1. Had one of these meself a few years back and foolishly sold it. Yes, IMHO it is the best Stingray that EB have ever made, GLWTS
2. Oh Nick mate, I'm in love....... Unfortunately I'd have to sell the unsellable plus the family jewels! GLWTS
3.
The idea of a custom build for the price is the attraction I think, but I have questioned like DarkHeart (and asked, actually) how come so many are coming back onto the marketplace, often very quickly, after such glowing feedback. I do believe from the reviews I've read and the pictures I've seen that the basses are fantastic and being the owner of a Roadworn P, I know how good these fender instruments can feel when they are 'worn-in'. Needless to say though they are 'parts' basses so options are limited- if Mark could have supplied me with vintage correct 7.25" fretboard radius and my preferred nut width I may have been tempted. As it is, I'm paying several hundred pounds more to have the exact spec I want from Bravewood, where the bass will be built entirely from scratch and local to me.
Think you answer a lot of the questions here C, if I'd had £1500 I might have gone for a Bravewood but it was more than I wanted to pay for a fashion statement/foray into relics. As it is the bass has surprised me, and a few bassist friends regarding it's playability and sound. The stock parts suit me fine so paying a lot more for more period correct stuff like the fretboard radius would have been wasted on me (my current basses are all over the place on radius/width so it doesn't really bother me). On the Numbers coming into the market place I can only think it's the normal 'emperor's new clothes' jobbie, and People buying on a whim and repenting at leisure.
4.
I bought my Limelight last July. Mark was fantastic with his service, communication and the execution of the instrument is top notch. It's done lots of gigs with me since, always gets loads of excellent comments from punters about its looks and sound and it plays better than any Fender I've ever had my hands on. I do seem to be in the rare few who haven't sold it on yet. I do not intend to willingly sell mine anytime soon!
Still got mine too Skej. Is it too reliced for my taste...a bit. Did I have a problem with the saddles, yes, but easily sorted. Why do I still have it....because it's the best sounding jazz I've ever had, and ive had a few. I'm not one for trends, (don't mention Sue Ryder though) and only got it because I couldn't find a fender RW at the time but so far I'm happy with the choice. Will I sell it...at some point I may because I'm never satisfied.
5. Like Lozz I tend to lay off the filters and pretty much find no issues with volume at the gain/master settings you describe in a loudish rock setup when running into two 12" cabs. Having said that, when needed I've never had a problem pushing the knobs clockwise without clipping.
6. I think I've got to the stage where I go quality rather than quantity of gigs. I don't care if the place is a palace or a dive, if it has a good vibe I'm happy to play it. If it's on the rough side then the Limelight J gets used though, I don't think a few more dents would harm its appearance. If I was doing this for the money then I'm sure my attitude would be different though....
7. Please hurry up and sell this G.....I'm considering selling everything in my Sig below and a kidney to get this!!! The wife would not be happy.....
8. I can understand how you feel Z. I had a MM SR5 F'less a few years back that had had a nut replacement and due to the brittleness of Pau Ferro, a lump had come out between nut and first. Not pretty but once it had been filled it never gave me a problem. If the aesthetics are of concern, then on a great bass like the Streamer it would be worth getting it sorted. You could go the whole hog and had an epoxy job like a Pedulla!
9. Not sure on my terminology with respect to 'checking'. If you mean the sort of 'thermal shock' induced laquer cracking then my Limelight doesn't have it. The paint ion my heavy relic more sort of thin nitro satin, no thickish gloss top coat to check.
10. Another 4 string Streamline owner here. With the possible exception of a Streamline 5 I can't think of anything that would ever replace it. Superb bass.
11.
I'm intrigued to what it is that put you off a MM Sterling? (of course I'm mindful that taste is subjective etc etc) The R*£K I can understand...although i played a 74 that was nice...in the shop...overpriced though
I found the MM Sterling a bit sharp with the ceramic pups Ras, the neck was nice though. It's personal preference obviously. As for the Rick...probably best not to open that can of worms. Works well in my 80s Tribby band though.
12. Don't trade for a Rick or an MM Ras, you'll regret it. Mine don't get a look in on most gigs, the LL nasty Jazz gets the....erm, limelight. GLWTS
13.
1979 to 1981 were my seminal music years, tail end of Punk, start of Goth, start of the New Romantic scene....some amazing music around that time, I stayed interested until Bros came along in 86?....that was about it for me! Echo Beach was recorded in 1979 but released in 1980...great song!
This. Post Punk, New Wave, Pop Ska, New Romantic......all within the space of 3 years. In contrast the last 10 years hardly seems to have changed to me. I am biassed tough as I'm also in an 80s band doing stuff from 80 to 84.
14. I'd love to add this to my tiny Limelight collection.....recent house move scuppers this plan though. GLWTS
15. [sub]
Sorry Naetharu, I realised I didn't reply to your question! It was the single PU model. Obviously not as flexible as a dual PU config but then again, it has a different flavour in itself with the pickup being right in the 'sweet spot'. Whether one or the other is down to personal preference. I would always choose a single H model of any Stingray type bass (bit more aggression)
[/sub] [sub]Strangely enough I had a basic KT a few years back with the dual Delano pups. It played great but there was a darkness to the sound that I could never fully dial out, almost like I had the cabs wrapped in a blanket. I eventually moved it on and got a single H Stingray.[/sub]
16.
Hiya Limlighters. Loving seeing all these new instruments coming up! Trying to get my P set up the way I like it - bit too much effort to play at the moment, not sure if it's the action or the flats it's got on. Decided to try lowering the action a bit, but am having trouble with the rusted bridge. Can't seem to move the saddle screws at all.... Anyone got any tips, or is a replacement needed?
I had a luthier friend sort mine ( it's a couple of pages back in this thread ), he couldn't unsieze the saddles. He put me some new brass saddles on which sorted the problem. I've kept the old ones but they're pretty much beyond redemption. I'll eventually put some threaded saddles back on to keep it period correct but at the minute it's a players bass so I sint too worried.
17.
Talking of 80s sequenced basslines, Tainted Love. In theory the verse riff is simple – G/G/Bb/Bb/Eb/Eb/Bb/C – but it’s very easy to make the pushed C at the end sound clumsy or inconsistent. I’ve actually taken to keeping the playing digit ‘ghosting’ the swing rhythm instead of just going for the individual notes.
I even bought an Akai Miniak to do the do the sequences but still haven't learned to program the bloody thing properly
18. Joe Jackson's it's different for Girls for me. Bassline isn't too bad (apart from me making an arse of the improv coda) but as soon as I start singing the backing vocal I fall apart. Also 80s stuff where I'm having to duplicate a sequenced bassline (e.g. Ultravox - All stood Still, where I lose the will to live after about 3 minutes...)
19. I guess with me, laziness and familiarity tends to push me to my Limelight Jazz most of the time. It looks sufficiently crusty that im not worried about leaving it out if it's box around the house and I'm happy with anyone using it at a jam night - the main reasons I bought it I suppose.
20.
I think for the look of the thing I probably would have replaced this bridge with an identical bridge that had threaded saddles - possibly even a new one - having 'aged' it somewhat beforehand, but not so much that it couldn't be adjusted. Though it's better to have function over form, obviously.
The originals have been kept and I can always retrofit with some threaded saddles if required. But at the moment this is a gigging bass and needs must. Also ended up changing the pup screws and inserting new foam so that the pup height could be sorted; the height of the bridge pup was unadjustable and needed raising to balance the outputs of the 2 pups. Happy with it now and no slur on the builder is intended - just a case of function over form.
21. Well, despite liberal application of WD40 and some level of patience, the seized bridge saddles would not free up which necessitated some action. A luthier friend of mine wanted to take a look at the relicing and installed me some nice brass saddles at the same time. Unfortunately one of the saddles couldn't be saved (in case I wanted to sell it complete at some point) - in his opinion the treatment had been applied while the saddles were assembled and he thought the screws had just rusted in the holes too badly. Never mind, no big loss, and the 'old' bird is now much more playable. A comparison of the saddles is shown in the pic.
22. Lovely little cab. I turn the tweeters off on both of mine....works for me.
