1. that's gorgeous A. You mad???
2. Thanks for all those who expressed an interest in this bass. It is soon to be on it's way to Wales where I'm sure it will be well loved.
3.
Somewhere between frets 6 and 9 on the G (on pretty much every Stingray I've ever played), somewhere around fret 4 on the E if you're really unlucky. Often they're not really noticable until you plug in an effect that relies on sustain to do its job (octavers, harmonisers, envelope following effects too to some extent) and then suddenly they're the most annoying things in the universe.
Noticed a nasty one on a Sterling I once tried (5th on the G) but nothing significant on my current Ray or the one that it replaced. If you need (near) perfection then it has to be graphite! Anyway, back to the topic, I tried that Ray in Electro - not the best one I tried IMHO but with a bit of tweaking and if it could be brought dopwn to £700-750, then......
4. My God, Sterling's invented the ASAT bass.......
5. That's tempting Art. Thing is I fear I'd like having a 2 band fretted around so much I'd not get around to defretting it LOL Must resist......
6. Having a bit of a logistical nightmare with this one becasue I haven't got a suitable HSC and don't have quick access to one. I could have traded or sold it 5 times over if I had..........c'est la vie. Tell you what - I'll deliver/meet up within 20 miles of Rotherham/Sheffield or Scunthorpe keep the price at £625 if that is any use to anyone. Artisan - if yours is a rosewood board i'd happily get it defretted ;-)
7. Firstly no comments about the looks - it's a personal thing, you're considering one so you must like it. IMHO, comparing 4H to 4H. Pros: Vast array of sounds, well balanced, nice properly finished neck, reasonable weight Cons: Complicated (knob wise - I found it took some fiddling with), stupid headstock design that inevitably gets wacked, doesn't have the 'personaility' of a stingray (that's a personal; thing I guess)
8. Thanks for the flattering comment G. As you say a really nice bass, just wish it was for me
9. I seem to be stuggling to find an 'easily accesible' trade deal, so this is still up for a trade or, if you're able to collect - £625 collected!!!!
10.
Are these just in the usual dot positions (e.g., 3rd, fifth etc) or do they mark all fret positions?
Yup, normal positions plus first fret.
11. Think you've got me confused with someone else OW1, but thanks for the bump. Not enough strings?.........I struggle with 4! Cheers, Mart
12. Cheers M, nice of you to say so. Not the cheapest fretless out there but it is a goodun .......
13. Nice abalone dots positioned on the fret - as it should be
14. Hi Ash, well it could help to loosen the rod slightly which should cure the problem (couple of 1/4 turns with 15-30minutes inbetween to let settle). But, if the action was ok before the fall it might be worth letting a techie take a look as soon as you can just to check that the neck is still seated ok.
15.
Sounds like you already have a buyer in Rotherham? Stunning bass, GLWTS.
It's not me. The wife would have my danglies...
16.
Oh! thank ye kindly Yeah anything with 24 frets or lines is dandy - I'm loving the whole fretless with lines on ebony thing at the moment, if it had the extra line it'd be going nowhere. All trades considered although I do have something in particular that i'm after directly after its sale! Green is definately the new black and this has both on it to make sure.
Well, keep my OW in mind if it falls through, this would fit nicely in my current set up, Cheers, Mart
17.
No problem, Mart - I'll be picking this one up at the weekend so I'll send you a full report when I've restrung/set it up. I have a line on a mint EB0 at the moment as well. If it's a nice one I'll hold it for you. It'll be cheap as chips, anyway.
Cheers Mate, that would help keep the Ray and Status dink free!
18. Nice score Rich. Let me know what the balance is like, I'm on the look out for a Jam Night 'beater' EBO or EB3 (that's if I don't have to change my LM250 to a LM2 to compete with the new drummer!).
19.
Schnozz was stalking me for my (admittedly fretted) perception
Aahhh. T'would be a shame to ruin a nice piece of ebony with metalwork.
20.
Pssst.... you sure you shouldn't ask him if he'd like a trade with your OW. Just a HINT
Nobody loves Perceptions PB! I don't mind green..........it's the new, erm, black?
21. Amazed this hasn't gone yet. I had a 2002 model in the exact same pg/colour/headstock combo. Only sold it because I was old and foolish.
22. Oh this is nice. I'd love this but can only afford one fretless in the armory and (previous experience dicatates) that it'd take me longer than a week to sell my Overwater. Never mind and bump...
23. Should have read this better - thought you were looking for a lightweight P bass. The problem can sometimes be balance also. I once had a Warwick Corvette Ash standard that weighed about 8lbs. Trouble is it had some neck dive and didn't feel as comfortable on a long gig as my current Stingray which is closer to 10lbs but has excellent balance. If you've got some cash the Status Streamline is about 7lbs and balances perfectly - I can go for hours with this one without any problem. With the 18V pre it can certainly shift some air compared to a P bass.
24.
Did you get the $$ to fill a specific need? If so the P wont fill those boots. P's do have a certain something that is hard to extract from other basses!
+1 The $$ is more versatile but it won't do P like a P can. If you think the P will only be used for certain specific jobs why not pick up a cheaper 'Classic' Squier? I once moved onto a US S1 P bass for a while but found it lacking at some gigs through my MarkBass set up - just couldn't hear it in the mix at times. Ended up going back to a Ray. I loved the P bass at home when I could hear - nice and smooth and nailed 60's covers better than the Ray but what use is a bass that stays at home?
