uncles loft" instruments.
Based on a recommendation on BC, I got a pair of Superlux HD688B headphones. Superb quality & they come with interchangeable cables (1m & 3m included). The Mrs says she can hear them as they're not a fully closed back enclosure. It was a choice between these & the Edifier H-850 (which are based on the PJB H850).
I'll have to have a look around locally I think... I've realised that I'm not at home to take deliveries between now and christmas so it'll have to be something I can get from a shop in London somewhere
Mar-oo-chich. I wondered this too.
Thanks for that I would have taken a guess at Mar-oo-Sk (as in the first part of Sky)
Thanks!
I saw a pic of your Elwood somewhere earlier, is it in this thread? at least I think it was yours... can't seem to find it :s the red one? looked lovely

More importantly how the hell do you pronounce Maruszczyk?
