  1. I've only briefly tried the Harley Benton/Palatino and the Aria SWB Lite stick bass and they both to spun/rotated. The Far West looks like a quality instrument, though I don't think the bridge is adjustable so I thought twice about that one, as I didn't know how it was set up. The Eminence or Yamaha SLB-200 are both stable, so I hear, difficult to try out though as I'm sure you know.
  2. These look like a great idea for something slightly more portable that a normal width bass, which gets pretty hefty by the time you add a padded case. GLWTS.
  3. I've been doing this chromatic exercise on my upright bass & also on my fretless, and I'm finding it good for intonation.
  4. What is about this talented, successful & professional musician that people don't like? 😉
  5. If you're down London way the Bass Gallery have a red head on their website.
  6. Yes agreed mate. Remember hearing this years ago on the BBC radio 2 anniversary tribute to John Lennon, brought tears to my eyes...
  7. Have you tried to dial in a more electric tone with a preamp or pedal ? I use a KK Pure Preamp (mid, and treble controls plus an internal gain trimmer) to dial in a more acoustic tone if I play somewhere with a tinny PA, so something like basic EQ controls would enable you to get the tone you want.
  8. Ed Friedland's done a nice review on YT, and he had four so must be pretty good...
  9. I guess he's been a professional musician since the 1960s and at the very top end of the business so he must be doing something right, and even if you're just talking about his bass playing, I've have him in my band any day 😉.
  10. Couple of nice 32 " scale Maruszczyks in Bass Direct. I think there was even a Jake 4p for sale on this forum too.
  11. They look great, but as you'll know, there's nowhere you can go and try one out. There is a Ray Ramirez in the Bass Gallery, so maybe next time I'm visiting the Big Smoke I could try it out. Maybe cheaper to hire myself a personal body guard for the evening 😉
  12. @TheRev Yeah I think you're right mate. Maybe it was sold elsewhere under another name. Thanks
  13. Can't find any info on the web about this Artisan. I was toying with the idea of trying it out for open mics/jams/pub gigs when I might not want to take my acoustic (e.g. pubs where a few of the punters can be slightly worse for wear). Thanks.
  14. Get your trousers on you're nicked ! 😉
  15. Highly unprofessional IMO, I doubt this person will much of a future in the sound business. I'd be callin my lawyer!!!
  16. There're loads of free tutorials available on DiscovereDoubleBass.com, and many courses that you can sign up to which very reasonable, I've signed up to two. I find the website great to use. If you're playing pizzicato, I also found this DVD Jazz Upright Bass DVD by Ed Friedland, to be a great DVD to take you through the basics from stance, hand positioning, tone, etc. Good luck!
  17. Friggin great track there - will be looking out for your live dates!
  18. I'd say the Ford Cortina mark 4. Or is that a mark 3? Also has the distinction that Tom Robinson wrote a song about Cortinas.
  19. I do like the look of these, and the strings & AeroSilk pickup look like the same as on my Ibanez SRH400, and sound great. Agreed the video doesn't demo an acoustic-type sound, but I'm sure you'll be able to get a usable tone out of it. Let us know what it gigs like.
  20. Yes I saw Greg in a foyer gig at the jazz festival at Colston hall last year, & I've checked out his Paper Crane video - amazing upright bass tone!
  21. Sounds reasonable to me & a good variety of things to work on. If you do find a good teacher in the Bristol area, I'd be interested, I'd like to tighten up my technique.
  22. Great bloke, I learnt my upright skills from his DVD, which is ace. His magazine articles are always an interesting read as he has such an encyclopedic knowledge of bass and music generally.
  23. what's wrong with my bedroom??
  24. @Rabbie, hi, did you have to alter your nut or bridge grooves to switch to your gut strings from Spiro wiechs? Just wondering whether to make the jump,. Though crazily my current spiros have been on about a year now and are settled nicely and get better & better. Even on the G I can get a nice tone by playing higher up the neck and using more skin. I thought I might find a shop with a bass setup with guts to try first if it was an 'easy' swap. Thanks.
  25. @Happy Jack, watched the session on Dave P, what a great guy!
