First Bass Owned: A bloody awful 'Avon' Gibson EB0 copy. Very quickly replaced by a 1982 JV Fender Squier 57 P bass. 'Go To' Bass: Status Streamline, does it all basically. 'Your' Bass: EB Musicman Stingray, 4 strings only, 3 band, no bloody pre-EB and only one pup!

FS/FT EBMM Ball Family Reserve Stingray 4HH *SOLD*
martthebass replied to Beedster's topic in Basses For Sale
Chris, gotta poke a bit of fun at yer mate.......I thought you wanted something with 'versatility'? Nah, TBH I sympathise with you. You just need to do this every so often to realise that what you're looking for, you already have! Guess there's no point in saying, try different strings, different amp/settings/cab(s), your minds made up. I've tried the doublebuck approach (albeit a G&L) and couldn't get back to single H quick enough. Yes it was versatile alright but I spent more time fiddling, for what I finally realised was a single H tone, than playing the damn thing. I love the P sound myself it's just that the sound dissappears on stage for me in as it's backline only and no monitors for most of what I do so it ends up being Ray/Status so I can hear meself. Love the bass Chris and I hope it sells quickly for yer, if it was a single H I'd consider it.... -
Don't know if it's the crappy speaker in my iPad but Geddy's bass sound makes my Status sound 'mellow'

Last time I saw them it was the 'Permanent Waves' tour....................is that the time?

Nobody fancy this pre EB Stingray then?
martthebass replied to stingrayPete1977's topic in General Discussion
Realistically whats the chances of me not banging on about pre EB Rays? Hows my future 30th I hope your looking after it for me
Freshly polished and in it's case at the bottom of the bed. Sad or what -
Can't compliment S&T enough. Gave them a call to see where I could source new strap pins, pickup screws and pick guard screws and they sorted me out, delivered within 24 hours. Also ordered a black White black pick guard at the same time at a WD beating price. (I was a bit disappointed with my last WD pick guard purchase, the screw holes were miles off and it came without the plastic cover so was nicely scratched, this S&T one is it's replacement).
Yes it is nice, I actually wanted a black pre EB then when I found my natural one it was just too good to miss out on condition wise, Since then I have found natural to look more right for pre EB's, Black and RW for 90's Rays and any colour for 5's for me. Although my teal is very nice and the neck has aged to a mellow colour now. The only problems with that black 79 is the mute kit missing and for that money I would want at least a period case or better still an MM teardrop one.
Will you guys pack it in, you're giving me pre-eb GAS even tho I'm a die-hard EBMM guy. Good job I'm skint and relatively gig less at present -
Played out with flats on mine last night, and compared to my J-Type (with Geddy lee PUs) it was a bit too dull*. Where's the best place to buy hotwires - I'd like to try something a little brighter (though less so than rounds) but keep the smooth feel of the flats and with a lower tension. I found I was struggling to fret chords with my little finger, even with a low-ish action. *edit - sounded nice with palm muting on the E and A, but lacked bite/cut, even with lots of EQ fiddling.
Online at www.status-graphite.com

Status Hotwires: "half wound" strings, on a P-bass
martthebass replied to mcnach's topic in Bass Guitars
Never been much of a fan of halfs or ground wounds, I've always found them a bit on the bright side full stop. Can't help you regarding the weird G but if it's any help I've just fitted Status flats on my Ray Fretless and they are certainly brighter than Chromes (but the lower tension is much more to my liking). I've had them on a week and they are playing in nicely though and already losing some of the zing. Give Rob/Dawn a email, sure they'll comment and replace the G if it's a rogue. -
I had MB bass, I loved it, but I wouldn't trade back after having the terror...
Don't say things like that......I've only just got through to pay day without selling a Ray. No more purchases until the holiday's paid for..........orders from she that must be obeyed.

How closely does your backup bass resemble your main player?
martthebass replied to ThomBassmonkey's topic in Bass Guitars
Main bass is a Status Streamline which is mega ultra reliable and takes seconds to change strings on ....... So it goes to gigs on it's own. I guess closest I get to a back up is my Sue Ryder which plays the flea pits So again a yes and no -
That lot would work nicely as my retirement fund......

Can give a thumbs up for Status flat wounds. Very reasonable pricing, nice and smooth and low-medium tension. Still a bit bright on my Ray fretless but confident they'll settle down fairly quickly.

I've had a couple of Warwicks, a Corvette and a Thumb. In each case I'd agree that front to back the neck is thicker than a standard Fender profile but the thickness at the nut is sort of Jazzish. In the end both of mine went because of discomfort and hand cramps, yes the apparent neck length was a problem but also because they were neck heavy I was constantly having to keep a grip on it. I think this was the main problem.
I was led to believe when I purchased this that the current 2-piece is original, but I suppose anything is possible?!. If anything, I think this looks better, not keen on the single-piece ones....aren't they single ply too?!. Have to say, the screws didn't even even register with me when I took the plate off, must have been late/early lol. I've said to myself that I might take a G&L Tribute L2000 in part ex, preferably in Sunburst, obviously with the rest in cash. Gonna try and do some sound clips today! Cheers for all the comments guys Si
I had one of these in the eighties, same colour, year, maple fb. Mine had the single ply one piece plate. If yours has been modded I wouldn't be put off it, it's definitely an aesthetic improvement, I hated the one piece on mine!
MB1. Sticker on one bass i purchased read.... "From the Tea rooms of Mars to the hell holes of Uranus" i later found out it had been made in neither!, and was in fact an album by Landscape?
And that is a really awful track, a true waste of 4 minutes or so of my life sometime during the eighties.

Shill bidding - how common?
martthebass replied to spinynorman's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Bid on an item myself recently where I thought a shill bid had been made. I bid just above the minimum bid , nothing happened for 7 days, then with a couple of hours to go I was outbid by a tenner. Considered leaving it but decided to go to the price I was expecting it to go for initially and then turned off the PC so I wouldn't watch what was happening. I 'won' the item but I can see how you could get dragged in.
