I watched 'The Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain' on the Cambridge folk festival that was shown on Sky Arts last night. There was a Bass Uke involved in that and it sounded fine.Hell,he even did a bass solo on it.They did some weird stuff, namely an Acapella version of 'Pinball Wizard' and a rockin version of 'Oops I did it again'

Right.And for this you paid............??
Steve Miller band was poor. Even when they played his old hit Abracadabra it sounded like a cover version. Plus who was playing the bass? Noone visible so either the bassist was off stage or they were playing to a recording ( which thought wasn't allowed)
I've just had a quick listen to the first couple tracks on his new album 'Bingo!' I do believe I'm hearing synth bass! So on 'Abracadabra' I guess it may have been the keyboard player on bass(literally)

Er,I must learn to read the details first

Anybody like this idea?I was tired of my VMJ's shiny black scratchplate getting er.. scratched, and looking grubby.I didn't like the look of it in that condition as it detracted from the good look of the bass.So I scratched it! With a green scouring pad! All over! It now has a matt finish which I think contrasts with the shiny body lacquer admirably. I like it anyway. What say you?

Just watched the James Taylor thing again.Maybe it's just me,but did anyone else get the impression that she was more into him than he was her.I got the distinct air of aloofness on Taylors part. She looked at him like a lovesick teenager all night, but he hardly glanced at her at all,and when he did, there was precious little love or admiration there.Even on the very last number, when he finished playing,he got up and went to put his guitar on it's stand and barely glanced at her.I wonder why.......?

Bassists who don't play on their bands records?
Frankie goes to hollywood I dont think John Taylor played the solo on some like it
Wasn't Norman Watt-Roy involved with their first 2 singles?I think he played on 'Relax' and 'Two Tribes' -
Jay Kay is Jamuroquai. He's the one who signed the contract. The band came later.
Not sure what you mean by that, but in WIKI,Jamiroquai is defined as a band, with Jay Kay as the lead vocalist.Sure,he may have formed the band, and made the name up from the word 'Jam' and the Iroqois Indians, but I think it's just a common fallacy that exists that HE is Jamiroquai.I just feel that it detracts from the band as a whole, and sort of turns them into his backing group.Don't get me wrong.I've nothing against the guy,it's just something that bothers me.

Don't start me.Don't feckin start me!!!!

Please tell me if I'm wrong. The band is Jamiroquai, the singer is Jay Kay.Right??Why do presenters refer to HIM as Jamiroquai..Jools Holland did it last night...."And now,the man who opened the show,Jamiroquai!!! They are being portrayed as HIS backing band,as in HE'S Jamiroquai, they're just a bunch of musos got together for the show. Youda thought HE would have said something.I mean it's not the first time I've heard this. I may be wrong, but I don't think I am. Rant over!!!

I thought I caught a glimpse of a 'Fender' logo but I may have been mistaken.Taylor's some kid though,I've been listening and watching him for many years now.Read a couple books about him too.He had an 'eventful' life, let's say,a lot of which was not good,on a personal level, for him. But,hey,he's fine now! I love his music and the sound he achieves on record, and live too,is mainly due to the balance of his guitar sound, the bass player's sound, mainly Jimmy Johnson now,and his voice. It must be good to have a bass that you can read when you're bored
-
Anyone watching this? Some nice tracks from them both.Lee Sklar is on bass and he's using what looks like a battered old Precision, covered with graffiti and sporting 2 Precision type pickups. He's sounding great as per usual. He played some great bass on Taylor's albums early on,especially 'You've got a Friend' and 'Carolina in my Mind' to name but two. The BBC is doing us musos proud tonight.
I suspect that it's not just the capo itself but also could be the technique used to put the capo on.
Hmmm, another good point.I know that a few times I've put my capo on my own acoustic and have noticed that the strings are slightly displaced to one side, which would have a negative effect. That's mainly to my own ineptitude of course, but the 2 guitarists I referred to have been playing for years and know their instruments inside out,so intonation problems and set-ups aren't really an issue,as both the guys get their guitars serviced regularly by Ernie Macmillan,a widely respected guitar tech here in N.Ireland, who used to work with the Lowden Guitar Co.,also based here.So I guess it's capo technique that's to blame, rather than any instrument faults? I'll have a word......Thanx for the input.
Capos are the devil's spawn for this sort of thing. The pressure they exert on the strings seems to be higher than the typical fretting pressure applied by a finger, which bends the string sharp. Result? You've got to play sharp to match. That would make sense.Although his guitar is a high end Lowden, and it stays in tune WITH ITSELF with the capo on, I can see where the extra pressure would raise the normal pitch ever so slightly, but enough for me to notice. The capo he uses is the normal run-of-the-mill Shubb brass doobie. I guess then, that relieving the tension on the capo would help, although not so much as to cause buzzing.Either that or a better capo

I've noticed a strange thing that happens quite a lot when I play in a folk duo/trio.I normally play in a 4 piece rock and blues type band, but sometimes my services are required for a folk duo that occasionally require some bass back-up.The problem is this: When the guitar player uses a capo in the course of the gig,I notice that my bass is no longer totally in tune with him.Without the capo,we're fine, but as soon as he puts a capo on the 2nd or 3rd fret,I'm no longer exactly in tune.I find myself having to bend notes to stay in tune. Now the guitarist is using a Lowden electro-acoustic,so I doubt very much if there's problems with his intonation, and mine is spot on,so why is there this discrepancy?I also noticed it on another occasion when the guitarist was using an Ovation.Anybody have any ideas? Is my bass at fault, although I have used other basses in the past, and still experienced the same thing.Basses are Squiers.VMJ and Precision 5.

Mine neither.(Indonesia)And neither does it have that routing under the pickguard.I can use mine with the PG off just fine. All there is is a slightly larger than usual/necessary cutout for the neck pickup.
More importantly whatwas the bassist for The Jolly Boys playing. A kind of huge thumb piano?
Yeah I watched the programme this morning with my 'sounds' on and although it wasn't really tuneful.he was getting some real deep bass from that thing.it seemed to be metal 'prongs' which he twanged with his fingers. They (the prongs) were attached to a large resonator.Probably some W.Indian invention. Not a lot of available notes though,by the look of it. PS,listening to Grinderman as I type this.I honestly do not get this.At all!

Did nobody notice that Jools kept calling Herb Alpert Herb ALBERT? Several times.Youda thought he could get that right!
