1. Just like a Lakland Works on mine
2. This is so beautiful, and so out of my 'pocket' at the mo. I no longer have any 70's Fenders so I'll sit in the corner and cry............sniff
3. Cheers Nick, will do, I'd go Tort or Black - just hate the white!
4. Hmmm, bit of a disappointment, I was looking to add a nice black pg from Jeannies for my DJ5
5.
I've loved the DJ's I've tried. Even though I love the Bongo would swap in a flash for a DJ
DJ4 or 5?
6. On this occassion Nick I'm really pleased that I don't own anything that I can tempt you with.
7. To continue the pedantic theme - Silicone contains silicon so in principle if the polish contains silicone it also contains silicon (just not elemental silicon).
8. I sold a MM Sterling to buy a DJ5. Would say the build quality is every bit as good as the MM. Also not a single dead spot - amazing.
9. Thought the DJ4 was a 34"? The DJ5 is deffo a 35" - my poor pinky reminds me of this every time I play it. (Also hate the white pickguard on my black sparkle DJ - it's just gotta be black!)
10. I'm sure I'd love it but the coffers are empty - all the XMas/NYE gig money has gone to student daughter for term 2 at Alcoholic City University. Maybe when I sell the DJ5 something will turn up, good luck with the sale Nick
11. Dammit Nick - why couldn't you have sold this before I bought the DJ5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - seriously thinking of letting this go for a 4 string version. P.S - how does it compare with the MIA P you sold me - is it worth Gassing over?
12. Only 18 last year (tho could've booked XMas Eve and NYE 10 times over) - only half as many as normal. Smoking ban has hit badly around me with a number of our old venues going T*** up.
13. Small pub about 15 minutes by car for NYE. With both me and the guitarist down with severe man flu and 2 x 45 minute plus 1hr30min (inc. bongs) it wasn't an easy night. I always look forward to the XMas season gigs but I'm always relieved when they're finished. Might have a break from NYE gig wise this year. Happy new year all...
14. Sorry Rob, I had to sort meself out quickly yesterday morning as I needed it for a gig. Good luck with the sale, cheers, Mart
15. Nicely rescued!
16. Have a look on www.warwick.de - forum. They're a friendly lot and you may find a nice 5'er if you post a want ad. I got my BO Thumb off the site last year, couple of months old and mint for well under shop price. Warwicks aren't everybody's favourite bass at the mo so you can grab a bargain. FWIW also I would go for a non-ash body standard 'vette they don't hold value too well (maybe excepting a $$) - I found this out last year when I was trading up to the Thumb! IMHO I think the bubinga or ovangkol bodied versions have a tighter sound and the body stands up to wear and tear better. Good luck
17. Went for the Thumb meself. I had a Corvette and really liked it but got fed up of the singer in the band making fun of the upper 'phallus'.
18. OTPJ, A friend as one very similar to the first photograph but in a natural (waxed?) finish like a Warwick. Sounds ok - a little thin, would benefit from pup upgrade but I thought worth the money. Personally tho cash wise I'd probably go with something Squier at the mo - like the Pete Wentz you posted.
19. Hey Rob, if you still have this I might be interested - also not much of a travel (fellow Rotherhamite!).
20. The JJ MEC set in my Thumb BO4 sound just fine to me, sufficiently different to the sound of my Fender P and Lakland. If I hadn't liked the sound of the MEC's I wouldn't have bought it. They can be a bit clean and dry (until you dig in) but I find them less dry in the Thumb than in my old ash bodied Corvette. IMHO they suit the bass well, can't think of a reason why I would change 'em. You might also want to think about the amp? Through my TE I'm happy - but I couldn't get a sound I liked through the house Ashdown MAG300 the other week. Regarding the Jazz thing - Outtoplayjazz might be able to help you there....he uses a Vette $$, don't know if he uses it for jazz though. Don't play jazz me'self, but strangely enough I think my DJ5 would cover this best out of my 3.
21.
Im pretty sure the neck is lacquered, it feels smooth not grainy.
My old 1990 'Ray had a satin laquered neck. I think the oil finished neck came in quite a bit later.
22. Do Schaller still make leads? The one's with the lifetime guarantee. If so, the one I have was bought back in 1988 and has been used on upwards of 500+ gigs (and probably as many practices) without a crackle and is still going strong despite winding it up like a fool and throwing it into the bottom of my gear bag.
23. That red tort would look real nice on my black sparkle DJ. Must get rid of the standard white guard, was going to get a black one - this may have changed my mind.
24.
So yeah, I'll have the Fender requirements all wrapped up! I'm after a modern sounding bass, thought the Ray would be it, but no. If only Rickenbacker did 5 stringers eh!
Umm, sounds like you need to try a few basses out regarding your modern sound. Of my 3, not surprisingly my MIA P is the most 'old school'. The Lakky, with Aero Pups is also pretty old fashioned to my ears. The most modern sounding is the Thumb - can sound very clean with MEC's until you dig in. I thought my old Sterling was pretty modern sounding - this sohould have been very similar to your 'Ray5? If you're looking for modern/clean I think it's hard to beat a Status, though some would say that sound is now very '80's.
25. Your loss You could end up with something really ugly like a Thumb...... Ah, just looked at your profile, didn't realise you were only 20. You've got to go thru another 15 years of playing before you start to enjoy Jazzes/Precisions again. Good luck with the trade. (pity the Bongo fell thru - that was sweet)
