if it helps my stingray is 1.67 wide against 1.5 on a jazz [well actually an osbourne, ] and 1.75 on a p bass.
Depends on the Precision. My MIA P (2004) feels pretty much the same as my 2005 Ray - 1.625". The 'old P's were 1.75" (Fenderheads will give you more exact info) My 1990 Ray (now departed) felt slightly chunkier but that was lacquered as opposed to oil finished. Not sure about the age of yours - 80's? (My 1990 didn't have the skunk stripe - i.e. like the current neck).

My 702 posts don't seem to have enabled this 'essential' feature......

Rich, I'm another one for not worrying about thru body. My G&L and Std US - I've had strung both ways and really can't tell any difference. To be honest, the only reason I go thru on the G&L de rigour is to put less stress on the bridge screws. And FWIW the MM Ray has a thicker sound than either if dialled in PS....if I had the cash I'd go Sad. The only reason I don't have one is because I'd have to sell all mine to buy one.
Yeh - it was one of those, "oh wow" moments. I've always like the idea of a 5 string, but never found one that I actually wanted to play. The 2500, though, was not only nice to play it's nicer then anything else I've played with any number of strings. The sound is quite something too, although I still can't quite remember what all those damn switches do
Hell, I know exactly what you mean - half the time I don't know if it's active or not I can only just about ''operate' a Precision! Must admit tho, the attention to detail on the US made is awesome. Quarter sawn offset cut necks, best neck-body join I've ever seen and blemish free finish. I'd put it a notch above MM and Lakky Skyline (and 2 above US Fender) in this regard - can't understand why they aren't more popular.

While ever there's music like that SKY will have no problem finding backing for the 'search channels' page........
I recently acquired a Tribute L2500 from one of the guys here and I'm a total convert it's brilliant, even if not the "real thing".
Not so sure there's that much 'sonic' difference between the Tribby and 'proper' L2500. I love the US 2500 I just got from a fellow BC'er; I had a good go on a US and a Tribby recently and 'eyes closed' couldn't tell the difference.
Hey Mart, feeling wealthy today, mate?? Actually, the plan is to see if I can sell this and then sell the TRB-6 afterwards. That'll fund the Status 6-stringer. Rich.
In the current climate Rich I think I'd have to sell all 3 of mine to afford this.

Changing a Jazz bass pickguard
martthebass replied to EssentialTension's topic in Repairs and Technical
Thanks. My son said: 'Why have you done that? It looks awful.' He's not as old school as I am. How's the G&L?
These young uns heh? Having said that both my girls love the G&L. I'm starting to appreciate the G&L - I've changed the flats for the Rounds which is more to my liking. I vastly prefer the neck to the DJ5 I had, the B isn't quite as 'tight' but it still sounds well. I think I still have a preference for the SR5 neck profile (but thats the only area I think it scores over the G&L for me) but despite the depth of the G&L it still feels comfortable, I'll see how I go on during a long gig. Have you had much of a chance to gig the Jazz - it was crying out for some action with a band that would appreciate it? -
I think I've gott a good'un here Mart. It's currently fitted with Wizard 84's and it sounds amazing. How's the G&L?
I think you have Nick....you've had it for more than 3 months so that's a good sign The G&L hasn't done a gig yet but the signs are good - nice sound and the neck is more to my liking than the DJ5 I had. Made the mistake of playing a SR5 for an hour on Sunday tho and I definately prefer the shallower neck profile on the SR - but I think the G&L will grow on me in time. -
While I had the camera out, I thought I'd take some pics of my Burgundy Mist 64 Reissue Fender Jazz, which is the nicest playing and sounding Jazz I've ever heard.
Sorry Nick, it's still 'pink'. Lovely trio. Don't let em fall downstairs -
Hi mate, I played a DJ5 at martthebass' house a while back. It was the passive one & sounded like the classic jazz sound you've always had in your mind. But again, it only does that one sound really. I know what you're saying about active basses. There's just so much more push & sparkle to the sound. I've sold all my passives now as well. Rich.
My DJ5 was stock Lakky Pre and Lakky Pups - not sure how different they are to the Aero's in the older DJ's. I'd agree with Rich on the sound. It did a great vintage Jazz vibe but IMHO wasn't the most flexible bass I've owned. I tried a JO4 in Electro just after I sold the DJ, on balance it sempt much brighter to me with a more 'modern' Jazz type sound, again just my opinion but I preferred the JO.

Where did the Nu-romantic sound come from?
Give me the early eighties anyday compared to the talentless wonders today. I think it's a bit harsh to say that the early eighties was a dull time for music. You had the dawning of new romantics, new wave, hip hop, goth, electro & Ska..to name a few off the top of my head...what have you got now?
+1, being an eighties reject meself. I guess you had to be there to understand it? Also Mark1 Human League/The Future, early Depeche and UVox - Class.... -
I think the EMG's help a lot mart, but they're quite a Marmite sound. It's not a bass I'd use for every song. Bloody nightmare eh? Shall we start a Deaf Bassists Club?
Might have to Nick, gotta feeling that soon the only way I'll hear the bass is through my feet -
Listened to a Squier VMJ last night for the first time...
martthebass replied to Adrenochrome's topic in Bass Guitars
Okay, so last night myself and my drummer went to a jam night in Harrogate. The 2 basses there were a newish 3 band Stingray with maple neck and a newish Squier VMJ. I actually preferred the sound of the Squier. Now I suspect that the the 'Ray may not have been EQ'd and/or played in a style to suit my tastes [it sounded a little flat, and was mainly being used for blues and rock'n'roll]. But the point is I thought the Squier sounded great and I noted it was very even between the strings and up and down the neck, the sort of thing that lets down some cheap basses. It's good to know that there are some very nice sounding affordable basses available.
Gotta admit a Ray isn't my bass of choice for these 2 musical genres. Now if it was 'kick ass' blues......
