1. Personally... I would go into a shop and try a few basses around the £500 to 800 mark. Choose the one you like best. Then....post in the items wanted section on this forum and see what turns up. I've done loads of trades/buys on here and no-one will look to pass on a duffer. You'll save a few quid and get some good advice in the process also. Your budget should easily pick up a GnL Tribute, Musicman Sub, Jap Jazz/Precision (possibly a US).......the list goes on. If you find you didn't like it then you would be able to movit on through BC without much of a hit.
 2.
Chris May from OW replied on yesterdays thread - he gave his phone number for you to contact him.
Cheers BTS, what service.......almost makes me feel guilty getting one second hand.
 3. Need to do a bit of rod twiddling to get the action how I like it on my new (used) OW but none of my keys seem to fit properly. Can anyone give me a heads up on the correct size, Cheers, Mart
 4.
I thought when I bought a Thumb that I'd probably be buying into neck dive and that it was just something that I'd have to live with. This was simply not the the case, it balances brilliantly. I'm beginning to think the people who found Thumbs neck diving were wearing the basses around their ankles, rather than high on the chest where the Thumb is supposed to be worn!
Mine neck dove(?) like a mutha and I wore it high (not Mark King high but high enough). Loved the bass but the neck dive ultimately made me sell it on.
 5. Need to do a little rod twiddling on my new (2nd hand) Perception. None of my Allen keys are a perfect fit - does anyone know what size should be used? Cheers, Mart
 6. Like many (I suspect) I've been at a loose end for much of this year while the band has had a break. I've kept myself going with jam nights mainly - normally once or twice a week to keep me hand in so to speak. I know it's no substitute for 'the real thing' but it helps pass the time of day. One nasty side effect though is spending too much time on here which has resulted in far too much buying/selling.......
 7.
Goddammit, that was one I was watching - it had listed before, and didn't make its reserve at about £520, so I wasn't taking it seriously at £500 or so when I looked away... If I'd known it'd go for that sort of money, you'd have had a duel on your hands...in a gentlemanly BC-sort of way, naturally... Great bargain!
Yup missed out on it first time around with a bid at £510 (reserve not met), put in a speculative punt at £550 and was lucky to nab it for £532. Feels much nicer than a bass of that price and not a single mark on it - smells like it's been sat in it's box for a year. Nice slab of ebony on the board and nicely contrasting Cedar back and figured walnut frontage. Didn't have much of a clue how much these cost new until I bought it. Just put some TI Jazz flats on it and it now sings like a good un. Now where did I put my old Japan CDs..........
 8. Just picked up a mint condition Overwater Perception Fretless Deluxe for less than £550 from the bay........good deal?
 9.
hmmm.... at that price it's worth the drive up north to collect!..... if it was with a maple board, I wouldn't hesitate.... I'm having a basic 5 made with a maple board in greenburst (...ready early Nov) through Jam Guitars... but it's costing me a lot more... & one less pickup!.... hmmmm....
Nice bit of rosewood on this one as I recall. They'd make a nice matching pair. I compared this KT5 with a basic 4 banger - the second pickup did bring in a lot more tonal options without causing me all the confusion that my old G&L L2.5K did.
 10.
Indeed Mart - The prices have increased so a 5-string Streamline is now £1495 before you start adding any options... Here's my Streamline in action at a recent wedding - And the rest of my motley crew...
Who says the Streamline looks weird........suits you down to the ground Rich I think at nearly £1500 I might have to contain myself regarding the 5er, but I'm enjoying the 4 banger enough for it not to matter. The fretless GAS should imminently be relieved by another (not Status) british bass.
 11. Lovely bass this, missed it as soon as I sold it. It was easily as good as my old ray 5 but it took me a while to realize it. If I had any use for a fiver (and hadn't just turned the cash into an Overwater Perception Deluxe fretless) I think I'd buy it back.
 12. That is a lot of bass for the money T. I had one of these last year but had to let it go after a case of incurable GAS. I got £700 in trade value at Electro for it which shows what a bargin this is. The only thing I could fault was the semifinished feel of the headstock but seing as yours is a 'painted' version that aint a problem here.
 13.
I nearly ordered a Streamline. But Rob told me it was Precision width nut (which I can't get on with) and couldn't do a Jazz width. I still really fancy one though.
Mines 42mm at the nut. I find the profile fast and comfortable and I played Jazzes exclusively for years. You should try one S - it might suprise you.
 14.
innert compound of carbon. Composite has a differant tonal quality because it is so dense. Aluminium necks and the odd neck through Alu, basses likewise have a unique tonal quality and sustain because of the material density. ( a similar tonal change can be noted by changing to a brass nut on a wood bass). The sticky out bits are neccassary because the neck is considerably heavier because of its construction as above, this affects the COG and hence needs some help. The Spirit being lighter doesnt need this assistance (same as my Hohners didnt). I've not tried a Synapse but when I get the chance to I will - out of curiosty. For me tho' it would have to be the original XL-2 or a Status Streamline 4 which is an up-to-date evolution of the original idea using todays tech for the construction. The wooden ones are a facsimilie of the original idea but they aren't the same.
Thanks for that info B. I thought about one of the Synapses but in the end went for OTPJ's old Streamline. These are fairly lightweight but still feel substantial (7lbs on a small body) but balance well. Does anybody know if these are wooden cored? Like the old Steinys these feel 'hard to break'.
 15. The sad thing is this went for less than £380 on the bay. I missed it - gutted
 16.
Yes, I think it's about six months, Mart - And as I believe I told you at the time, once you've experienced the Status sound and playability, everything else sort of fades into the background Glad you're enjoying it, though. The Streamline's definitely my favourite at the moment, although I've ended up playing this particular show on an S2 5-er as the part has some extra low bits to deal with. What's next on the menu, Mart? S2-Classic? For me, I think it's going to be a Streamline 5-string (if Rob can still do them in the old "melted boiled sweet shape!") Rich.
Not sure Rich, got a bit of fretless GAS at the moment but I don't really get on with fretless graphite necks (once had a Status neck on a Jazz and didn't like the sound at all). I would love a Streamline 5er - If I could pick one up for about £1200 I'd have one but I think I'll have to wait a bit before they start coming onto the 2nd hand market
 17.
Well, Status wins through again. Took My Fender Jazz/Sadowsky pre combination as well as the Streamline to the band call for two weeks of the "Footloose" stage show starting this week. Tried the jazz and it just wouldn't cut through the rest of the band (trumpet, saxes, guitar, piano, bass, drums.) The sound was just buried! Strangely enough it sounds much cleaner and more prominent through the MarkBass rig with the horn units, but that's way too much for a theatre. Once I plugged in the Streamline, it cut through everything else like a scythe - Much better So for the dress rehearsal this evening, I'll take the Streamline & one of the 5-string S2's... Seems that as usual, there's no substitute! Rich.
+1 How long have I had your old Streamline Rich..........hmmm 6 months? Usually by now I'm getting bored with a bass and wondering what I could replace it with. Not this time.
 18.
I have to echo the comments about the angle of the dangle! The early ones were worse because the strap peg was on the top side of the top horn. Shifting it to the bottom face of the top horn helps - I do find them uncomfortable though compared to a fender - which is a shame cos otherwise they're crackers!
That's about how I remember it with my 1982 T3. It wasn't heavy as such but being neck heavy it wasn't comfortable to play stood up for any length of time. I've been looking at the T2 v2 Fretless on the bay, it looks pretty much like my old T3 (except for the colour of the pup and TR covers being cream instead of black) but based on what's been said above £300 seems a bit on the steep side. Having said that, IIRC I paid £270 new for mine back in the day.
 19. I've played and owned both in my time. If I'm honest I do prefer the Jazz fretless, but I'm only an occasional doodler on F'less and for fretted the Status and Ray are more than adequate for my needs. Just toying with the idea of spending less on a T3 but don't want to 'overspend' just in case I decide to move it on at some point in the future.
 20.
Hardly describe Westone as Japcrap
Hmmm, slip of the tongue. Had one of these many moons ago (bought new - old git that I am). Suddenly had a hankering for one, trying to decide whether to spend £600 on a Fretless Jazz or considerably less on a fretless T3
 21. Just quickie.....what would be a sensible price for a good condition early eighties Thunder 3? Cheers, Mart
 22. This would be just right for me; Fretless: Check Black: Check Lightweight: Check £875: Ahh, that's that buggered then (px with MM Ray + Cash?) Well back to the drawing board.
 23. +1 Wish I could find a bit more cash A - I'd have that fretless off you in a shot
 24.
Pair of pliers....£3 Good quality hacksaw...£7 Knowing that you've just ruined your instrument...priceless. Go on, be a man, give DIY a go
Think I'll file that with DIY dentistry (knowing my woodworking skills)........ Thanks all for the info. Sad thing is, I know that as soon as I've bid someone will post a vgc MIA Jazz fretless on the for sale board for £575 and I'll let outthat Blackadder like scream.
 25. Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, but I'm looking at bidding on a fretted bass that I'd like as a fretless (having had no look finding a factory fretless to my taste/budget over the last few weeks). So.....what is the cost of a professional defret these days? I would be looking at maple lines in a r/w board (or white plastic if the cost is excessive). Also any recommnedations for the work to b done in the Sheffield/Donny area (I've already thought of Jon Shuker but I don't know if this sort of stuff is beneath him now ) Cheers, Mart
