Bands you think were better before they got big
martthebass replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
Agree with you there BRX, the sound was excellent, I bought the album the day after the gig (HMV New Street - now that brings back memories) and was amazed how close they got to the record. -

Wow I'd completely forgotten about them. Still have that on vinyl somewhere. Saw them at Birmingham Uni 'High Hall' in 1982(?) - with Annie Nightingale as MC/DJ. Pretty sure they mimed most of the gig though...... -

Agree with all your changes but I’d hang fire on the bridge until you’ve got a few miles under the belt. I’d intended to make this change but after a few gigs with no issues with the standard I decided to keep it stock. Be aware that if it’s a new purchase and you remove the bridge you might have some warranty issues - it’s not unknown to have paint separation in this area.

An important one this. Personally I prefer the 3eq on a fretted 4H and 2eq on a fretless 4H.

Once, and fairly recently. Amp went intermittent on a gig in the second spot couldn't really do a changeover (due to the nature of our set). Fortunately things settled down and I was able to carry on. Used the back up amp for the following two gigs while the LM3 was in the shop. Ironically it turned out the problem was a dodgy speakon cable - a maplins special. Lesson learned. A couple of years back we supported a 'named' band and the 'name' wasn't for sharing gear (or being helpful on stage space usage). I asked their bassist if he would like to double up on the bass rig (our respective rigs weren't too dissimilar - me on MarkBass him on Aguilar). I got a 'sniffy' down the nose 'no' in response. I had to smirk when his Tone Hammer went up in smoke half way through his first set and he had to delay proceedings while he hastily changed amps.

Chalk and Cheese Cuzzie - easy justification for owning both.

Not had this very long at all but we just aren’t getting enough time together. This is an absolutely mint, pristine, as new 2018 MusicMan Caprice Bass in diamond blue. Only just taken the plastic off the scratch plate so even that is mark free. This is a passive bass with p and j position humbuckers. The passive sound is very flexible and it’s easy to find a good sound in the mix - however I haven’t had the chance to get this honed down has its only been used in a couple of rehearsals at the studio. I’ve reduced the bass to a very reasonable £1150, I have a dealer offer at this level so this is as low as it goes. Apologies on the pooh quality of the iPad piccies, unfortunately no natural light in the frozen North at this time of year. I’d prefer a meet up as I don’t trust the post around the silly season, but will entertain travelling up to a radius of around 50miles around Sheffield. Unfortunately UK sale only.... Edit, forgot to mention, these are very lightweight for a MM, this one comes in around 8lbs on my digital scales.

I'm a bugger for selling basses and forgetting to swap Schaller buttons out...........cost me a small fortune, well about £100 over the last couple of years.
-
There's one on ebay for $150 BIN ebay.com/rickysucker

I don't disagree with you on the pricing point though. There's been a number of comments on the TB site regarding price hikes. The price hikes on the Caprice and Cutless in particular have drawn attention and comment made that the $500 hike earlier this year effectively caused the demise of these two models.

The Mikey Way is my bass of choice on most gigs these days, very thumpy, not as distinct as say a Stingray but works well in the mix for what I do. Tha CIJ, split pup Mustang is more distinct and flexible but for some reason I still prefer the cheaper MW on a gig. They don’t come up often, I ended up paying way above the original 2012 price when one came up, so if you see one at a good price, snap it up.
-
Don’t disagree but needs to be Tina Weymouth comp stripe lol.
-
I also don't see the point in this. A good split pickup CIJ Mustang reissue can still be had for south of £700 (even with the comp stripe) and will knock spots off one of these.

2019 Gear Abstinence Challenge (Updated with 'rules')
martthebass replied to Sibob's topic in General Discussion
I really intended to cut gear buys/swaps to a minimum this year (other than consumables) but I wasn't entirely successful. In: MIA Fender Precision, CIJ Fender Mustang, MM Caprice Bass, Out: MII Jaguar SS, MIA Precision, MIA MM Sub Sterling, MM Stingray Fretless On the positive side (?) the bass headcount has reduced from 6 to 5. I'd like to say that the line up is now stable but I'd just be kidding myself. Onwards and upwards! -
Nothing I hate more than playing those cliquey pubs where the audience is half full of other musicians looking for fault. Fortunately the band I'm in now is Fun/Party style and doesn't attract that clientele.
-
You’re totally wrong, wronger than the wrongest wrong thing. I won’t justify why, you just are. Will that do?
-
Sorry but I've never found a decent opportunity/position in a band using JMB, Party Sounds and the like. Word of mouth, getting out there has always been the best route for myself.

Not sure if it makes a difference if you are body through stringing or not Nathan - both of mine are strung through the body?
-
Both of mine have lower string tensions than my long scales - took me a while to get used to them. Not sure what are on the Mikey Way - (D'addarios?) but its hybrid slinkys on the CIJ reissue. Pretty sure they are 40 - 100s in each case.
-
You're welcome to come and try it Pete - see if it suits
-
Hi Pete, the Ray Starry Night is 9lb 8 by my digital scales and the Caprice is dead on 8lb.
-
So I understand. A bit too left field for Fender and Musicman officionados. I went for the Caprice because I was looking for something ‘smoother’ than the Ray or Sterling but I’ve never been overly keen on Jazzes. The nice light weight was also a bonus.
