** GONE** Fender USA P Bass (New model)- As new **GONE**
martthebass replied to Old Horse Murphy's topic in Basses For Sale
Now with my bloody deafness (or whatever it is) playing up it was a it of a pointless exercise.
Tinnitus is killing me at the mo as well Nick - don't understand it, only in one ear as well (the Elacin plugs have their limitations after all!). Your old P bass is stuck in the bedroom at the mo and I'm having to use the Ray to get around it until it hopefully settles down. How did you get around the problem with your Shuker P 5 - is it naturally less 'P like'? -
This is one reason why I didn't buy a MM Stealth Bongo. Look great new - not when they are a year old with big shiny spots.

Changing a Jazz bass pickguard

Brown Tort Dave - and don't forget the pics when it's fitted! -
Now you see, the sound you describe there is not what i want. Although im using chromes on my DD i think im going back to nicks. Im not after a vintage sound, nor a bright sound, just something warm with a nice punch. I guess a generic P bass tone. I would like to try a GL2500 out but for now im hooked on the P sound.
Now I'm confused. How can a P with 4 year old rounds not be 'warm'? Fussy bugger........
The issue though is that while ill happily use a DJ im really after a 5 string P.
G&L L2500, passive, flatwounds, roll off the bridge pickup. Sounds like my MIA Fender P with 4 year old rounds. Still on honeymoon with this bass tho, so I might hate it in a few weeks................nah

I'd definately try and get a play on a DJ5 before you buy. I for one felt it was a brilliantly made bass that nailed the vintage Jazz sound well but the neck felt like a long plank to me. 35" scale, v.flat radius and big string spacing. For me - very much a Marmite moment. Just noticed you've got a 5501 so I guess you know what you're getting into. On that basis if you like the 5501 it's a no-brainer....

Nice trio. Just goes to show that the crash in MM prices is to someones benefit. Everyone needs at least one MM in the 'collection'. Regarding selling - theres sod all on TV anyhow! Keep the family together.

*****SOLD***** Squier Vintage Modified Fretless jazz bass
martthebass replied to Chris2112's topic in Basses For Sale
What are these like, is it worth swapping stuff out on one, changing the bridge and pickups etc ?. I'm after a jazz bass, and I want an electric fretless so I'm thinking I may combine the two things and get a fretless jazz.
I tried one of these out about 8 months back and was v.impressed - I ended up getting a MIA jazz fretless, mainly because I wanted a RW 'board instead of the phenolic and the US pups were a bit 'smoother'. But the VMJ hits well above its weight -I for one am seriously considering one if I can ever find house room -
Indeed I am Dave, just a bit surprised that it is Quarter Sawn on a 'production' bass. Can't wait to see the Decade btw - how long now?
-
So now it's clear....this one is a quarter sawn but it's pot luck whether you get QS or flat.
Discussion on this issue at Talkbass
Cheers Dave, much appreciated. Glad the fretless is going well. I've just got to find room now to smuggle in a Squier VMJ F'less......

That Wal is absolutely gorjus. If I had 1300................slightly used kidney perhaps?
-
I've got one, but i dont know what quarter sawn maple looks like, The neck is yellowish and woody
Indeed it is...... Think of the side of a plank rather than the front (ish)
-
Good bits. After 20 odd years of playing I can just about hold a tune. Bad Bits. Tinnitus Heavy gear Generally ignored by non-bass playing musicians
-
Having just taken delivery of this beast courtesy of a fellow BC'er earlier this week - today is the first chance I've had to have a proper look at it. Looking at the neck construction I could swear it is quarter sawn maple which I thought was a construction only reserved for high end basses (a la US Laklands, Sadowskies and the like). Anyone else got a US G&L who could comment?
If you have a maple neck, it has to be black surely? Otherwise the anodised guard looks great Pluck
Even with Rosewood - it still has to be black...
Hah, small world, think I may have seen you in dizzy spells? Hot Ice - long way down the line ended up as a trio with me and the guitarist and a new singer but we never worked as Hot Ice again. Let me know if you're doing anything local.
Well Parcel force 24/48/72/whatever finally delivered the G&L2500 that has replaced this jazz F'less. All I can say is that it was well worth the wait, this is a truely excellent bass and I hope that someone will prod me repeatedly with a big stick if I ever try to sell it.....

I had a Thumb bass for about a year. Don't know if the neck dive was serious, but the bass always wanted to hang to the horizontal, not good with a neck that 'long'. Tried big straps, comfort Strapps etc but nothing seemed to stop the damn thing - in a 2 hour gig I sempt to be liting the neck back to 45 degress about a 100 times. Loved the bass but in the end I had to sell it.

TRADED: G&L L-1505 FIVE STRING, USA NOT TRIBUTE.
martthebass replied to Cabal's topic in Basses For Sale
Sixteeth aniversary model, sounds great. Chuffed. Its not the first Precision i've let slip through my fingers over the years. Had to choose between that and another offer of a Warkwick $$ in the end. Hard choice, i really liked the look of the Warwick, but you just can't go wrong with a Precision. Pretty much the definitive bass sound for me, if its a good one. I should really have gotten one in the first place and been been done, but my head was turned by the G&L. Did you manage to trade the Jazz? Cheers, Jake M
Yup, It's now in the safe hands of Essential Tension and his G&L L2500 should hopefully be with me tomorrow am. Think you made the right decision between the $$ and the P BTW. -
Think I'm financially buggered because I like MM's and Warwicks. Of the 2 tho I've only stuck with MM, but that's only because I'm a wimp and couldn't get on with the neck dive on my Thumb BO.

Good to see yer back Chris, the place wasn't the same without you.
