1. This thread is worthless without pics! And Faron (continuing in the bad grammar vein), I would have never had you down as a sexual deviant, you sempt like such a normal guy when you sold me a cab a couple of years back. Just goes to show, you can never know......
2. I liked the tone on mine - it was a newish Korean one (if that makes any difference) and the QC was fine. If I could have lived with the neck dive I probably would have kept it.
3. Definitely a bargain. BTW, Dane off the Rick Resource Column offers wiring harnesses for these at very reasonable prices so you can have all the 4004 and 4003 sounds in one bass should you be so inclined.......
4. I'd love either/both of those. Pity we've both got more basses than cash!
5. Really nice Clarky....wish I could be more than a tyre kicker but it would be a waste of TIM me putting anything up for sale to get the cash together because nothing ever sells on here...
6. Hmmmm, interesting. I'm not a lawyer but I've had to fight a number of licensed/patented tech issues over the years. Reading through the BC topic RIC would appear to have a cast iron case in terms of defending their trademark, however IIRC they have to fight all Transgressions brought to their attention - they can't pick and choose their fights.....
7. How could anyone want a Kingbass over a Stingray? It's the ergonomic disaster of the Status family. Then again my favourite status is the Stealth so what do I know ;-)
8. That's very, very nice. If I didn't have to lose my shirt selling a 4004Cii to acquire it then, well, I'd acquire it.
9. It was grey, I read that McClusky resprayed it with halfords primer
10.
You do'nt even need to swap the pickups to get a 4003 sound. The HB-1 (pickup) has 4 wires. Just connect 1 coil and you have a vintage 4001 sound. Diagrams are available on the internet to have a switch for dual/single coil, or even the tone knob to gradually adding the second coil.
I'd heard that.....just need to find someone to do it, competently.
11. A real shame 4000, I love the contouring on the 4004, it's what drew me to mine, don't get me wrong I love the 4003 but the ergonomics don't work for everyone. These are great basses with a lot of flexibility soundwise, it cant do a 4003 but if thats what you want the pickups are a direct swap. Good luck with the sale
12. Wouldn't you consider the bog basic Squier which are cheap as chips - I've got a Mighty Mite in mine, just needed a bit of shimming.
13. Very nice, unfortunately I don't have any 5ers to trade.
14. It doesn't look refinned to me John, just paint settling - my recently departed US made Jazz was pretty much like this. I'm not an expert on Ricks, but both that I've had, had non conventional finishes. I don't know if it's part of what makes up the UV cured paint on the newer ones but on dark finishes they sempt to have a haze to the gloss - subtle but definitely present.
15. The VVT mod is pretty common according to the resource forum....... Gives control over the mix pup levels in the dual pup setting. The HB1 pups are tappable which gives single coil 4003 type sounds should you want it. I think one of the problems with the 4004 is that you expect it to sound like a 4003; it can if the mods are made but the stock sounds are pretty good and easily tweak able on the amp EQ if it gets a bit 'dark' (I'm using an LM3 with a BF compact - hardly a treble monster and it can still cut through nicely). I'll probably get the VVT mod done when the bass is out of warranty but will wait and see what difference that makes before looking at sourcing the coil tap mod.
16.
MB1. African and White a great bassline. However my faves gotta be" Working with fire and steel"!
Gotta agree Mart, and as a Steelmaker the line 'and things get f#*^d and you're to blame' has haunted me many times.......
17. Ditto, had a few guards off Howard meself, all been great!
18.
You have to get permission anyway, don't you?
Certainly do, signed in triplicate by JH himself!
19.
Naaa! BP isn't a BC admin.
How do you know....... ;-) Seriously though, that's damn tough luck. Happened to me once when swapping necks on a mint MIM Fender Jazz, which is why I tend to avoid taking the neck off basses now if I can avoid it.....certainly wont be doing it on my new Rick.
20. Sorry this didn't work out for you in the end George. I'm starting to bond with mine because the sound is so different to my other basses. These are quality basses and that's a great price, have a bump on me!
21. That is so nice....love MM fretless basses. Alas no cash......bump.
22. Hi George, Glad this has worked out for you mate. Took me a little while to get used to the 4004 sound but it's starting to grow on me. My fave is still the bridge pup solo'd which is sort of a 4003 with added depth. The best way I can describe it is that you can get the Joe Jackson 'different for girls' bass sound without using a pick! Wish you were a bit closer because I'd still like to straighten the neck a little to get a little more buzz and lower action. I'm still likely to do the VVT mod and maybe the coil taps but still trying to decide who would be best to do it! PS. You'd have thought, seeing as they're charging so much for a 4004 at Rickysounds that they'd know that the body sandwich was Walnut NOT mahogany! Lol.
23. Really great basses these, but I would say that. Many basses have come and gone but I think I'd sell all my other basses before I sold mine. Have a bump.
24. Mikes a sound bloke, bought a BF Compact off him last year.....if he says it's mint then it really will look unused. Have a bump.
25. Cracking bass at a good price George, wish I had the funds mate. Good luck with the sale.
