Before you sell such a fine instrument why not investigate Scott Devine's technique for making a four string play like a five. He used an EBS octave pedal. The low octave is full on and the natural sound is off completely. Just play the notes a bit further up the neck. He's a four string player too and it works for him.
I hadn't thought of that! Just picked up an IRig Stomp so could try this out. Martin! long time no hear.....yes I always said this would go to the grave with me.

A very very long shot this but here goes. I've recently found myself in a 60s type band and the singers keys are making quite a bit of the set list a struggle on a 4 string. Now I generally hate 5 strings, have tried and failed to adapt 3 times.....but I've decided to try again for the sake of this project. My main go to bass for this stuff is my trusty Status Streamline (the 6th one ever made!), I've loved this bass ever since acquiring it about 3 years ago. It's in excellent condition with no dings, scraps or scratches and maybe against my better judgement this is the bass I'm looking to trade against a very specific 5. Because I hold the Streamline in such high esteem my fiver of choice is no surprise a Streamline 5. At a push I'd also look at a Status Stealth 5. Both these basses are as rare as hens teeth so no major expectation of success but hey ho. Pics available on request. Oh, nearly forgot, in accordance with the new rules I'm putting a trade value of £1000 on the Streamline 4.

[sub]This is common on Fretless Rays. I've had 4 (3 Ray4s and a Ray5) and all have been zero at the nut with a dig into the board behind the nut. The Ray5 needed a board level, I had this done by John Shuker and he commented on the rutting behind the nut as a bit of a design error on the Ray. He also commented that the nut was glued in which made removal (to facilitate the levelling) without chipping the pau ferro board near impossible. I'm being careful with the board on my current Ray4 F'less for this very reason.[/sub] [sub]Regarding the levelling affecting you decision tho - I wouldn't worry too much, it's a fair slab of wood and should take a good number of levels before a replacement. Stick to flats and you might never need it.[/sub]

Fender CS 1964 Jazz Bass in Sea Foam Green
martthebass replied to Old Horse Murphy's topic in Gear Gallery
That's just gorgeous Nick. I was umming and ahhing with letting my FSR Jazz 75RI go for a Custom Shop but all the ones I've tried haven't made me go as weak at the knees as I'd expected. You might have just changed that with this one......good job I'm a good 150 miles from Stevenage. -
Started my Bass playing 'career' in a JD covers band back in 1982..... Set my bass playing back for a number of years lol. However, still love em and when New Order finished off with JD covers at their Manchester Apollo gig earlier this year it was sublime.

What are really unfashionable at the moment?
They make it out of graphite, and the newness and novelty has worn off hasn't it? If they could come up with just one modern and inivotive graphite bass- well they could repare their reputation no end. In my mind the pickups and Eq's could be more interesting... I'm imagining taking pointers off Wal pups and EQ and adding carbon fiber.... and suddenly you have something no one else has
Luke, that's like saying....'it's made out of wood, that's old hat'! Graphite's just another material that has unique properties and can be fabricated to make a pretty good bass (or guitar). I like my Status because it's light, never goes out of tune, never needs the neck adjusting and has no dead spots (can't say the same for my Fenders), novelty has nothing to do with it. Having said that I wouldn't be without my P & J! -
That's an interesting design. I've spoke with Rob I believe it was, about getting a headed Status Stealth built/shipped to me; they are truly Killer basses. Never did the deed (yet) There's this one available in the States; that is actually making me drool on a daily basis. Headed Stealth neck thru w/ leds... I guess we (at least I ) can't be John Entwhistle, with massive collection, eh?
You're not wrong there. I've fancied a Stealth 2 for ages (as far as i can tell it's a Streamline with a conventional body shape) but i dont have a spare £2K lying around.
"Lovely, lovely bass, ziggy. You lucky boy. " ahh thanks guvnor, traded it with a beutiful bass that i do miss alot but boy does this beast play crikey and cuts trough my band big time yup gold u retro knobs then all is sweet. i love the sound from the brigde pick up and seems ike all notes ring trhough.
I sometimes forget how well Statii cut through in the mix. Been playing mainly in the classic rock 5 piece over the last few months so it's been Precision all the way. Rehearsed with the 4 piece 60s/70s band the other day and took the Streamline for a change. Sounded like I'd taken about a pound of cotton wool out of my ears....

Nice brace Nick.....but you need a Jazz in that line up ;-)

I don't like it when they are 'extreme' but the subtle SC design on my Status Streamline seems to suit it ok.

What is your favourite song to play live?
I have been playing stealers wheel stuck in the middle with a dep gig I have for a few months, never played it before but it's a good one that goes down well.
Yeah I've always liked that......never mastered playing and singing it at the same time though! -
Sandberg Ken Taylor Basic HH vs Musicman Stingray HH
martthebass replied to hollowsbass's topic in Bass Guitars
I briefly had a Sandberg KT, very good fit and finish but didn't sound anything like a Ray. Much darker sound out of the Humbuckers - less in your face. Very nice bass though - just didn't do it for me. -
Mine Streamline is an early one (number 6 I think), don't know if the profile has changed at all? Now you mention it though it is very slightly flatter up to about the 5th but after that I don't notice a difference - always found it a very easy, fast neck.
-
Daft question but did you remove any shims that were stuck in the neck pocket. I've done a couple of neck swaps and on both occasions had to change shimmage.
-
Ergonomically, the Steinberger's strap pivot is hard to beat for comfort. Also thye Streamline has the Status neck profile -wide and flat - which is great if thats your thing. Personally, I find it very tiring to play.
Strange, never really noticed that, mine feels pretty much like my Precision and Ray neck wise.
-
Led Zep 1 eh? No surprises there then.....the first Rush album is 'Led Zep 1 the reprise'
-
+1 on the mighty mite neck - slotted straight in on my Affinity P bass with only a bit of shimmage needed. £95-100 should sort it new off the bay easily. If you need to go cheaper, Squier necks come up on here from time to time at anything from £35 upwards. One word of warning if you spot an Affinity neck check the tuner holes - on the two I've had they are smaller diameter posts so you'd need to drill them out if you were fitting standard tuners.
