    This. Tried to get on with 5s a number of times, it was the switching that killed me every time. I had to make a decision and in the end decided I can play everything I need to on a 4 so...... I also thought part of the reason was string spacing but I have 4s where the string spacing is all over (Mustang, Rick, Stingray) and it's never bothered me.

    Another shout here for Mustangs. While I'm happy on long scale I use 2 Mustangs (a Squier Mikey way and a CIJ Fender Comp Stripe Re-issue) for gigging exclusively. Very competent basses.

    I'd agree with this Pete. The band I've been in for the last couple of years isn't a tribby per se but is heavily themed and entails theme correct dress and acting. As such the set is pretty fixed and choreographed. Despite the sets only changing slightly from gig to gig I still enjoy them and find little tweaks/variations to entertain me as a player. As you say one of the main benefits is the audience knows what they are getting so we generally don't get the 'do you play 'sex on fire' bit and when we do it's easy to brush off.

    I had the Jag SS and confirm it was a passive PJ. I've also had the 'Indonesian' Long Scale Jag which was also a PJ passive. I think the active versions were long scale and MIJ/MIM? Anyhow, the passive PJ short scale was easy to dial a good sound on, very clear and punchy, preferred it to my Mustangs in many ways but just didn't like the neck dive.

    I once 'failed' a JMB audition for playing Broken Stones 'wrong' (sorry for the 'air quotes'). I'd asked 2/3 times which version they wanted but apparently the ultimate arbiter was the drummer who would 'know what was right'. Unfortunately not having the psychic ability to determine what this was I apparently missed the mark........I was so upset.

    These days I take a fairly laid back approach to covers in cover bands. As long as the version is sufficiently accurate that the audience is entertained and gets the desired reaction then I'm happy. I've seen too many bands waste loads of time trying to achieve perfection to the point that they never get out gigging or argue incessantly over details that only a vanishingly small percentage of the crowd would notice.

    Also a sufferer - mixed anxiety and depression; it's definitely no fun. Firstly Ozzma, you're not alone and you have a good sounding board with the guys on here. Secondly, don't feel stressed to enjoy music/bass when you're in the trough, it'll come back when it's time and worrying about it will just make it worse. Leaving the gear in the corner for a while isn't going to hurt anybody. When the feeling comes back use music/bass playing to help in your emergence from the trough. Lastly, don't limit yourself to a very specific musical genre - play with other guys and other music but only when you're ready and on your terms. If I only played the stuff I like I would have been a much less active musician than I am. I also tend to suffer from SAD, and one of the things that helps me get through the winter is playing every weekend with the band. Hard to be down when you have to motivate yourself to dress up in 70s gear and wear makeup and a wig. all the best mate.

    I ended up in a similar ball park to UK Lefty when I was looking at the German $$ some years ago. I found the sound a bit on the dark side despite whatever I did on the EQ and I really wanted to like it. I even found the standard active Corvette to have a better range of tones and more of the signature WW growl.

    Never worked in a music shop so not sure how the retail part works. I can understand the practise if the stock in the shop is effectively 'vendor/manufacturer owned stock' and the shop is selling on and taking its cut and then paying the supplier for the goods. However if the stock is purchased and re-sold I would've thought they can apply a price at their preferred margin level and display accordingly. This would then only require adjustment it the shop decides to change the margin or if other external tax changes come into play.

    Up for sale is my trusty Ibanez Promethean P5110 amp head. This has been the back up amp to my MarkBass LM3 for the last couple of years - it’s only been used once and that was because the LM3 was in fo a service! I have however also used it for 2 rehearsals during this time just to check that it’s as good has the bass community at large says it is.......and it is a very nice and keeps up well with the LM3 for significantly less cash. However I’ve just picked up a nice brand new MB Little Marcus and have decided to put my LM3 into the back up position so this little beauty is now available to go to a new owner. It’s in the same immaculate condition that I received it in, not a mark on it, the carry case is equally immaculate. I got a good deal on this from the forum so am happy to pass it on for a good price of £150 collected or £170 posted.     Very nice of you to say Nicola. I’m happy that you managed to find one local to you to try. Interesting your comments on the rosewood board, I generally prefer this to maple but on this particular model (and particularly in this colour) I think the maple suits better.
