cruise ship work. have you and would you do it again
CamdenRob replied to bassjim's topic in General Discussion
The thing that puts me off... (asides from the sort of music I'd have to play ) is that I very much doubt you'd get a private cabin and so you'd end up sharing your only personal space (and bathroom) with some lumbering neanderthall snoring and farting his way through the night... -
Very generous of you.
Well you know yourself they are perfectly playable basses and it seems a shame for me to have them sitting there in boxes... -

Would be nice if these could go to someone who needs a bass rather than someone who's going to put them on ebay! -
All Gone Now I've gone through a phase of buying "decoration only" Harley Benton basses from Thomann at ridiculously low prices... For those of you who are unaware these basses are sold as "unplayable - for decoration only" but in reality they are fine and have only minor cosmetic defects. These three have no visable defects at all asides the small D they have stamped on the back of the bass behind the heel and the back of the headstock to identify the bass as a deko. They all come in the cardboard shipping box if you want it. I have given a couple of these away to friends of friends but I have three left and in truth I have no need for them, or the space in our modestly sized London flat to hoard them. So if you want one let me know... pickup only from Camden NW1. I'm around evenings this week and weekends. These will be first come first served, so I'll have a review of any replies / PMs etc in the order I have received them to make sure it's as fair as possible. Please don't be offended if I don't get back to you right away. I will keep this thread updated where I can and I will reply to all PMs. [s]First up a Trans black progressive: Active circuit, nice punchy tone... probably could do with a decent set of strings but a nice modern sounding bass.[/s] Gone [s]Second up is a JB-75 Jazz: Lovely bass this. Wilkinson pickups, decent fit and finish and D'addario nickles... it's a looker.[/s] Gone [s]and finally... a PB-20: Does what it says on the tin... punchy P bass. the tone control is surprisingly versatile and goes from bright to deep and warm. I don't have any pics but it's one of these.[/s] Gone Also... If I try and buy any more of these remind me that whilst they are probably trhe best bargain buys around I don't actually need them

Also... I think the white pickguard looks great.
-
What a result! I hope you enjoy it

They must have got away with selling over priced tat much easier in the days before the internet....
-
wonder how much they must have paid for it

Thomann selling Harley Benton basses as 'Decoration only'
CamdenRob replied to Annoying Twit's topic in Bass Guitars
was getting prices for an American interested in PB-50 just now. They've just been listed. I got a voucher this morning and no self control. Keenly awaiting confirmation email
They look lovely... Hope you snag one -
Pro 1 pickups were a lot more "P" position that that bass. I think your description of the tone is a good one though.
Yes that looks much more central doesn't it... they seem to have been experimenting with the position of the single pickup over the years.
-
I have, as that bass was mine! It actually sounded really good, and ergonomically was very comfortable to play, but I can't for the life of me remember how the control knobs were configured, given it was a 1 pickup bass !!! I sold it to a guy in Italy. Never seen another like it. Cheers Gareth PS Trev, belated welcome to Basschat!
Yes it must have given a pretty unique tone based on where it sits... not quite as burpy but with more fundamental than a solo'd bridge pup I would imagine? Isn't that where the pick up was on the pro1 and pro1e?
-
wow what a result
-
That's part of what attracts me to it.
I'd be interested to hear it... it's not quite P bass position is it. Have you played one with the pickup in that position?
-
Rob, was planning to arrange one for this autmn but family stuff and being asked to chat about Wals at the SE Bass Bash in a couple of weeks kinda sidelined that. We should do one in the new year some time. There are a number of rehearsal studios we could hire near me which are very convenient for M25/M3/M4/London trains...
Yeah I'd be up for a Wal bash, if not near London, somewhere with a hotel nearby would be good I can't make the SE bash unfortunately... Your talk would have been a highlight for me.
-
I'd love the fretless on the chair in the back row.
The pickup looks to be in a bit of an odd place... I think if I was to have a single pickup Wal I'd want it in the proper bridge position like the later pro series second from right.
Just a little shot of my modest collection... HA! YEAH, I WISH!!!!! This was from a "Wal Fest" gathering in 2006 in Woking... some fine instruments in that collection. Spot the double necked midi bass and the Pro IIE on which Too Shy was recorded!
Some of the talkbass guys have collections to rival that! Any plans for another Wal fest?

Bass Guitar Magazine - Column about Basschat
The new issue should hit our doormats around 21st. I'm looking forward to reading about your bass - which one is it?
It's the Ziricote Wal... they sent someone round to review it a while ago and I got an email from Joel a couple of weeks back saying it would be in the next issue. I'd be interested to see what they make of it, filter preamps take a bit of getting used to and the reviewer only had an hour or so with it. -
LOOL!! My photo is back with my article - I'm smaller than before but there again! - and the gear-ogling factor in the rest of the mag is high, as usual.
I always read your column I'm looking forward to next months issue as there is a review of my bass in it... hope they didn't hate it -
Don't worry it will only take me 20 minutes to read before the next one comes...( and that will be Sylvia's Column-I'm a slow reader)!
I just look at the pictures....
