The ones I've played have been pretty nice. In particular, martthebass's black DJ5. That was the nicest quality one I've tried. It also did the old school jazz sound very well. I really wanted to like the Duck Dunn I tried & a couple of the 45-01/02's but they just felt cheap to me. Seems like you have to try before you buy in order to get a really nice one, much like Fenders.
Think that's what I was trying to say Rich - only you said it better. I think, like you I tried all the Lakkys in Electro. I liked a DJ5 natural because it was nice and light - it was about a lb lighter than my DJ5 but somehow it felt cheap and lacked grunt. The DD just felt cheap. The best of the bunch was a JO4 in 3TS lovely sounding and playing but £825. I picked up a new black MM SR4 that was lying around for comparison and unfortunately (for my pocket) it convinced me to sell the DJ5 and get another MM. I'm not saying I wouldn't buy another Lakky but I guess I wouldn't buy one blind (just like Fenders). I guess it would be boring if we all liked the same thing......

GAS! Is there a cure? Do we want to be cured?
martthebass replied to NJE's topic in General Discussion
I've come to the conclusion that my GAS is my wife's fault. Reasoning: the wife imposed a 3 bass rule on me - foolishly I accepted. So, I have a 4 banger gigging bass (MIA P bass), a backup 4 (Ray 4H) and a nice 4 string fretless (MIA Jazz) for fun. However I keep going thru this swapping the fretless back and forth for a 5 er which ends up with me changing all basses at some point. I've made the argument to just buy a decent 5 er and go up to 4 basses but I keep losing :-( -
Found an interesting 'finish' quirk on my jazz bass
martthebass replied to Sibob's topic in Bass Guitars
My 1999 MIA Jazz 3TS Fretless (No S1) is exactly the same as this one. -
Ooooooooooooooohhh. Might have to sell the Jazz F'less to fund one of these.

Fantastic combination! Tho I would say that.......
I don't like the look of those round bridges.
Ditto, but then again the MM bridge ain't any better and at least the Lakky's offers thru body stringing (wish my newish Ray did).
I had a 55-01 DLX and really loved it but it was just so damned HEAVY! definately something to watch out for!
Just to even out this thread a bit. Regarding Skylines: The weight is definately something to watch for, the DJ5 I had was ok at ~10lbs and nicely balanced. The Bob Glaub on the other hand was a bit over 9.5lbs and not balanced so well - I I only kept for about a week and was glad to go back to my MIA P bass. The positives for me on Lakkys were mainly the sound but for build quality, I prefer the MM's I've had (and Ironically the MIA P bass I currently have) tho TBH this only was with respect to minor paint imperfections and (against the MM) hardware - this is just a personal opinion tho. As with anything try them out and see what you think. Gotta be honest tho, I would love a go on a US JO4.

How often do you change your strings?
martthebass replied to Sarah5string's topic in General Discussion
I guess to an extent it depends what you want. On my P bass I like it to sound fairly 'dull'. I haven't changed the strings since buying it mid last year, dont intend to change them until they start visibly wearing (dull grey stretching marks over the most common notes). On the Ray I like a bit of zing - so change maybe once every 6 months or so. BTW boiling never worked for me - anyone else ever found this work? - are the EB string wipes any good?. Also, if you've got a nice active circuit and don't want hyper zing you can usually dial back some of the high freqs on the EQ, then just change when they go 'dead' and lose sustain. -
Don't count mistakes - you won't make any - it was meant to be like that There isn't a gig goes by without me making clangers and that's on a set we've been playing since God was a lad. Enjoy Saturday - hope it's the first of many.

Been down this road meself. Had a 1990 MM Ray, sold it and bought a Sterling last year. Really liked the Sterling neck but somehow didn't like the smaller body as much or messing about with the controls. Sold it after about 6 months and bought another Ray. Your mileage my vary....
Hi I emailed you straight back to let you know there will be a delay and asked what you wanted to do. I assume you did not not get the email? Regards Mark
Sorry Mark - my Bad. I'm on hol and couldn't check my email from this pc. As there's a backlog I'll cancel my order if that's ok and sort something with Nick, Cheers, Mart
Nice Ray. How does it sound through the yellow eyeball? And what about the Trace combo? I'm guessing the Mark Bass sound is a lot less coloured (ironically ).
Still playing around with the MB rig at the mo so no fixed opinions as yet. Early impressions are that I prefer the TE combo with my Precision and the MB with the Ray. I always found the TE a bit 'fizzy' and live with the Ray (and my old now departed 2 bander too) but spot on with the Precision - guess there's more experimentation to go on. The MB seems to tame the Ray a bit, but I guess this is more due to the 15" MB cab (seems to have more low end than the TE) - if I was using a 2x10 or 1x12 MB cab I guess this would be different.
-
Cheers Rich. I liked the Colour Scheme on your old S1 Jazz so much I bought the Ray equivalent. Not had much chance to gig the MB as yet - still using the TE (its a long story) but hope to press it into service in the next week or so.

Edit for new stuff......

Here's my little contribution - with the 'obligatory' Stingray.
The Tort guard is all I'd do to it. If you love the sound, there's not much point in changing the bridge. Are you going to use the thumb rest or is it going to just get in the way, Marcus? Rich.
+1. My MIA Jazz is a mirror of this pretty Squier. Anyone know where to get the US style TS pickguards with the truss rod cut out? (sorry for the hi-jack)

MODERATORS: HEADS UP!!! TOO MANY SELLERS IN TWO MINDS!!
martthebass replied to Apothem's topic in General Discussion
I thought people came here for advice - and IMHO that includes advice on selling, even regarding the price. If I put something up for sale, I would like to know if other people think I'm asking too much or too little - and that actually has happened to me already, here. This is part of what makes this a community of bass players, and not a marketplace like eBay or Loot.
Good point, and for this reason I think it's fine as is. If you don't get offered what you believe it is worth then withdraw it. If you feel someone (buyer or seller) is giving you the runaround move onto another punter. -
Unfortunately Aharon you are doomed to failure as you can't get a Stingray 4 with a selector switch for series/parallel/single.
Think we've probably all pm'd him with this little nugget..................................doesn't look like my SR4 w/o switch will be going anywhere soon then

Mid Nineties - height of Britpop. Our agent packed our 5 piece Britpop 'tribute' act (mainly Oasis, OCS, Kula Shaker covers) to a club on a caravan park on the Yorkshire 'east coast'. Arrived at the place, seemed ok, set up the gear in a pretty nifty 'theatre'. A few minutes into the sound check a sort of Red Coat turns up and says we've set up in the wrong place and we need to set up in the large bar down the other end of the building. Iritated we stagger off and set up the gear in the new place. During the [second] sound check a guy turns up with a big box full of balloons and what not and asks if it's ok to go thru our PA for his act. We consequently found out that we were backing him up for his magicians act and balloon festival of fun (sic). Not easy to play Britpop to 6-10 year olds. Our improvs of Agadoo and Wig Wam Bam saved us.........................the shame. The worst thing was it wasn't even a pick up gig.
