1.
Very interesting to try and create classic synth lines on a bass...IMO I think that is a real neat little angle to explore... or go the whole hog and learn to play synth bass keys.
I've had some fun this year with my 80s covers band doing the synth bass parts on Reward, Just Can't Get Enough and All Stood Still using my Status. Have to think though because I can start to drift off mid song and before you know it I've come unstuck. Next ones in the pipeline are Rip It Up (judicious use of env filter here I think) and Let's Dance.
2. My Status Streamline. Rich (out to play jazz) convinced me a few years back that this was the only bass I'd ever need. We'll I don't know about that but it's the only bass I've ever owned that becomes part of me when I play it like some old comfy shoes. Sure it looks a bit weird but eh nothing's ever perfect.....one day I'll have to get one of them Status Stealth thingies to appease me on the aesthetic side.
3. Looks just the ticket...I suspect there aren't many around for trade though. Do they have to be ordered direct from TKS and paid for in SEK?
4. Hi D, I'd be inclined to let the wax colour the chip and pop a bit of clearcoat or clear nail varnish over the top when you get the chance.
5. Had a number of both. Problem I have always found with the Stingray is that on its own it can be hard to tame and sound crap onstage, go FOH though and it sounds great. With the P bass I find it gets lost on stage - with my weakening ears I find it hard to pluck out of a complex mix. I recently had to part with my old go to P bass for this very reason. I will add though I play exclusively finger style so that no doubt makes a big difference.....some P basses only come to life when shown the pick.
6. In Rick 4003 Squier VM77 Jazz Out US Jazz 75RI FSR Rick 4004 Cii Precision Bitsa
7. If its for a fretless Chris don't use superglue. I had a nut replaced by Jon Shuker on a Ray 5 fretless a few years back because if was having a fretboard level and skim. He had a helluva job removing the nut and he had to repair the board behind the nut as small pieces pulled away with the nut.
8.
Depends what you put them through IME. Through the small Ashdown combo at rehearsal mine sounded a bit flat but through my Hartke, with a tweak of the shape control, it sounded like the biggest 4001/4003 you ever heard, and I have the 2 best-sounding 4001s (IMO) I've ever heard to compare it against. Amazing sound, possibly the best I've had, and gutted I had to sell it because (ironically) the ergonomics didn't suit. Having said that, mine sounded a lot better than the other one I tried in the shop.
You're probably right but I couldn't get 'that' sound using a Peavey combo or (at the time) my MarkBass Rig. I could only get (for me) a sound I liked out of the bridge pup, dialling in the neck just muddied things up irrespective of what I did with the EQ. On the other hand the 4003 just seems to have more punch on the bridge or combined pups and is smoother than the 4004 on the neck pup solo'd. I did try to like it because I loved the shape and the 'modern' bridge.
9.
I like the look ( and sound, from what I have heard on YT ect) ) of the Ric 4004. I would love to have a go on one. Maybe I would find it a bit more playable that a 4001/ 4003. I just love that clanky and agressive Rickenbacker -with- roundwounds sound. Nothing else will substitute for it.
Trouble is D, the 4004 doesn't sound much like a 4003/1 unless you do some serious rewiring....
10.
At which point I loose my cool a bit and spout on about how he even has the gaul to ask me after turning up to his own gig late and not even being bothered to sort out a fresh string before hand. Finishing on telling him too look up the RRP of the status neck.
Hmmm...reminds me of the time when I guy at a multi gig asked if he could use my Status Streamline because he didn't have time to tune up (!). I politely declined as he was clearly arseholed. He went into a rant about my bass being a toy and crappy and connived a bass of a 'mate'. Half way into his first song the bass came off the strap, hit the deck and suffered serious dingage. Didn't have the heart to say anything to his mate..... Back OT, I'm generally cool with allowing use of backline as long as they're on before me AND they don't touch the knobs....they are warned that I'll nail their hands to their bass if they do!
11. Why do people keep raising these threads, the outcome is always the same. I believe that it's possible to own 2 basses, or even more, these days?
12. Love mine. The Chinese stuff doesn't sound like one....hell a 4001 doesn't sound like one. And as many have said in the past...it's the idiosyncrasies that keep you going back for more....
13. Last first... Make sure you have a good play on the G&L before you got one, the US version has a meaty neck, it sounds good but is a handful and IMHO over complicated compared to a MMRay5. the Gibbos.....I agree with Dingus. the Rick, very marmite, I have a love hate relationship with one. Looks the dogs but to many plays like a dog. However I get more compliments on the sound of my 4003 than my other basses. If only I could get my Status to sound like one....
14. A late generation 2 BF compact with Roq Solid cover. Both cab and cover are unmarked, the cab in particular looks mint and even has all 4 of its feet! I've only used it on gigs a handful of times as I normally DI through the desk and am happy with the monitor sound. When I have used it I've found it more than capable of holding its own in a fair sized venue with only 12 o clock showing on the LM3 - never really need to push it. This has the steel grill rather than the silver cloth.
15. Nothing at all wrong with the feet. I'm neither a BF fan boi or a BF basher.....it's the little faults that keep me interested. After 20 odd years of TE heaviness I can put up with a little hassle.
16. There's the rub Stevie, this was bought used and I was aware this could be an issue with these cabs. I guess I'm on the list for a reply but I don't mind being proactive and sorting it before it causes more damage. I don't see that BF have a responsibility to me as I didn't buy it from them......hopefully it's a cheap and easy fix.
17. I own a Barefaced cab and a Rick......I feel like a leper.
18. I know this is an unfortunate common problem. I've tried to source alternatives from BF but have had no reply to date. I'm concerned the cab may soon become part of my foot one of these days so could anyone give a heads up on an alternative that fits and hopefully doesn't fall apart? Cheers, Mart
19. Always wanted one of these.....unfortunately too many basses and not enough cash.
20. Superb basses....better than most of the custom shops I've tried. I let my CAR FSR 75RI go earlier this year (number 00264) for the same reason. I make do with a Squier VM77 these days.... :-(
21. US built Ray, 4 string, 2EQ......everything else sucks...... in my humble opinion of course.
22.
Can't you? They're pretty small. But then I don't know how small an A3 boot is...
Had to change from a 115HR to a Barefaced Compact cos the bloody thing wouldn't fit when I downsized from a Passat Estate. Bugger, lm one of those who loved the MB cab coupled with a MB amp.
23. I daren't hange the strings on mine for fear of screwing up the action.......
