That lot would work nicely as my retirement fund......

Can give a thumbs up for Status flat wounds. Very reasonable pricing, nice and smooth and low-medium tension. Still a bit bright on my Ray fretless but confident they'll settle down fairly quickly.

I've had a couple of Warwicks, a Corvette and a Thumb. In each case I'd agree that front to back the neck is thicker than a standard Fender profile but the thickness at the nut is sort of Jazzish. In the end both of mine went because of discomfort and hand cramps, yes the apparent neck length was a problem but also because they were neck heavy I was constantly having to keep a grip on it. I think this was the main problem.
I was led to believe when I purchased this that the current 2-piece is original, but I suppose anything is possible?!. If anything, I think this looks better, not keen on the single-piece ones....aren't they single ply too?!. Have to say, the screws didn't even even register with me when I took the plate off, must have been late/early lol. I've said to myself that I might take a G&L Tribute L2000 in part ex, preferably in Sunburst, obviously with the rest in cash. Gonna try and do some sound clips today! Cheers for all the comments guys Si
I had one of these in the eighties, same colour, year, maple fb. Mine had the single ply one piece plate. If yours has been modded I wouldn't be put off it, it's definitely an aesthetic improvement, I hated the one piece on mine!
MB1. Sticker on one bass i purchased read.... "From the Tea rooms of Mars to the hell holes of Uranus" i later found out it had been made in neither!, and was in fact an album by Landscape?
And that is a really awful track, a true waste of 4 minutes or so of my life sometime during the eighties.

Shill bidding - how common?
martthebass replied to spinynorman's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Bid on an item myself recently where I thought a shill bid had been made. I bid just above the minimum bid , nothing happened for 7 days, then with a couple of hours to go I was outbid by a tenner. Considered leaving it but decided to go to the price I was expecting it to go for initially and then turned off the PC so I wouldn't watch what was happening. I 'won' the item but I can see how you could get dragged in. -
Hmmmm mm mm.............silver Streamline

Joe just received my Ray5 fretless, great guy to deal with. Hope the 5er gets more love at your house mate.

I've tried to part with this twice before and failed - so here's going for the third... A problem with my Passat (running over steel scrap - a perennial problem if you work at a steel plant, and the bloody service computer deciding it needs a service about 3 months before I thought it would) has left my liquid cash a little depleted. I've options to deal with it, but in the interests of looking at all options I've got to consider letting my Ray 30th go (again). I love this bass to bits, I've really bonded with it over the year that I've had it, its quite possibly the best Ray (without getting into the pre-eb/eb argument) I've ever played/owned. However, it's in excellent 'collector's' condition and as such it rarely leaves the house, in fact it's done 2 jam nights and 2 practices in my ownership. If you're reading this you know the ante, it's a mahogany bodied 30th anniversary ray with through body stringing, highly figured red laquered maple neck with rosewood board. Think of it as a Classic Ray + except they made 783 and won't be making any more. As I've said, I don't want to part with this and other options will be explored so it may be withdrawn soon (cf. CHRISDABASS and his Big Al), so in terms of business; I'd prefer a partial trade (I still need a good quality 4 string fretted backup) with cash my way. I'll consider excellent condition US Fender Standard Precisions or Jazzes (a 2008 on model preferably) or a standard Ray 4H. For trade purposes I'm valueing the 30th at no less than £1100 - no negotiation on this one I think that's fair. The bass comes with the original C & G special edition case which I don't consider suitable for shipping (problems were experienced with these by MM when they were originally shipped - I wont tempt fate), so collection or meet up only for this one.

Hate to say it but I think prices on MM are a bit better on the bay at the moment - if you dont mind the hassle. I'd estimate maybe £100 better on average for a standard MM (based on watching a few recently) so maybe a bit better on a special. Having said that I didn't take my own advice on the Ray5 I just sold - but I hate paypal and selling on the bay....
I tried a Wal Custom in the 80s... it was horrible. Lifeless, flat and with no bottom end to speak of, no matter what you did with the controls. A couple of years later I had a play with a another example and it was just magnificent. Just goes to show.
Same thing happened to me, major Mick Karn fan, found a Wal in Carlsbro in Sheffield in the mid 90s. It was in good condition and, I kid you not, less than £400. Picked it up played it, wanted to love it but, to me it was a dog.....I wuz gutted. I'd love to try another tho.

Are some people not destined to play 5-strings?
martthebass replied to Evil Undead's topic in General Discussion
I've had 4 goes at 5 string, my last one sold at the weekend. I have no problem with the SR5 neck, in fact I loved it, I came to the conclusion that my problem was swapping back and forward between 4 and 5's. I'd be playing fine on a 5 at a jam/gig and then relax a little too much (as I can/do on a 4) and suddenly start hitting the wrong strings! If I didn't enjoy playing 4s so much I would have made the transition but that wasn't the case so.....no more 5s for me. -
Deleting posts and provenance of equipment sold on BC
martthebass replied to Beedster's topic in General Discussion
Dont think I've ever trawled back through posts to get an idea of 'last price'. I think there's too much variance for that. However I do agree that it can affect forward pricing....the recent price trends on MM's and Warwicks have demonstrated that IMHO. I'm guilty of deleting posts from my own for sale threads but that's primarily to weed out endless 'bumps' on long threads. -
Did a set up on my SR5 fretless a month ago, great job and very reasonable.
