Ever had a cheapo bass that you just keep going back to?
CamdenRob replied to yondergo's topic in Bass Guitars
Sell the Fender and play the SX... it obviously works for you, so you might as well sell the bass you don't really like and use the money for something you do like It's simple really... play what you like and as BRX says cost is irrelevent. If I was you I'd be happy that I've found what I want from an inexpensive bass. -
Congratulations... nothing like having the exact bass you want made for you How long do you have to wait? ... thats the painful bit.

Great review as always... I had some behringer rack gear for a home studio in the 90s and it was great... Cost a fraction of stuff from other brands and did the job just fine. It's reasuring to know, if everything went tits up for me financially I would still be able to gig with perfectly usable gear

Thomann selling Harley Benton basses as 'Decoration only'

it's a deko frenzy....! Good luck all -
Is a Glockengang Blue Sky twice as good (or is it evan as good as) an Ashdown Rootmaster 800?
Those two amps are polar opposites... One is going for the SVT type tone and the other is one of the cleanest HiFi amps available, it's not really a reasonable comparison.

I have no filter... some of my stuff is shockingly crap
He seems to be immune to external influences, which I like - he just does what his thing. However, it means he has no taste filter, so sometimes it's extremely good and sometimes it's laughable. I mean.. he signed this artwork off for a start. But he co-wrote 'Blood On the Rooftops', so his place in my own personal heaven is guaranteed.
I know absolutely nothing about the man but that is a hilarious piece of cover art....
Will be interesting to see if the early Sandbergs, Lakland's etc are commanding the sort of money as collectors items that early Fenders do now when they are 40+ year old instruments.
I don't know if modern basses following the fender shapes will become collectable... todays vintage Fenders will still be around and by then will be even older and pricier... despite which instruments are actually better.

I like fender basses... I spent most of my youth despising them as I was playing modern basses and could not see how the fender tone could work for the music I was doing at the time, I also thought the designs looked old fashioned. I've had a couple of Js and Ps in recent years and I've grown fond of the simplicity. I think my favourite was a Jap P bass I had from the mid eighties, it had such a lovely soft tone with flats and the tone rolled off. Although there is a huge choice of instruments available these days and I don't play fender basses myself, I still think they are the yardstick by which all others are judged by... still the industry standard after all these years.
Thanks mate ! Here, I'll decribe all of them ! From left to right:

Dolganoff Ignis 6 fretless (THE ultimate fretless, made by a friend of mine);
Leduc Master Piece MP624 (My big nasty active Jazz bass);
Warwick Rockbass Alien Deluxe (great sounding acoustic);
Modulus Quantum Turbo 6 (aka the ultimate stingray bass);
Modulus Quantum Hollowbody 6 (my ultimate modern bass).

Looks like you've got everything covered! I love the look of the Leduc, not seen one of those before and I've always been a fan of modulus basses. How do you find playing fretless on a sixer? I play a six string fretted bass (pretty much always have) but I tend to keep things simple on fretless and I just have a four string.

I'm down to two basses, one amp and one cab these days... ... oh and a cable and a strap.

Advice on where to start with looking for a six-string bass
CamdenRob replied to Naetharu's topic in Bass Guitars
Some of the newer ibanez sixers look like quality kit... They have a range in Wunjos and up close the look really tasty. I'd be a little concerned about the string spacing and neck profile, but the new ones with the nordy pickups look excellent value to me if your going to buy new. -
Advice on where to start with looking for a six-string bass

I had a Spector legend for a while... Very decent bass for the money, not sure if they still do them? Although as others have said Yamaha are always a good bet -
I'm roughly 50/50 these days between fretted and fretless.

I hardly ever listen to music... Only time I do listen to it is when I'm on the bus and that's just to block out people bellowing at each other about football. When I do I mostly listen to stuff from my youth, my iPod hasn't been updated for about fifteen years!

Bass Guitar Magazine - Column about Basschat
CamdenRob replied to Silvia Bluejay's topic in General Discussion
Congrats Rob! I sure hope the reviewer knew how to use the controls, it sure took me longer than an hour to get used to it.
It was Ellen O'Reilly they sent round to review it and it sounded like she had the hang of it after about five minutes... I think she liked it, to my ears it sounded unmistakably like a Wal. It sounded different to when I play it but that's because she is a far better player! I feel a bit nervous to be honest... I know its silly but I genuinely care about this bass and really believe in what Paul is doing down in that tiny workshop in Cobham. I feel like I put something of myself into it having specced it and made various choices along the build process. I also sold all my other gear and waited a year and a half for it, so it's been a part of my life for a couple of years already and will continue to be so for the rest of my playing days. Can't wait to see what they thought -
This is exactly the sort of crap I fall for...

Thomann selling Harley Benton basses as 'Decoration only'
CamdenRob replied to Annoying Twit's topic in Bass Guitars
Ok, so, I've been lucky enough to wake up early in the morning on a glorious British day and be the first to message Rob, who was generously getting rid of some of his HB dekos. After a quick beer in Camden, the Jazz had traded hands / switched gigbags. Honestly, I think I've had just about any jazz bass short of the real thing, and I have played enough "real things" to know what's to like and not to like. I don't think I can fault this one. The pups sound great, the fret job is very, very well done and the finish is, in all seriousness, just great. My other Harley Benton Jazz, which was not a deko, was also sunburst originally, and was 1) in more than three pieces; 2) exceedingly heavy. The only complaint I could have was that the second fret was a bit high and caused a slight rattle when pressing the first fret (with the neck straight as an arrow). That could easily be fixed adjusting the relief, but since the fret was quite clearly not pressed down properly, I decided to give ye olde hammer and cloth method a go, which fixed the problem immediately. One other minor problem with these basses is that the pick up screw holes are not really that deep, which might be a problem if you want very low action (and avoid a neck heel). I am pleased to report that this was quite the exception: by pressing a bit harder with the screwdriver I managed to set the pick ups exactly where I liked them. There you have it, extremely low action on a beautiful, great sounding, maple-spanky bass. I am recording some stuff now, so hopefully I'll post some samples soon. Again, CamdenRob, I owe you more than one!
You're more than welcome, glad you're getting some use out of it. Was really nice to meet you over a beer and chat about basses, we must hook up again sometime and make night of it. I had two JB-75s, the one you have and a natural one and they were both astonishing quality... not just for the price either, they were very nice basses indeed as you describe. -
I can totally understand that buddy and I'd do the same if in your position.
I do agree with you though... I love my lightweight rig but if I had a van / someone to carry it I would have a full fat Glock rig instead.

I got one of these for a friend of Mrs C's... It sounded great with the wilkinson pups. Ridiculous value.

Metal Newbie looking for a Head/Cab - advice needed please
CamdenRob replied to Naetharu's topic in Amps and Cabs
I played a lot of bass in metal bands in my younger days and to be honest I never thought dirt / distortion really worked on bass... The guitars are generally a wall of gain and the only way a bass can be audible is to be clean and punchy and not wooly and boomy. I'd go for a GK rig if I was still playing bass in metal bands. -
Another "Im not a fan of singlecuts but..." thread.

What are all those controls on the LP?... There more knobs and switches on there than a fodera. -
I don't have a choice... I travel to gigs, rehearsals,recordings etc on public transport so a 210 on a trolly and a class D is all I can manage. To be honest 19 gigs out of 20 I'm DId straight into the house PA anyway and my rig is just a monitor.
