I think it’s only the Ray specials that are lightweight? Not sure how lightweight they are now with the swamp ash shortage? I’m definitely on the lookout for an early, light, charcoal sparkle special 4H

I can understand that, I like the lack of taper on my 4003, just wish it wasn’t so chunky at the headstock end....that’s where the Sterling excels

The body might be smaller and more ergonomic but making the bridge out of Osmium probably wasn't the best idea...

I think some of the Poplar solid colours often hit the higher figure. My Ash PDN Ray is closer to 10 than 9.5.

Looks genuine to me, as said above, it looks like you got lucky and got a light one. All but one of the Stingrays I've had have been above 9lb bar an early 2000s Fretless I once had, (like yours in a trans finish) which was about 8.5lbs. I'd hang on to that one if I were you.

I know what you mean Dan, I keep looking at a Status but I don’t want to let any of the current stock go (yes, even the rick....). With gigs being cancelled as quickly as they are being booked (they’ve just cancelled the Farmyard rally in Helmsley on the 25th weekend that we were really looking forward to due to the covid spike) I can’t see any gas fundage for some time yet.

There’s not many basses I regret parting with but the 30th I sold you was one of em. I was going through a Fender Jazz phase....ironically no Jazzes anymore but I still have a couple of MMs. I think the 30th just edges out my Starry Night though but I prefer the ebony board on the SN.

Had a Limelight custom build a few years back, 63 Jazz in black/tort. Requested medium relic and for it to be sub 9lb. I think this was at the early stages of the Limelight operation and unfortunately it came in about 10lbs and heavy relic. I was given a discount for the wrong relic, which was fine as I wasn't that bothered but eventually ended up selling in less than a year due to weight. I'd love a Shuker at some point but it would have to be an off the shelf that I could play first.

Ditto, I've tried many times over the years to use a Precision live but for whatever reason it just disappears into the onstage mix on me. This has got worse with encroaching deafness but a Stingray gives me the cut I need. Ironically I don't have a problem using Mustangs?

I think that Rob G has made a few special commissions with wood board on a graphite neck but can’t remember if they were early incarnations of the resin/paper composite.

So after 5+ months of inactivity there is some light at the end of the tunnel; in quick succession 'Glam Fever' got called back into the fray with 3 gigs..... Saturday 29th August - NHS benefit gig, outdoors with social distancing (Multi-band line up over 2 days). Friday 25th September - 'Farmyard' Bikers Rally at Helmsley, North Yorkshire, so pleased that this one has got the go ahead as it's a great event. Saturday 31st October - WMC in Royston, the first indoor gig we will have done since 7th March albeit it will be limited audience and observing social distancing rules. Now hopefully I can remember the songs.....

As a lifelong Rotherhamite I can confirm that nothing is worth coming to Rotherham for.

I've had a fair few Rays and 3 Sterlings and I was only adversely affected with the weak G on one of the Sterlings. That said it was in a live situation and a comment from an audience member and EBMM owner who think was looking for it. Can't say I'd noticed it when playing and listening through the back line. Changed the strings to status half-rounds and never had a comment again.

Very nice, had the US Sub Sterling version a few years back which was active with the Alnico pup in series. Ended up selling when I came across a US full fat version with the ceramic pup (which I wanted as it offered a different flavour to my Ray). Only issue I had with mine was the black paint on the neck which had gone sticky - had the neck refinished to cure it.

Oh that’s a bit special. None more yellow!

I think you'd be missing a trick if you didn't at least try out a Status, I'm sure there's a BC'er near you that would help you out. Status has a diverse range of basses and I guess the Streamline is the one that polarises opinion most. Having owned one I also know that Rob Green is more than helpful if there are any issues, even on older 2nd hand basses to the point of offering full refurb services, which would be more problematic on basses where the manufacturer is no longer in business.

I had a Streamline for about 10 years....only traded it because a Starry Night Stingray came up which I couldn’t resist. Regarding the fretboard; no delamination on mine but some discolouration (greying) which I’ve seen before on Status necks, just a cosmetic thing, which could be lessened by cleaning with WD40. No cracking at all on the body, but there was a little around some of the frets on the side of the fretboard, it was very minor and never got any worse in 10 years. Truss Rod; I set the action when I got it, lowest action on any bass I’ve ever had and never had to touch it again. Soundwise, mine was warmer than I expected it to be and the 2 band eq wasn’t excessive (mine was an early one - number 6), never had a problem finding a usable sound. I will get another at some point should the opportunity arise but at £2k and no gigs, it’ll be a while.
