Musicman Sterling LE Black Onyx(What Value??)
martthebass replied to blunderthumbs's topic in Bass Guitars
I'd have thought the value of the LE would be up there with something like a 30th anniversary Ray. Depending on the day anywhere between about £1000 at the low end but maybe as high as £1300 if an MM collector takes a shine to it. I've had a standard Sterling in the past. playability (neck wise) just as fast as a Jazz. Sound wise - much closer to a Ray......i.e. nothing like a Jazz. Harder edged and less versatile sound palate wise than a Jazz but sits in a mix well and a great sound if you like it. Personally I do but I wouldn't have one as my only bass. Just my 2p -

Your Basses - What do you love/hate about them?
martthebass replied to Linus27's topic in Bass Guitars
Fender/Squier afinity/Mighty Mite Bitsa: Pretty much my goto bass at the moment, looks like a 70's BBM Fender, sounds like a Precision. Positives; plenty of dings and cheap as chips so I'm not worried about any venue. Negatives; .....wish it was a real early 70's BBM Fender Precision. Fender US 75RI Fender Special Run 2002: Such a nice bass that only stays in the box as much as it does because it's too nice to use at most of the places I play. Positives; The best sounding Jazz I've ever owned, the lovely flame maple neck, it oozes quality. Negatives; Not sure red is 'my' colour. Status Streamline: There could be a nuclear apocalypse but this bass would still be in tune after the fallout settled. Positives; A fantastically constructed bass with sounds to match, so light (but still feels quality made) that you can play it all night without feeling it. Negatives: The looks mean it doesn't always get taken seriously (as I found out at an audition last year) by people not in the know! Musicman Stingray Fretless: The 2 band Stingray is all the fretless I will ever need. Positives; figured birdseye maple neck, hair-bredth action and growly sound pallet. Negatives; Not the best fretless to try and repoduce DB basslines with. -

Modifying a Squire P bass (First time modifying)
martthebass replied to JoshL's topic in Bass Guitars
I've got my Affinity P bass all modded up now. Bridge was swapped out for a high mass type by the previous owner - its stable and works well compared to the BBOT so I've left it alone. I was going to change the pups but decided to get the axesrus CTS kit first - it really improved the sound so much that I haven't needed to swap out the pups. I hated the original small tuners so I swapped the whole neck out for a mighty mite and put on some 70 s wilkinson tuners - looks the part and is much more stable tuning wise. The pick guard was swapped out for a BassDoc one, I couldn't send the original first time so had to take a best guess, it was fairly close but needed a bit of work. I've now sent Howard the original and ordered another but in 3 ply Tort which will be a much better fit. This bass has ended up as my main gigging bass despite having a 'proper' Fender in the house....not having to worry about dinging it frees you up on stage! -
You're doing the right thing Shaker. I've played Fenders and their clones for the past 30 years. It was always a dream of mine to own a Ricky. The sale of my house last year made my dream a reality. I tried so hard to get on with it, great sound and absolutely gorgeous to look at but just too different in the way it sat and played. Eventually it had to go and the SR5 that sits in it's place is so much more me
You and me both......I think we both found out that Fender shapes work better ;-)

Cheers J. How do you find the FSR 75RI compared to your 74?
-
Here's my latest toy, bought from Stealth on Basschat. It's a 2003 Fretless with the most wonderful figuring on the neck and a superb bass to play too
Nice one Nick. Must have made a batch of these figured fretless necks around 2002/3 - looks just like mine.

Big +1 from a fellow CAR FSR 75RI owner.....they are rather special aren't they? As a matter of interest how do the 3 Jazzes compare?

Useless to me because it has one too many strings, but that Bacchus is stunning...
