1. I agree with you 73jazz,there are some slight similarities, but the headstock shape, the block markers on the neck and the little control plate, and even the pickup shape, all point at something else.To be honest,I had never heard of Jolana before, but having checked them out,I think I would rule them out.The headstock is familiar to me for some reason.....
2. Here's a pic from the 60s.The bassist played with one of the old Irish Showbands, but nobody can identify his bass.Anybody shed any light?Looks sorta homebrew to me.
3. Sorry for the late reply guys, this ol' computer is giving me nightmares.Right,so the concensus is to use both the red and braid together. It'll make for a tight squeeze on the little circuit board, but your advice is good neepheid,I'll try that.Whats with the extra wire anyway?would it be something to do with coil tapping, right enough? Thanx Aberdeen!
4. Thanx for that.Nobody else interested?? OK,thanks.Guess I'll try Talkbass.
5. Hi all.I'm just about to install an Artec Se2A pre-amp in my Squier P5,As you all know, this bass has the same pup layout as the Jazz bass, and as I've already installed an SE2A in my VMJ,I figured,'no problem'.Now,when I took the scratchplate off the P5,I've discovered that the pups have 3 wires each. One red,one white and one braid.I can see that the red and braid are connected to the same points on both pots(ground) so I presume I can continue to use them together when I install the Se2A.It only has provision for normal 2-wire pups so heres what I need to know...As the red and braid obviously serve the same purpose can I disregard the red and just use the braid(as ground) or must I use both red and braid together? Also, can somebody explain why these pups have 3 wires instead of the usual 2?Thanks.
6. Still think there's a twist in the string!
7. When you are installing new strings,do you wrap them round the posts a few turns before tuning up?This can cause that weird 'phasing' effect you're talking about.I used to do that a lot until I discovered thats what was causing the problem.Try removing the offending strings and then re-install them, without first wrapping them round the post.Take up the slack by using the machine head.Worked for me.
8. Bass player or bassman are fine with me.Bassist seems a bit hoity-toity.'Plays the bass' or 'bass guitarist' I hate. But you can call me anything, just don't call me too early in the morning!!
9. Does anyone know the effect thats used at the very end of the Beatles 'Birthday'.I've heard it before somewhere, and can't think where.
10.
Drifting slightly off-topic, Revolution in the Head is easily in my top three books on popular music, quite possibly the best of the lot. A truly superb piece of work.
+1 on that. When my last copy got too ragged to read I went straight to Amazon and got another one.A veritable bible of Beatles music!
11. Ever tried to play bass to 'Abracadabra' by The Steve Miller Band and sing it at the same time.Bloody 'ard! Just realised - Thats the complete opposite of what this thread's about .SOZ
12. That's what I'm talking about!Well done that man!I'll check it tomorrow as I've got an ongoing discussion with Thornybank right here on BC re the same thing.Thanx Paul.
13. Thanx Johnston.I contacted JLK and they couldn't help, but he did recommend TouchstoneTonewoods like Icastle suggested. However,I may have a possible success within the forum,so I wait and see what happens.
14. Like I said,I just want something that I can wheek the frets out of.Setup and all the rest of that stuff doesn't bother me too much, and anyway, that can all be taken care of after the defret. The headstock pic in Daz's post doesn't look like the one in the Argos ad either but I can't check it out myself,as our wee Argos store doesn't have it in stock.
15. 1.Paul McCartney. For inventive and melodic basslines,he's the man. 2.Jimmy Johnston.Especially for his work with James Taylor.Understated, unobtrusive but perfect. 3.Andy Fraser.Again, inventive and ingenious lines with Free (Witness Mr Big,The Stealer,All Right Now)
16.
Johnny Brook? Second hand Aria STB Jazz? Both would be a fraction of the price of the Starcaster. I'm not sure I could imagine buying an argos bass when I can get a VMJ for £225 or thereabouts.
Thing is,I've already got a VMJ which I ain't gonna touch,But the basses got a couple reasonable reviews on Amazon.com.1 guy even considered it much better than an Affinity.I just want something to mess about with.
17. I googled it and read a couple of favourable reviews on the Amazon website.I was actually looking for a cheap Jazz to defret as a pastime over the cold winter months.Hmmmm.......
18. Just wondered if any body has seen one of these in the flesh?Looks OK.I personally have never heard of such a thing until today. http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/s...rms=FENDER+BASS
19.
Bring back The Whistle Test!!!!
+1000! That was live music at it's best, warts and all.By the way,I think EC's opening track was a version of the old Canned Heat song 'On the road again'.I agree with all here,it sounded completely discordant and not up to his usual standard.I can't help but wonder if he realised it sounded that bad. I take that back.It wasn't that bad on 2nd listening. In fact it must have been pretty difficult to sing that song and play it at the same time. No,I actually thought it was quite good, and no,it wasn't the Canned Heat song I thought it was.Just some of the lyrics sounded similar
20. Hi guys.Does anybody know of a distributor of these units APART from Thomann? They don't seem to have a good reputation when it comes to shipping goods outside of Germany. I got one of these a couple of years ago for my Squier VMJ and so far I've had no complaints.I got it from a US company called Guitar Fuel.I've tried emailing them but so far no reply.I want another one for my Squier Precision 5,which as you probably know, has the same pickup configuration as the Jazz bass. Anybody know of another supplier? Thanks.
21. You know I've often wondered to myself, when Sirmacca goes on tour, and brings all the associated gear and amps and all, does he ever sigh and say to himself "with all the beautiful bass gear available nowadays, all the amazing basses in the world,I have to use this cheap piece of c**p,because it's expected of me.I darn't go out there with a Sadowsky,or Fodera or hell, even a Fender.I hate the sound of this thing. Its flimsy and looks like an antique" Or does he say,"Yay, my good old Hofner.Man I love this bass"? On a different note,I thought I spied a big ole Vox amp in the backline, very like the one he used in his heyday.Wonder if he's still using that?
22. Keeponehandloose, the output from the second speaker would be fed into the recording console, instead of miking or DI'ing the bass amp.Speakers work like microphones, only in reverse,so a speaker placed in front of another speaker would act like a mike.I would have thought that the bigger the 2nd speaker, the bigger would be the frequency range, hence the punchier sound on 'Paperback Writer' and others.
23. Roger on that Rumple.Looking forward to seeing the finished bass. Those pups are the Canine's Cahoonas!!
24. Maybe it's the angle, but that bridge does not seem central to the pickups. It's as if the bass side of the bridge is level with the bass side of the pickups, but on the treble side the pickups seem to extend further than the bridge.Could be just camera angle though.
25. That logo looks like the type that are available on Ebay, where you get the entire logo on one piece of paper.Normally you would separate the OCB bit and position it properly, but some just put the whole thing on in one piece.I know,I've used them in the past! PS Hi Frank.Hows the little Precision you bought off me a while ago in Downpatrick? Gerry
