Led Zeppelin - never understood the expression, going down like a lead balloon to mean going down badly. I'd have thought it would go down brilliantly, and getting it up would be the hard part (titter ye not)!
I think a lead balloon going down badly refers to it deflating rather than physically dropping in height

Yes I enjoyed that too. The FFS keyboard player was a happy chap!

I wonder if he was playing near the bridge? I'll get my coat

One band I have never seen anybody do a tribute to but think would be great is adam and the ants. Having two drummers and all dressed up in the feathers etc i think would make a good show. Ive seen a couple of web sites but never seen any band playing around the midlands as one. May be my next venture if the current band falls apart

We are a Mod revival tribute so not specifically one band but our set is made up of a large amount of Jam songs

Just bought a Vintage jazz bass from Richard. Very happy with the bass as it was in perfect condition and Richard was a great guy to deal with.

Little green bag. Especially as I sing it too. Goes down really well with a wide range of ages

I have one. Love the sound i get and so much headroom. I dont find it that heavy and i have back problems

Do you mean bad vocals or bad frontman? IMO some of the greatest bands have singers who arent always the best melodically. Ozzy, Brian Johnson, Lemmy, Johnny Rotten to name but a few

Different neck sizes on same basses (JHS Tony Butler to be exact)
bonzodog replied to bonzodog's topic in Bass Guitars
Yes I suppose it must be down to them cutting costs with thinner necks, but its actually the thinner neck I prefer. The annoying thing is I only bought my TB Sig a few months ago so assume the shop maybe had some old stock. Taught me a lesson to try the actual bass I am buying before I buy it though -
Not sure if anyone else has come across this but is it feasible to have different neck sizes to differ on what should be the same bass. I bought a second hand jhs vintage V4 precision bass and liked it because the neck felt thinner than precisions I had tried in the past. I am also on a budget so this suited me. I was also happy with build quality and pickups for the price. As I have always been a fan of black/black and maple, I decided to then buy the JHS Tony Butler V4 sig model of the same bass when I had a bit more cash. I didnt bother to try one out as it is hard to find any shops that stock JHS basses and plus I assumed it was the same as my standard V4 in dimensions. When it arrived the neck was noticeably wider and thicker from fingerboard to back which I was surprised at, although I assumed it may have been due to the fact the Sig is maple and the standard was rosewood. I have been playing it now for a few months and am happy with it, but still find my other V4 nicer to play because of the thinner neck. Anyway, yesterday I called into a music shop whilst passing through Shrewsbury and saw a tony butler sig model hanging up. I was very surprised to see the neck was nice and thin like my standard V4, not wider like my own Tony Butler. We are not talking a huge amount but the thin one is 41mm nut width and 14mm front to back and my Tony Butler Sig is 44mm nut width and 19mm front to back. But it feels very noticeable when playing. I have emailed JHS, but have not had much success when I emailed them before about other things so not expecting any help. I just wondered if anyone else had come across this. Think it may be time to try and stop waving the flag for JHS Vintage and move across to Squiers.

May possibly be that the amp is not driving the speakers too hard, as the speakers could handle more than that amp is throwing at it. I used to have the same set up but with the HA3000. Also depends on what you are doing with your EQ too. As long as your happy with the sound then that's all that matters. Having the two should give you a little more perceived volume but if the 410 is giving you all you need then that's a bonus.

Fretless - The Police. Simply fantastic bass lines
Much to my disappointment, "So Lonely" has recently been dropped from our set. A damned weird decision given that it always seemed to be well received
We rehearsed this song many times and I loved playing it. Guitarist and Drummer decided against playing it so I was out voted. Shame as its a great song! -
First full dress rehearsal with new band- PA disaster

I think its the cabs. Ive tried skytech cabs and they were very poor IMO and nowhere near the output they claimed to be. Watts means nothing anyway in active cabs. Can you hire some better quality ones for your first gig maybe? -
I find My chemical romances 'Cancer' a hard song to listen to because of the subject matter but also a beautiful song too

Slightly off topic but this reminds me of the time radio 4 played the first ever recording of the human voice. The presenter then gets the giggles. Makes me laugh every time I hear it https://youtu.be/SJdlF-DCUKs
I think you also have to consider the venue and size of the crowd. Fronting to 60 people in a small bar might be different than 2,000 at an outdoor festival. Blue
Yes you are right. Strangely though I find the smaller crowds harder. To try and have banter with a handful of people stood at a bar is very hard where as asking 300+ people to sing a long is easy!
-
I think it depends on the type of band you are in. I share vocals with guitarist but its me that talks to the crowd. I can happily have banter with the crowd and get them clapping and singing along as we are a covers band. In an originals band this would come across as cheesy so sometimes quiet and moody work better.

Technical issues and can't play the gig... ever happened to you?
bonzodog replied to CamdenRob's topic in General Discussion
That would terrify me. As i am also the PA man for our band as well as bass and singer, i have spares for eveything. Even a spare speaker stand. A few gigs ago our drummer forgot his spare snare and I was panicing all night -
Cool..thanks guys. Think I will continue to use both and adjust the eq for now. It seems to be certain rhythms i cant do with my fingers rather than speed. Struggle with town called malice riff but can do the bass solo to my generation with my fingers fairly easily.
-
I know this has been done to death and will cause a lot of conflicting views so I apologise in advance. I have always played with a pick but more recently have begun learning with my fingers. I not only enjoy playing more with my fingers but prefer the more punchy sound I am getting. However there are some songs we do that I simply just cannot do with my fingers. We play in a mod covers band and some of the typical runs that are in the jam bass lines are just too fast without my pick. Town called malice too is proving impossible to get the rhythm with my fingers where as its simple with a pick. The problem is if I switch between the two its making my sound too different as I used to roll up the low freq with a pick but back off now with my fingers. Should I carry on trying with my fingers till I nail it or just accept I need to switch between the two and keep adjusting the eq?

Supporting local gigs and venues - is it an obligation?
bonzodog replied to Marvin's topic in General Discussion
I think the venue should be doing most of the hard work to get punters in but also think the band should also be seen to be advertising too especially now with social media. We play almost every weekend and always put our gigs on our facebook page but would not expect all our followers to come to every gig. We play at lots of venues where we find out on arrival the venue hasnt bothered to put any posters up. But on the other hand if I was a landlord I would also be annoyed if I booked a band who had a website or a facebook page but didnt bother to mention the gig at my venue.
