1.
I personally think understanding a little history about iconic musicians and bands is a good thing. My opinions may be harsh and inappropriate at times but they are based on my historical knowledge not merely talking out of my arse.
Oh get over yourself... ... Your opinion is no more valid than someone who has never picked up a bass guitar. It's music, there isn't a league table of who is better than who. Different music appeals to different people...
2.
Buy a Mike Lull P bass and take care of it.
I'll have to second this... Lull basses are wonderful.
3.
I`d rather put my bass in a Mono gig-bag and pay for an extra seat for it than pay to put it in the hold in a flightcase.
That's an even better idea...
4.
Monos are great on planes. Most airlines should allow you to have them as hand luggage.
It's the Most and should which means my basses will always be going in the hold in a full flightcase... I wouldn't want it going under in a gigbag... even a mono
5. When you say he's playing a lot of chords are they open chords using all the strings or just power chords (1st and 5th)? I have a seven string and playing open chords is harder because your muting the B all the time, but power chords are just the same obviously, doesn't matter how many strings you have. as others have mentioned I would go for a fixed bridge, less to go wrong... In fact I had all of the knobs taken off my guitar so all I have now is a pickup selector and on/off switch. Nice and simple
6.
Jeeeez, you had a GF in the early 90's ? You gotta be like a coiled spring these days
I have been fortunate enough to end up with a couple since then...it's just not as easy these days. Back in the 90s I had my youthful vigor, flowing locks and an optimism born of not yet having lived in the real world... Those were the days before 15 years of working in commercial construction turned my soul into the morally disengaged, unempathic, festering pit of misanthropy it is today...
7.
... a structurally perfect, exquisitely detailed empty vessel.
I had a girlfriend like that briefly in the 90s...
8. I think my subscription might have run out Mrs C bought it for me last year...
9. Not on the Radio, but I once had an album on CD by LoFi Allstars and track 7 (i remember the track number but not the name) had a completely different synth section in the middle to every other version I've heard (Itunes version, everyone elses CD). My CD was identical in every way to all the others I've seen (not a special edition etc) but for some reason had a different version of that track on it... bizarre.
10.
Simply stating that the reason that playerX is thought to be great is "obvious", or " because they are great/sublime/game-changing" doesn't help those who do not find it obvious, or otherwise further the debate in any meaningful fashion, often rather leading to an impression of "emperors new clothes"
Have you read blue's beatles thread?...
11. I had a couple of polytune minis break on me... the footswitch died... Not that that's an objective view of their reliability obviously, but it is what happened to me.
12.
Maybe, I should buy an interim bass... and sell it when the Sei is complete..??
This is what I did a couple of weeks back whilst waiting for my Wal fretless sixer to be built... was a bad idea. The Roscoe I bought is a great bass, but it's not a Wal and doesn't sound or play like one... and therefore I just end up feeling disapointed with it when I pick it up.
13. Just for ballance I do like a bit of parpy fretless... I'm often inclined to do some myself I'll have to have a better listen tonight, there were just to many notes in the bits I heard yesterday, not enough structure for my taste... I couldn't really pick out a melody or groove. Guess I'm just conditioned to cycles of riffs etc... I am a man of simple tastes
14. Can't go wrong with a TU2/3
15.
It kinda depends what you're into - there's lots of Rushes. Moving Pictures or Permanent Waves would be a good start. But... if you like stuff a bit poppier / glossier, maybe Power Windows. Or if you like it heavier, go back to 2112. Proggier? A Farewell to Kings or Hemispheres. 80s new-wave? Signals. I can't recommend anything post-Counterparts, 'cos I don't really rate it. Plenty of people do, though.
Thanks for that I'm just after a cross section really, Rush seem like something as a bass player I should be aware of
16. Following on from the Jaco thread... Rush are another band I have never heard. Any suggestions? I could do with something to listen to on the way home tonight...
17. I had a quick listen through some of the examples in this thread last night for the first time. He sounds very tallented but I couldn't really hear any notes... just lots of parpy fretless sliding about. Was pretty unique though and I'd not even know where to start coming up with lines like that presented with similar root material to work with.
18. The best ones are from whichever era the one your selling is from...
19. I still haven't got round to listening to anything he did
20. A myriad of options under £200... perfectly feisable to get a decent quality bass for less than that Have you had a look at the thomann website? I'd sugest having a look through there for something that takes your fancy, some of the no-name ebay brands can be a bit of a gamble. Of course you could get even more for your money if you were prepared to go for something used.
21.
Fixed.
ha... you're not wrong.
22. To be honest there are just as many generes of music which don't require a bass. A lot of the downtuned metal stuff doesn't really have any need for bass guitar IMO as most of that frequency range is already covered by the guitars.
23.
Yes... but when I want it..I want it sooner..
yeah i know that feeling...
24. To be honest, you know what you want and there is only one man who can do it When it arrives the years buildtime will be instantly forgotten and you'll have what you want, rather than a compromise.
