1. One of these...
2. I play a sixer, pretty much always have done. I need the low b for most of the tunes in our set, but I only use the high C twice in the set as part of a chord. I do a lot of solo loopy stuff when I'm between bands and I use the full range all the time in that. I do use a four string fretless though... I like to keep things simple there.
3.
You should film that!! The first time I heard Jaco 2015!!! It would be fascinating to see your reaction this late in the day.
I'm definitely going to put some time aside to go through everyone mentiond here. I won't be filming it though... I have what is referred to as a "face for radio"
4. Bloody foreigners comming on here, paying the marketplace subscription and selling us nice basses...
5. No issues in either of my bands Whenever I join a new project there is always the initial period where the other members find out that I will not be told what to play. I am the bass player and I will write my own basslines, they can either accept that or get someone else... The bands that I end up staying in always work harmoniously as everyone knows where they stand I wouldn't bother playing in any project that didn't suit me musically or contained anyone with half the attitude some on BC describe their bandmates as having... Then again I am not playing bass for my living... If I was I'd put up and shut up and get on with whatever gave me the most money regardless of the other guys in the band.
6. This is up there with never having watched Star Wars, but I have never heard anything Jaco has played on... Not out of any dislike for the man, just general disinterest has led to me not bothering to look him up on youtube etc. .. he's not alone, I've never heard anything by Geddy Lee either, which is a another name that keeps cropping up. One day I'll have to have a session going through all these names that get mentioned on BC
7. As above really... Only mod it if you're not concerned about resale value
8.
I'll freely admit I've made a lot more money flogging old guitars and basses than I ever have playing the damn things! In my defence, I've always put a lot of work in to make them look & play as good as possible, and all my Ebay sales were 99p/no reserve. Which means I've lost money a few times too. I'm sure I'm still going to hell, though. J.
You mean it is actually possible to MAKE money selling instruments? I'm definitely going about this the wrong way... I've never sold a single piece of kit for more than I bought it for
9. If you'd have ordered that ACG when you started thinking about all this it would be nearly ready by now...
10.
What about this little baby! https://www.musicsto...Rej0000H86IxEzK http://www.glockenkl...oducts_bass.htm
If I had to have a combo that would be it...
11.
Cheers Camden, but are there any visual clues to which model they are that you are aware of....
Yes sorry about that I should have read your post properly! I'm not aware of the differences personally but there are lots of spector experts here and I'm sure one will be along shortly
12. As far as I am aware the legend series are korean (or possibly indonesian?) made budget instruments, where as the Euro series is manufactured in the Czech Republic and are of a quality comparable to the USA models only cheaper. sorry just noticed you said visual differences... can't help you there I'm not familiar with the exact models
13.
I'll going to re-string the bass sometime over the next few weeks anyhow as the ones that come with it are a bit too bright for my tastes. I'll have a look at see what I can find with hex cores and see if that improves things.
Those Harley Benton Progressive basses are excelllent (I breifly had a four string version) but the stock strings are appalling... horrible cheap nasty things. Any decent set of strings will vastly improve the entire bass not just the B string
14.
...not willing to buy something unless it's an absolute steal???
Thats pretty much it... unless you're selling a bass that a buyer specifically wants and has searched for / been waiting for. A bargain will attract a much larger pool of buyers obviously who might not otherwise have had any interest in the specific bass. I always sell stuff at bargin prices to shift it on quick
15. As with all of these "best gear" threads this will inevitably turn into a list of people suggesting their own rig.. So I shall be the first... Not a combo but my Glockenklang Blue Soul head and Bergantino CN210 gives me clean clear power loud enough to fill a room over a rock drummer and packs up small enough to strap to a trolly and take on the bus. With my current amplification needs I wouldn't change it given an infinite budget. ... now if transporting it around was no object that would be another thing... Full fat Glock BAC and 6x10.
16. I play guitar in a hardcore band and drop picks all the time due to my agricultural technique and the fact we are usually jumping around a fair bit, I have spares stuck on the front of my guitar with a strip of yellow gaffa tape for easy access. Never played bass with a pick and I will not be sticking any gaffa tape on the front of my Wals...
17. What's the string spacing on this out of interest? Looks like a lovely bass at a great price
18. I gave up on the idea of a dual bass case in the end as they were just too heavy to be of practical use.
Not sure how the other mono cases are for storage?
I have the m80 and the protection is great but it is quite bulky and has the same single pocket as the m80 dual bag. I also have a vertigo for guitar and again its a really well padded bag offering excellent protection but it has a design flaw... For a bag invented so that you can use it vertically for some bizarre reason the front pocket opens on the side, so you have to the turn the bag sideways anyway to access it properly... It's ridiculous, why is it not just top access which is the entire point of the design?
19.
I'm looking to lay down a bass line and muck about the solo's over the top.
Never heard of the EH 360 but the RC1 will do that just fine
20. Cor some real peaches gone up on the marketplace today...
21. That looks the business...
22. On another Wal related note I've managed to get hold of a set of the schaller MS4 light replacement tuners for my MK1. I didn't have the right tools to change them over myself so I dropped it off with Martin at the Gallery yesterday for the changeover... Picking it up Monday and the new tuners look almost identical and will shave half a pound off the weight
23.
I had one for a while Rob, in the late 90s.. Cost me £700 at the time and was IIRC, JG1123 or JG1124. It came in a full flight case and had the original XLR lead and advertising leaflet with it... When I stopped playing, which I did for over 10 years, I sold it to Leigh Gorman, BoWowWow's bass player who's a friend of mine. It was passive and had the 2 little switches for the pick ups embedded in the leather scratchplate, which was quite cool.. Beautiful as it was, to my ears, it never sounded as good as the Pro IIe's that I've had over the years, which is why I sold it to Leigh. If he hadn't been back in the country for a short while from California, where he still lives, I wouldn't have sold it. Last time I saw it was when Leigh was over here in 2010 for the Matthew Ashman (ex- Adam & The Ants and BowWowWow guitarist who died in 1995) tribute gig at The Scala in Kings Cross. Leigh's such a gifted player with a unique style, that it sounded great at that gig! Given it's rarity value, I occasionally console myself with the thought that it's with the right person; better touring the States on a regular basis than having to knock out a series of dull indie covers down at The New Inn in Littlehampton in my less than capable hands!
Thats a great little story.. I bet most of the 46 (48?) have similar back stories now, well the ones that have survived.. I know little of Leigh but when his name came up in another thread a little while back I looked up a few bowwowwow videos on youtube and I've got to admit I thought they were great tunes and what a bass tone... I'd be a happy man if I sounded half as good as that! Are the switches below each pick up low pass filters or series parallel? I would love one but they do seem sadly unobtainable... I am on the lookout for a fretted four and a proIIe is top of the wish list.
24. It's great when you play with a good drummer though isn't it... someone it seems effortless to lock in with, someone who actually listens to what you're playing and adjusts their parts to sync up and you change bits of your basslines to suit their beats. Creating that foundation together... I've only had the pleasure of playing with a couple of drummers like this, one years ago when I was 19 and the one in my new band... I look forward to every rehearsal
25.
Jack Bruce & Ginger Baker
These are the only two I've heard of in this thread so far... must get out more
