Gotta admit the quality of the Skylines is good (if a bit clinical).

Nice Bass Rich. I also had a long 'hate' relationship with MIA Fender. Always felt they were lightweight compared with MM and a bit overpriced. However second hand they make a good deal. The S1 2004 Precision I've got is a keeper and has replaced my Thumb BO4 as my main gigging bass, mainly because it's got that old-school vibe and balances much better (doesn't compare for slap/pop tho lol).

Nick, Warwicks are different and take a bit of getting used to. I happily use my Thumb alongside the fender because it is different. The sound is more hifi and growly and so is more suited to different stuff. Having said that ive used mine for Eagles thru to Led Zep so its pretty versatile. The neck ain't for everyone but its not as bad as many make out. In short have a try it doesn't hurt to look.

I had a guy spit out his dummy at a jam night when I asked him to remove his belt when he asked to borrow my (then) brand new Sterling. I don't like dingage but I prefer it if it's my fault.

Not sure if many things sound like a Warwick, I hate the neck ache that my Thumb BO4 gives me on a long gig and the occassional hand cramp on fast passages but I love the sound. Of all the jazzes I've played I think the Lakkie DJ5 I currently have gets closest to the Warwick growl on a passive finger style. If you're prepared to go active then IMHO it's the Sterling you want sir

Pick up a 2005-7 S1 Precision and save yourself a couple hundred £ - IMHO the new standards don't look like such a leap forward, if you want something P like and better get a Glaub :ph34r: . The S1 ain't as bad as all that - if it bothers you that much just change the pot, or like I do leave it switched out. Just because it's there it doesn't mean you have to use it.

Regarding the flats, on my old, now departed fretless, the Fender flats it came with had hideous tension - especially the E, made me concerned that it could do some damage. Changed to standard rotosound flats (not the best but ok) - the tension was much closer to a set of standard rounds.

Hard to compare MIA P and J, different sound and different feel (neck). FWIW I get on well with my MIA P despite the S1 switch (just switch it out!), gets that nice thuddy 70's sound that you just can't get with a Jazz. Quality wise I'd say it's on a par with the Lakky Skylines but maybe not quite as 'robust' as a MM 'ray. I've had a couple of standard MIM's - both Jazzes - IMHO they didn't feel or play as well.

The finish on my DJ5 neck is definately satin laquer - not that much different to my 2004 MIA Precision - guess a bit lighter on the %gloss. It's definitely not an oil finish like a MM, it's closer to the original finish of a 1990 'Ray I had (before endless playing made it glossy).

I think that's the problem with GAS and multi-bass ownership. I bought a MIA P bass off Old Horse. I was looking for a beater for open mic nights. When it turned up it was too pristine to use. I just picked up a DJ5 with the same intention - again when I picked it up it was flawless (new - still boxed). I now have 3 basses all near mint - not one I would let an oik with a 7 inch belt buckle use for fun. Sad.................now where's that Squier Affinity. Problem is, with GAS, you always have a mind for the bass condition, you know if you wan't to trade/sell for your next passion that every ding/scratch (unless it's a desireable vintage) costs about £50.

I thought that the bolt-on's were stock necks. The neck on my Thumb BO4 is exactly the same as the Corvette BO4 that it replaced. I don't have a problem with the profile - sort of Jazzish at the nut but a bit thicker front to back. Never quite understood the 'baseball' bat comparison it's pretty comfortable IMHO. Life would be a bit dull if every bass had to have a Fender Jazz neck.

Can't go wrong with a Lakland Skyline. Careful with the '5's tho, finding my move to 5's from a lifetime of 4's a struggle because of the 35" and broadneck - but opinions will obviously differ. A nice JO4 or DJ4 would suit you sir.
