1. Thanks for all the suggestions guys. Don't think I'll go down the flats route tho - hate them on fretted basses, I agree with Rich on this one. I'll try a bit more fiddling with the 2 end knobs on the LM in the meantime. I'll also keep an eye out for a jazz type trade for my 30th.
2. Really nice bass at a great price. Had the 2 pup version of this (Ken Taylor) and it was every bit as good as a SR5 for a lot less cash.
3.
[Rant] Mart! No! No! No! Do not under any circumstances let some t**t of a singer, or for that matter, anyone [period] dictate to you about your sound. You have some of the lovliest basses both in looks and sound & your rig is top notch, too. As far as the singist goes (for singer, read failed musician) just ignore him! I'll bet he comes from the school of thought that says, "bass should be felt and not heard." Cock! [/Rant]
Rich, do you mind if I print this out and pin it to the front of my cab (124 Font - Arial BOLD)?
4.
A less in your face Stingray is called a Precision
Love em Chris, unfortunately drummers have destroyed my hearing to the point where I can't hear them anymore
5.
Re-eq. Use the tone controls. Whatever. You should be able to get a less in-your-face sound from the Ray. Bernard Edwards used one and he wasn't exactly in-your-face (just sublime ). My mate Stu swears by his and he doesn't use that typical Ray sound and plays 70s stuff.
Done lots of fiddling.........any suggestions? Would like to dial out top end without the bass getting excessive. I think the singer was referring to being able to 'hear' notes more than feel them (no accounting for taste), I do tend to play a little 'clicky' when I dig in but I like a low action (spoiled by the Status!).
6.
Have you tried the Status for the band..? The S4 sure does have some punch, but it depends on the fingers.... have you asked the other band members what they think... im a big Jazz fan and i think everyone should have one in there arsenal....Get a new Fender 2010 and im sure you and they will love it...
Hi A, hows it going? The Status does get a fair amount of use (in the trio I also play in) but for this band there's a 'need' to use something a bit more 'traditional' looking. The 30th is a bit smoother, more refined than the maple board standard Ray that it replaced but at the end of the day it's still an active single pup bass. I'm sure that a 2010 Jazz would suit (or a Lakky JO) but it would mean ousting the Ray - not an easy decision (as these don't come up everyday).
7. She'd probably agree with that if Basses were the same size as Shoes and she had a collection of 'Jimmys'.
8.
Grab yourself a Classic Vibe Jazz...cheap but powerful antidote to the illness you are suffering from!
I'd love to add a 'cheapish' jazz to the collection but in order to keep the peace I agreed to a 3 bass max rule with 'her that must be obeyed' some years back
9. I've been here before. I've had 3 Fender jazzes over the last 20 years. A 1982 Fullerton was my first. I ended up getting gas for a Ray so it went after a couple of years. The second was a 1996 MIM that served as my main gigging bass for about 5 years (to spare the Ray the grot holes I was playing), I ended up pxing that against a Corvette for no other reason than boredom. The last Jazz was a 1999 US fretless that was pretty good but I convinced myself I wanted to go five string (I didn't as it happens) so off it went. So zoom forward to 2010. I thought my current 3 covered everything I needed, the Overwater is a pretty decent Fretless - much too good for a part timer like myself. The Status is just sublime, fits just about every situation sonically (and gravitationally) and the Stingray cuts through and works great in full on Rawk. So anyway, having got over the fact that this Ray weighs a few pounds more the other 2 basses (the OW is surprisingly light), I've started using it routinely for rehearsals with a new band. I thought the Ray would fit in nicely, the set was a mix of light rock (70's stuff mainly) and rock n roll so I was a bit surprised when the singer commented that my sound was a bit 'in your face'. I hate playing around too much with settings etc on stage so I'm thinking the core sound of the Ray might not be for the best here. So, does anyone have any suggestions considering the gear I currently have (in my sig) towards achieving band satisfaction or should I bite the bullet, sell the Ray and buy another Jazz type?
10.
Steve, you could always have The Bass Gallery in Camden put a maple fingerboard on for you! Cost you £300......but hey! lol Si
That would just spoil an excellent bass Never understood the fascination with maple boards, especially on a Ray. The sound difference is so marginal as to be almost irrelevant (what's the eq for anyway). The damned things just get mucky on the unfinished ones anyhow. Nice bit of rosewood that's what you need ....... Suits you sir.
11. I keep coming back to this. Unfortunately I don't have £1500 or a Dirty Blonde
12. Badge. Can play it backwards, forwards, upside down etc, but at a gig if the drummer is even a nanosecond out coming into the break I turn to cr@p.
13. I had the G&L L2500 off ET above. It was a nicely constructed bass but ultimately I let it go because of: - didn't like the neck profile (a little thick thumb to finger) - too many tonal options for me - bit on the heavy side. On the plus side it did have a fantastic core sound. It was replaced with a SR5
14. Having just played a 2 hour straight set with this bass with no I'll effects I've decided to hang onto this for a while. I'll probably get GAS for a special Jazz type sometime in the future but in the meantime I'll give this bass a few gigs - I think it deserves it having spent so much of it's life in a case. Hopefully it won't pick up too many dings on the way but there are 782 other 30th anni Rays out there for the collectors. Thanks to all those who expressed an interest.
15. No love for big red? Off to rehearsal now, I'll take this along, maybe I'll fall in love
16.
This looks sweet!
Sweeter than the sweetest sweet thing sat on a pile of sugar and topped with honey - Disney songs playing in the background are optional......
17. Since found out that Mart is allergic to Mahogany so this crimson terror is still available for trade. To narrow things down a bit looking at excellent condition: Lakky Skyline JO4/DJ4 - some cash adjustment here (negotiable) Sandberg Cali JJ/JM - ditto Sadowsky Metro J type Shuker J Type Overwater J Type Nothing over 8.5lbs tho......
18.
MB1. Top of the shops!
Still can't tempt yer Mart?
19. Very underrated basses IMHO. I went through the same humming and ahhhing a month ago with my Perception fretless. Decided I'd rather have a Jazz or Ray fretless. No interest from anyone on a trade so I kept the bass. TBH since then I've tried a Ray fretless out and the OW knocks the spots off it sonically - you just need to get used to the looks. Good luck with the trade.
20. Cheers Rich. I think the main problem is that I've been spoilt by the Streamline, all basses should be so comfortable! The sound of this Ray is something else tho, it has that depth and smoothness that the Status (try as it might) can't really reach, as I've said above it's unfortunately about a pound too heavy to be comfortable for a short-ass like me on a 2 hour set. The way things are at the moment tho Rich I think it's probably going to stay with me for a while. Having spent an hour in Electro yesterday I couldn't find anything (up to £1000) that I would want to replace this with, the only thing that came close was a Sandberg Cali JJ but even that had the worst setup I've ever seen on a Sandy. PS - showoff with the LEDs, blackouts - pah, any excuse
21. Just given this a good clean and polish to bring of up to carnuba freshness. Having spent the morning surveying all the basses in my local musical instrument emporium I can honestly say I didn't find any of their new basses in any better condition than this.
22. Having just spent the morning up at Electromusic and seeing how little £1200 seems to buy these days this bass looks cheap. I was going to put mine for sale (as opposed to trade) but the experience has put me off a bit.
23. This would go down so well in my retro punk project...
24. Pm's replied to......still available for trade.
