  1. However, how certain can you be that the only difference between the 2 basses was the wood used on the board? Did the pups have exactly the same number of winding, was the Cu purity exactly the same, were the strings the same, had the woods in the rest of the constructions been seasoned exactly the same and for the same period of time? Lots of variables and potentially lots of unknowns. As people frequently state on here, wood is a natural product and cannot be definitively specified in terms of it's physical, chemical and thermal properties. Comparing anecdotes, I once did a 'shoot out' with a friend with nominally identical 3eq maple necked EB Stingray 4Hs (both on hybrid slinkies and both basses were early 2000s) and they sounded chalk and cheese on the same eq and amp settings. Do I have an answer why?.........no.
  2. Must be something to do with being of certain age.....also joined a (very busy) Glam Rock band at the late summer age of 54. Never had so much fun....the wigs can get a bit itchy though.
  3. Neck wise, my 01 and 16 Rays are chalk and cheese. The 01 is a very slim profile - the 16 is much chunkier.
  4. Ditch the wife....re-instate the cabs/amp. Simples
  5. Nice to see you made the effort mate Don't get me wrong, the 4003 ain't my favourite bass (that accolade belongs to my sadly departed Status Streamline - must get another one at some point) I just think it's more quirky than crap.
  6. I've got a 2010 midnight blue one with no bleed - do I win a prize? I agree that there are probably good and bad ones (anybody remember the famous 'peeling' paint incident?) but they aren't all like this. Mine doesn't get that much use (my MMs and Mustang get most of my gig work as the Ric feels big to me in the usual confined spaces I get to work in) but it's a perfectly gigable bass with a good sound. I know that you'll never be convinced that Rics can be ok (albeit verrrry overpriced now) but if we were all the same the world would be very tedious.
  7. I can see your point Cato. Having said that, my current fretted Ray is a Starry Night version which shares a lot of DNA with the 'new' Ray (sparkle finish, roasted maple, ebony board) but I'd appreciate it even more if it was 8.5lbs.
  8. Does this mean that a classic will become a classic classic and the current Ray will end up being reissued as a new classic.......
  9. Generally I'd only advocate spending on doing the bass up if you especially like it and want to keep on using it. As Bigwan says, you're unlikely to recoup the outlay if you decide to sell later. Why not keep the bass as a back-up and buy another of what you fancy.....you can never have enough basses! You could do much worse than the Sterling SUB, it'll offer a different tone pallet to a Jazz
  10. Yup just seen a ruby one in Electromusic at that. Some 'haggle' room but I suspect not more than 10%. I've had a midnight blue one sat under the bed for the last 5 years - it's currently doing considerably better than my ISA and not much worse than my pension fund.....
  11. I could be wrong KC but I believe the pup is wired in series and is an Alnico job as opposed to the Ceramic in a regular Sterling. It definitely sounds different to the 3 band Alnico Stingray (2016 Starry Night Ltd) that has replaced it. On the flip side it doesn't sound anywhere near as aggressive as the full fat US 2002 Sterling I owned some time back - that was a real sizzler. I have it strung with Status Half Rounds which are a bit smoother though which is probably a factor.
  12. 2 basses in gig bags, 2 heads in 'brand' carry bags, 2 cabs in soft sleeves and a suit bag. The leads, mics, wireless goes in a Gig Skinz bag - I'm looking for a replacement for one of these as it's getting a bit tired but haven't seen anything suitable so far.
  13. Also enjoyed it, reminded me of my time in a Britpop band back in the mid nineties. Never bought in to all the 'personanlity' aspect of the Gallaghers but you can't argue with the determination and Noel's work ethic.
  14. No.....still haven't input it since the site changeover. South Yorkshire, Sheffieldish.......sorry nowhere near E. Herts.
  15. Know what you mean GST, if I can hold the course it’ll be the Omega, if I can see financial pressures (eg. ‘We could do with a new bed’ Mrs MTB) then it’ll be the Breitling....but still an auto.
  16. I can always find another bass/amp/cab that I ‘have to have’, but this year when I reach the c.£2.5k figure in the band pot it’s going on a Omega Seamaster or a Breitling Superocean....promised myself one years ago and never got around to it.
  17. Up for viewing is a 2005 MM US made SUB. This is the much rarer Sterling variant in the equally rare cinnamon sparkle ‘artex’ like colour scheme which sort of flips between dark crimson and dark green. The bass is active 3 band (the only US Sub that was IIRC) but doesn’t have the coil switching like the full fat Sterling. The neck profile is like the Sterling however, Jazz profile and very fast. The body is slab but due to the smaller proportions the bass is a nice weight at 9lb dead on. When I first got the bass the Matt black painted neck was sticky and the top coat starting to peel so I had it professionally stripped by a Sheffield luthier and sprayed up with a thin gloss with a slight tint. To maintain the headstock look this was kept black and lightly sprayed over. The serial of the bass was carefully kept in situ on the back of the headstock. The black paint has left a few tiny flecks which can be seen under the lacquer in odd places but I didn’t want the already slim neck over sanded. The original drain grate pickguard has been replaced by a nice pearl number. The condition of the Bass is pretty good considering it’s done a hundred or so gigs with me alone, there are some cosmetic dings but nothing too horrendous. In terms of trades, not really, unless you have a nice Fender Mustang bass preferably a competition stripe model in great condition. No hard case but would be securely packaged for a buyer arranged courier. Alternatively you could meet me somewhere in sunny South Yorkshire (or at one of my gigs over the coming weeks in the Selby, Leeds area) or even at MTB towers which would include complimentary Yorkshire tea and a Ginger Nut.
  18. Very, very nice. I never did get to scratch my 80's Aria SB itch.
  19. Same as you D, Gold doesn't look right to me. For some reason I always think black hardware looks 'cheap' also despite me having a preference for black basses....
  20. That looks pretty good NJ. Does the stain stay put well when dried, no chance of sticking to moist fingers?
  21. I'm with some of the guys above, I'd sell the 4Ohm 2x10 and get a couple of 8's. I use 2 8Ohm MarkBass NY121's with my LM3 - it gives nice depth and extension (I set the piezos at zero output). A nice compact set up with 1 cab for rehearsals also.
  22. Normal austenitic stainless contains 8%Ni. To avoid completely I’d go for plastic wrapped.
  23. Another in the never buy a 5er again camp. I've had 5 or 6 and never found them comfortable or necessary for me. I'll find a good reason to have one in a couple of months and will have to berate myself yet again......
