1. After a couple of months depping in another band I was back with the 80s band for a local gig this weekend. A place we had played a number of times before with good crowd participation, this time however there must have been something in the beer because I can't remember the last time I played to such an unresponsive bunch......tumbleweed at the end of most songs even in the second set. Nights like these make me wonder why I bother :/
2. I changed over to a lightweight solution a few years back after a loooong time on heavy weight Trace Elliot stuff. I tried the 2x10 route with a LM2 but didn't get on with the sound - couldn't get the depth on stage that I was looking for. I was happy with the amp so moved the cab on for a MB151HR, this was better in the depth department but was weightier (and bulkier) than I was looking for so went to a Gen1 Barefaced Compact. This cured the depth issue but found that the cab was sensitive to the bass I was using, it could get a bit boomy with an active in some venues. Eventually I swapped the LM2 out for the LM3 and got 2 NY121 cabs. This set up has stood for the last 3 years, lovely and flexible and easy to get a good sound out of. For small acoustic type gigs a single cab works well, for bigger gigs both cabs; there really is a massive difference in sound between using one and two cabs, the sound really does open up.
3. As others have said, it tends to depend on the band I'm playing in but in terms of frequency it currently looks like this: 1. Musicman SUB USA Sterling. Indestructable finish means it can withstand the stage 'costumes' for the Glam Rock band 2. Status Streamline. A much easier bass to get to sit in the mix than the MM but doesn't look right in a 70's context. Gets used in the 80s covers band fairly exclusively 3. Rick 4003. Gets to go out an play occasionally but only at the better venues and when I know I've got more time to set my sound up 4. Musicman Ray Fretless. Occasionally taken out when we have the apporpriate numbers in the set.
4. This looks like one of the first ones with the more rounded corners and the split control for the tone, same as mine (apart from the hardware colour). Great basses GLWTS
5.
If only they could just keep them from bleeding into the white binding
Or falling off the woodwork (allegedly).
6. Even R*********R have more colours.
7. For me it was Mick Karn, just really looked (and sounded) the part...
8. I agree H this is a very low price, I've always wanted one of these (even more than the 30th I sold to you), however I'll have to consider letting one of the herd go before getting any ideas!
9. Very nice Mike, been looking to try one of these for a while....unfortunately too many basses and not enough cash in the MTB household
10.
Phew - I'm not going totally bonkers, then!
Last time I looked my Status was filled with foam........I'll get me coat
11. I'd promised myself I was not going to buy another bass this year - you're not helping! GLWTS
12. I've found the MB carry case Velcro sticks nicely to my MB cabs stopping any walkabout. The padding in the case probably softens some vibration also?
13. I'm depping in a Glam Rock band at the minute and was expecting to use a Rick for the gigs.....after a couple rehearsals with my Sterling SUB USA it was a done deal. It's basically a 3 band Ray with the pup wired in series. The artex paint also seems to be indestructible, I'm sure the paint would be completely worn through on the back of my Rick with the Bay City Rollersesque braces by now......
14. [sup]Lovely, lovely build Andy[/sup]
15. When I [had to] play in a classic rock band I used a Status Streamline more often than not......so I'm in the 'who gives a rats....' category.
16.
The world moves on, why aren't we all at the ballroom on a sunday afternoon anymore? There will always be a few people that keep genres alive along with suitable venues in some cases but will there be bands full of fifty year old blokes playing Hey Joe forever in every town? Maybe, maybe not.
What saddens me is the number of 'young' bands that play a set full of Cream, Hendrix, Free and Bad Company........ BTW I'm a fifty something and can categorically state that I don't play Hey Joe in public you ageist git Pete ;-) The pub scene in my area has gravitated to Classic Rock acts, SKA tributes and Punk multiband nights. When I was doing Classic Rock I was on at least a gig per week. Now that I'm doing mainly 80s, I'm only doing 1 per month in the local area....
17.
Nope, still can't see it. Am I being stupid or have they changed their site?
I checked yesterday and its still available - click on the Stingray and configure the bass
18. Is the problem on stage, FOH or both? I find my 4003 can lack balls for the on stage sound unless I'm in front of the cabs and the guitarist has problems picking me out in the onstage sound. Out front the sound is fine, sits nice in the mix. I usually go middle position with both pups full on in terms of tone and vol. I'd agree with above regarding the DI, on occasion I've used the MXR M80 with the Rick, it does give some useful punch if needed.
19.
All night, which was naughty.
Left most of my gear at the venue and picked it up this morning.....very naughty.
20. Think they struggled with the UV cure paints. Anyone remember the 2010 Jetglo and midnight blue basses with the amazing falling off paint? Think I got lucky with my 2010 4003 midnight blue.....it still has all its paint.
21. I'd be inclined to go fully to 5s D. I've had this problem over the years, could never mix the use of 4 and 5s, I'd be playing along quite happily on a 5 then I'd have a brain dump and wonder where I was.... In the end I stuck with 4s as I only very occasionally need anything lower than an E and I'm happy to detune for the odd song. Also I love my current 4s and wouldn't want to change em.
22. Stunning mate, a YOB for me if I was reissued also. GLWTS
