Michael Jackson covers- Yes or No?
martthebass replied to redbandit599's topic in General Discussion
Always a tricky one this. Being in a glam rock act we made a decision early on that absolutely no Gary Glitter was included in the sets. Last year we were considering brining in some Glitter Band numbers, due to the association with GG we put the question to our followers on our FB site. The vote was almost 50 50 for yes no, so, with a heavy heart (like Brexit) we decided no to add any GG numbers in for fear of upsetting any members of the crowd. I can see this sort of thing getting increasingly difficult as more and more allegations (many posthumous) get dragged up. -

I agree with Shambo on this. I've got a MII and MIJ Mustangs. I can't deny that the build quality on the MIJ edges the MII in terms of fit, feel and finish but the MII feels the better player to me.

The My NY121's have a piezo rather than a horn. A lot don't like the sound of it, however, unlike the combo you can dial it down to nothing should you so choose. I've never found the need for it.

Sorry to hear this Blue. You've got the best attitude though, looking back on the good time you've had. I decided when I took on the bassist job with my current band that, when this band comes to an end that'll be the end of semi-pro gigging for me. Hopefully it'll be a while but I'm building up a nice portfolio of memories. All the best buddy.

Another shout out for the Smooth Hound unit. I've had the back panel issue that seems to be common but a quick email saw one come through the post immediately - I'm just more careful now when changing batteries. I've had one unexplained drop out at a gig but the Guitarist (on a Samsung unit) had exactly the same problem at the same time that rendered us unable to go wireless for the entire gig. We're concluding it was something beyond the laws of physics pertaining to that venue as we'd had no problems before or since.

I'm going to regret this, but, erm...what is meant by "Heft"...?
martthebass replied to lou24d53's topic in Amps and Cabs
I have no idea what it means, pretty much like the 70s when I used to read HiFi mags and they described a particular system as sounding, boxy, nasal, lugubrious, wooly....etc. Guess I'm a simple soul, with me to paraphrase like wine, if it tastes alright it must be good. -
Very nice, as a recent convert to Mustangs for gigging purposes I can really appreciate this.

Can't comment on the Orange cab you mention as I've never tried one. On the MB side though, I found the 2x10 lacked depth, it was great in a small setting or partnering another cab (a second 2x10 or a 1x15) but for me not enough in a bigger gig setting on its own. I ended up with 2 NY121 cabs, I use one for a small acoustic jamnight type setting and 2 for a gig. Amp partners are a LM3 or a Little Marcus 500. The second 12 to my ears adds a lot of depth to the sound and I've never found it lacking right up to the point where I felt DIing into the house PA was required. Small footprint and small car baggage friendly too. I've tried BF compact cabs but for me I could never get on with the sound with MB amps - subjective judgement of course.

Similar this end - Shadowplay popped my Bass cherry.

I often get 'baby' bass if I use one at a jam night (but never at a gig for some reason). Strangely enough nobody ever refers to my Musicman basses or Rick as 'Adult' basses?

Ditto

As we say in Yorkshire, 'It'll be reet'. Have a good time! -
3 long scale and 2 shorties in my armoury. Play them all but the shorties are currently getting all of the gigs. I don’t think 95% of the audience notice whether I’m playing a baby bass or not. Enjoy.

Short scales up to around £1000 - what's out there?

If the split pup is anything like the SD in the Jap reissue (2002 ish) then I can't see why it would be needed, I've never felt the need on mine. If you want the PJ format in a SS then the Mexican version or a Squier Jag should do the job. -

I know that they've had to change the classic bridge design to accommodate the jazz pup but it just doesn't look right on a Mustang. -
That's even worse if you're even forgetting how many you've got. Even 'our lass' doesn't do that, I know, I've tried!

Or the organiser was an asshat.

My 2010 does - don't think they've changed since. Someone will correct me if I'm talking crud.

Private party on Saturday night, not often we do this but it was local and the punter had seen us on the book of face and thought we'd be ideal etc..... A small village hall type place but, even with the DJ there was sufficient room and utilities to see us all happy. Nice leisurely sound check until we come to checking vox - mine dead as a dead thing. Fortunately traced to a duff lead so not too bad. Sound check finished and into the back room to get changed, suit bag zip bust and ended up cutting my way in to get to my sparkly Glam gear grrrrrrrr. At this stage thinking, well that's 2 where's number 3? First spot goes without a hitch so I assume the laws of bad luck have taken the night off. Come to the second spot and the Guitarists wireless pack dies before the start of the first number......I grin and think the gremlin has passed me by and moved to him. Halfway through the same number my wireless pack dies; battery fine, receiving fine, no interference just no noise! Bugger, manage to struggle with a 2ft patch lead for the rest of that and the next number before being able to dash off stage for another lead. Fortunately despite all this the audience was good natured and had a blast - well at least no one commented at the end of the gig and we even got a bonus. Hope this coming Saturday is less technically compromised.

I've played and owned MMs from all eras, can't really say that any era stood out as best. The pre-EBs were differently voiced in my estimation, as I started off on a 1990 one I just found the Pre EB different, not better though others opinions vary. One of the best I played was a 30th anniversary, lovely smooth sound and impeccable build quality. My current Starry Night PDN 2016 comes pretty close though and I prefer the ebony board. So in brief, my opinion, as voiced by some above, is that there isn't a golden era but there are great, good and mediocre examples from each decade.

That's just obsessive that is lol

Not my favourite Rick (hated my briefly owned 4004Cii) but that is a crazy price. Don't think I'll be selling my 4003 anytime soon if that's the current situation.
