1979 to 1981 were my seminal music years, tail end of Punk, start of Goth, start of the New Romantic scene....some amazing music around that time, I stayed interested until Bros came along in 86?....that was about it for me! Echo Beach was recorded in 1979 but released in 1980...great song!
This. Post Punk, New Wave, Pop Ska, New Romantic......all within the space of 3 years. In contrast the last 10 years hardly seems to have changed to me. I am biassed tough as I'm also in an 80s band doing stuff from 80 to 84.

Has anyone got experience with the Sandberg Basic?
martthebass replied to Naetharu's topic in Bass Guitars
[sub]
Sorry Naetharu, I realised I didn't reply to your question! It was the single PU model. Obviously not as flexible as a dual PU config but then again, it has a different flavour in itself with the pickup being right in the 'sweet spot'. Whether one or the other is down to personal preference. I would always choose a single H model of any Stingray type bass (bit more aggression)
[/sub] [sub]Strangely enough I had a basic KT a few years back with the dual Delano pups. It played great but there was a darkness to the sound that I could never fully dial out, almost like I had the cabs wrapped in a blanket. I eventually moved it on and got a single H Stingray.[/sub] -
Hiya Limlighters. Loving seeing all these new instruments coming up! Trying to get my P set up the way I like it - bit too much effort to play at the moment, not sure if it's the action or the flats it's got on. Decided to try lowering the action a bit, but am having trouble with the rusted bridge. Can't seem to move the saddle screws at all.... Anyone got any tips, or is a replacement needed?
I had a luthier friend sort mine ( it's a couple of pages back in this thread ), he couldn't unsieze the saddles. He put me some new brass saddles on which sorted the problem. I've kept the old ones but they're pretty much beyond redemption. I'll eventually put some threaded saddles back on to keep it period correct but at the minute it's a players bass so I sint too worried.
Talking of 80s sequenced basslines, Tainted Love. In theory the verse riff is simple – G/G/Bb/Bb/Eb/Eb/Bb/C – but it’s very easy to make the pushed C at the end sound clumsy or inconsistent. I’ve actually taken to keeping the playing digit ‘ghosting’ the swing rhythm instead of just going for the individual notes.
I even bought an Akai Miniak to do the do the sequences but still haven't learned to program the bloody thing properly

Joe Jackson's it's different for Girls for me. Bassline isn't too bad (apart from me making an arse of the improv coda) but as soon as I start singing the backing vocal I fall apart. Also 80s stuff where I'm having to duplicate a sequenced bassline (e.g. Ultravox - All stood Still, where I lose the will to live after about 3 minutes...)

I guess with me, laziness and familiarity tends to push me to my Limelight Jazz most of the time. It looks sufficiently crusty that im not worried about leaving it out if it's box around the house and I'm happy with anyone using it at a jam night - the main reasons I bought it I suppose.

Quite possibly the most expensive 12" driver I've seen!

Think these are the special Platinum chasis.... -
I think for the look of the thing I probably would have replaced this bridge with an identical bridge that had threaded saddles - possibly even a new one - having 'aged' it somewhat beforehand, but not so much that it couldn't be adjusted. Though it's better to have function over form, obviously.
The originals have been kept and I can always retrofit with some threaded saddles if required. But at the moment this is a gigging bass and needs must. Also ended up changing the pup screws and inserting new foam so that the pup height could be sorted; the height of the bridge pup was unadjustable and needed raising to balance the outputs of the 2 pups. Happy with it now and no slur on the builder is intended - just a case of function over form.

Well, despite liberal application of WD40 and some level of patience, the seized bridge saddles would not free up which necessitated some action. A luthier friend of mine wanted to take a look at the relicing and installed me some nice brass saddles at the same time. Unfortunately one of the saddles couldn't be saved (in case I wanted to sell it complete at some point) - in his opinion the treatment had been applied while the saddles were assembled and he thought the screws had just rusted in the holes too badly. Never mind, no big loss, and the 'old' bird is now much more playable. A comparison of the saddles is shown in the pic.

Lovely little cab. I turn the tweeters off on both of mine....works for me.

I love my heavy relic Jazz, yes I know the heavy relic can be a bit extreme but for me it's less about the looks and more about the feel. There is one but; when I first got my LL the level of tarnish on the metal work was low but one year on the pup screws and bridge saddles/springs/screws are in a pretty advanced state of corrosion to the point where I'm considering replacing them. So a couple of quick questions, has anyone else experienced this and has anyone done any swap outs (and if so what with)?

We recently sold a pair of Hysis 1s for £125 so £100-150 would be about the benchmark. They are fine as vocal cabs but we found they hit their limits fairly quickly when putting backing tracks or instruments through them. We changed to HK Audio PR:O12 s, the improvement was massive.

First full dress rehearsal with new band- PA disaster
martthebass replied to CHW's topic in General Discussion
Looking at the actives, these look more 'semi-domestic' to me, not really suited for high volume/big areas. I'd limit them to vox and play with the EQ to minimise mud. -
I use Markbass cabs and prefer them to any other mass produced ones I've tried. I really don't like Ampeg any more! To compare the two, MB will be insanely louder, and you will actually get some upper mids/treble through over the guitars and drums
I'm (unsuprisingly) with Chris here. MB cabs can get some stick but I find them a good match for my LM3 head. A pair of NY121s works very nicely up to the point where you'd be DI'ing anyway. Not sure if the 151 would be needed but I like to use matched cabs in pairs YMMV.

First full dress rehearsal with new band- PA disaster
martthebass replied to CHW's topic in General Discussion
Without any further info - the first thing I'd do, assuming you're just using a pair of tops, is put all instruments through a backline and leave the PA for vox only. We only put instruments through if we're using our active subs so they can take the LF strain and the 12" tops (800W program - but doesn't guarantee lack of 'mud' if the input is taxing) can do their thing on the higher freq programme. -
