1. Wish I had something to offer up against this Nick, I'm starting to miss having a Jazz/P bass in the fleet. Have a bump all the same.
2.
I have very fond memories as a kid of curly-wurlys and a copies of 2000AD therefore to me they are next to priceless, I'll give you one of each plus I'll bung in a roll of caps to sweeten the deal. You win out big time - a bunch of priceless item vs a mere bass. That's way better than Pete's cheeky offer.
Loved early 2000AD, especially Slaine and Strontium Dog (I know, that was a bit of an import). Think my 200 issues or so went to a charity shop.....
3.
Warm butter or out of the fridge, hard with some crumbs and someone elses old crab paste spread stuck in it?
Lurpak 'soft spread' at 4 degrees Celcius - new carton
4. Agree Pete, don't think I'd buy a pre eb without trying it first, granted I've only played 5 or 6 to date but the variation surprised me. On the other hand all 30ths play like butter
Its back with no reserve! Is this guy going to pay for my divorce if I end up buying it, My wife is still worried about me trying to buy it last time! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...=STRK:MEWAX:VRI I was the winning bidder with reserve not met last time and got a second chance offer at that price but didnt take it so I guess he has decided to let the public decide what its worth. Last time he didnt get straight back about the scratchplate but has now confirmed to me that its the correct one and white. 2 things still worry me well 3 actually 1-He says "No haggling" which is fair enough but he doesnt offer the questioner to come and try it out for himself, That would be my first reply if I were selling mine as thats when you really fall for a pre EB IME. 2-He says the 3 band EQ was already done when it was purchased 20+ years ago which would of made it a very early 3 band preamp at the time for a four stringer after the 5er got it from new in 87'. I would of thought that was a much more recent addition? 3-After talking down the grapevine with a certain top luthier he warned me that the very early ones did have some truss rod issues so without being able to fully test its operation he wouldnt touch it. Im still going to have a bid though (BTW if I had won it for £975 last time I would of honoured it sight unseen Im not an ebay idiot but as a second chance offer and the delay on some of the info I wasnt obliged to before anyone starts )
5.
For £400 who wouldnt!
Put a '1' in front of it and it'd go some way towards my 'year of birth' bass.............unfortunately Leo didn't make Rays back in the 60s
6.
Yeah but that Sue Ryder is worth £......... Are you going to get that too?
Which one d'yer think I used at the 'Kebab and Calculator' public beer emporium last night? (a congenial watering hole where they sweep up the eyeballs at the end of the night). Pete, you reaaaaaally don't want a cheap pre-eb copy now do yer!
7. Squabbling, bickering, it never used to be like this.....................................(yes it did)
8. I find it about the same width at the nut but a bit more of a handful front to back than my old MIA 2004 P bass.
9. Another faker here mate....see how much company you've got! Sometimes I'm embarrassed to use the gear I've got, after the last gig I considered selling the lot other than my trusty Sue Ryder. Theres nothing wrong with working out stuff with the guitarist in the band if that's what works for you, alternatively spend a bit of time with the old iPod and practice amp. Occasionally when I'm in one of my, 'cant play for toffee' modes I set myself a target of learning a song I consider tough. A few years back I considered that Rio was way beyond me, a few practice hours later I'd pretty much nailed it.....
10. Haaaa, My year of birth bass also. If I sold all my gear maybe I'd be able to afford the neck and a few screws of a 63P.....
11.
All the strings (=4) and all the notes up to about fret 9 (i.e. two octaves) - I rarely venture much further.
+1 Amazing how many bassists jibe be on Jam nights for not being adventurous enough to move into the dusty end.....
12. One day I will put in an order for a purple tint Stealth 4........dreams
13. Starting to see some lovely modded Sues ( or should that be Ryders? ). Now I've finished the minor beautification exercise on my fretless Ray it's time to start on Sonic Sue...........decisions decisions
14. First Bass Owned: A bloody awful 'Avon' Gibson EB0 copy. Very quickly replaced by a 1982 JV Fender Squier 57 P bass. 'Go To' Bass: Status Streamline, does it all basically. 'Your' Bass: EB Musicman Stingray, 4 strings only, 3 band, no bloody pre-EB and only one pup!
15. Chris, gotta poke a bit of fun at yer mate.......I thought you wanted something with 'versatility'? Nah, TBH I sympathise with you. You just need to do this every so often to realise that what you're looking for, you already have! Guess there's no point in saying, try different strings, different amp/settings/cab(s), your minds made up. I've tried the doublebuck approach (albeit a G&L) and couldn't get back to single H quick enough. Yes it was versatile alright but I spent more time fiddling, for what I finally realised was a single H tone, than playing the damn thing. I love the P sound myself it's just that the sound dissappears on stage for me in as it's backline only and no monitors for most of what I do so it ends up being Ray/Status so I can hear meself. Love the bass Chris and I hope it sells quickly for yer, if it was a single H I'd consider it....
16. Don't know if it's the crappy speaker in my iPad but Geddy's bass sound makes my Status sound 'mellow'
17. Last time I saw them it was the 'Permanent Waves' tour....................is that the time?
18.
Realistically whats the chances of me not banging on about pre EB Rays? Hows my future 30th I hope your looking after it for me
Freshly polished and in it's case at the bottom of the bed. Sad or what
19. Can't compliment S&T enough. Gave them a call to see where I could source new strap pins, pickup screws and pick guard screws and they sorted me out, delivered within 24 hours. Also ordered a black White black pick guard at the same time at a WD beating price. (I was a bit disappointed with my last WD pick guard purchase, the screw holes were miles off and it came without the plastic cover so was nicely scratched, this S&T one is it's replacement).
20.
Yes it is nice, I actually wanted a black pre EB then when I found my natural one it was just too good to miss out on condition wise, Since then I have found natural to look more right for pre EB's, Black and RW for 90's Rays and any colour for 5's for me. Although my teal is very nice and the neck has aged to a mellow colour now. The only problems with that black 79 is the mute kit missing and for that money I would want at least a period case or better still an MM teardrop one.
Will you guys pack it in, you're giving me pre-eb GAS even tho I'm a die-hard EBMM guy. Good job I'm skint and relatively gig less at present
21.
Played out with flats on mine last night, and compared to my J-Type (with Geddy lee PUs) it was a bit too dull*. Where's the best place to buy hotwires - I'd like to try something a little brighter (though less so than rounds) but keep the smooth feel of the flats and with a lower tension. I found I was struggling to fret chords with my little finger, even with a low-ish action. *edit - sounded nice with palm muting on the E and A, but lacked bite/cut, even with lots of EQ fiddling.
Online at www.status-graphite.com
22. Never been much of a fan of halfs or ground wounds, I've always found them a bit on the bright side full stop. Can't help you regarding the weird G but if it's any help I've just fitted Status flats on my Ray Fretless and they are certainly brighter than Chromes (but the lower tension is much more to my liking). I've had them on a week and they are playing in nicely though and already losing some of the zing. Give Rob/Dawn a email, sure they'll comment and replace the G if it's a rogue.
23.
I had MB bass, I loved it, but I wouldn't trade back after having the terror...
Don't say things like that......I've only just got through to pay day without selling a Ray. No more purchases until the holiday's paid for..........orders from she that must be obeyed.
24. Main bass is a Status Streamline which is mega ultra reliable and takes seconds to change strings on ....... So it goes to gigs on it's own. I guess closest I get to a back up is my Sue Ryder which plays the flea pits So again a yes and no
