1. I find mine pretty versatile but have to admit that I tend to gravitate towards tone full on on the the bridge pup only. It suits some of the punkier/punchy stuff I do better than my other basses. All round it isn't as versatile as my Status and reminds me of the Single pup Stingrays I've owned in that respect. Then again if I turned up at a punk gig playing my Streamline I'd expect some odd looks. I wouldnt be happy if it was my only bass but for what I use it for I couldn't think of a bass to better it. In terms of ergonomics you either love it or hate it, there are no facts in this regard, only opinions.
2. With the 'Day Job' I always indicate to a prospective buyer that the posting won't be made until the weekend.................managing expectations.
3. Don't take it personally Rich, I put a truly awesome Jazz FSR up earlier in the year at a great price without much interest. Just the way things are in this economic boom we're now having!
4. I tried one, and opted for the LM3 in the end as it suited the MB cab I was using at the time better. Ironically with the BF compact I'm now using I suspect it's brightness would be a better fit. In short make sure you consider the cab(s) as well.
5.
Currently one of those Vintage Jazz copies. Hardly high-rent, but having been playing their Jaco fretless version I find the neck superb - better in fact than than my US jazz neck. So looking to swap the Jaco for a fretted. The other thing I'd really like in my arsenal is some talent.
I succumbed to one of those VM Jazz 77s last week. That's why the new amp will have to wait!
6. I Fancy an amp swap out.....those TC Electronic RH450s look nice.
7. Shadow Play Joy Division.......I miss those old tunes
8. Necks are standard Fender. I replaced mine on my old Affinity P with a Fender Licensed Mighty Might with no mods. Scratch plate on the P isn't standard - Howard (BassDoc) has the template to make though.
9. +1 on the Wilkies. I had a set on my 70's Frankenfender. Worked just as well as the Schallers on my other basses.
10. My Status with not a gramme of wood on it never goes out of tune, honest guv. My MM and Rick do to lesser or greater extents, the MM holds tuning for months, the Rick for weeks.
11. Just off loaded my Affinity P bass in favour of a VM Jazz 77. Chalk and cheese really. The Affinity was a decent bass to mod in fact in the end the body was all that was left of the original bass, the rest was pretty utilitarian and budget. The VM is much more grown up and finished to a much higher standard, mines got the new pickups, they aren't as good as the vintage CS ones that were in my 75 RI ( now gone) but they are more than reasonable. I Wouldn't worry too much about the body woods, the Affinity was very lightweight whereas the VM is more substantial; the VM comes in at about 9.75lbs overall about the same as most of the MM Stingrays I've had. I'm unlikely to do any mods on this bass so at £246 new not a bad deal for a decent backup.
12. Well, a brief noodle on the new vm Jazz 77 was a bit of a revelation.....a very nice piece of kit for the money. Weight more substatial than I expected - for some reason I expected it to be a bit like my old Affinity which couldnt have been more than 8lbs or so; this one's a good solid 9.5lbs. Hardware is typical far east economy standard but perfectly functional. The fit and finish is pretty good, nice tight neck pocket and the paint has fewer 'from the factory' flaws than my Rickenbacker. £240 basses have moved on a fair way IMHO......though I have to remind myself that the last time I bought a Squier 'brand new' it was a 57 reissue JV Precision for £203 back in 1982!
13. [sup]Big plus 1 from me also. Always found them really helpful.[/sup]
14. [sub]Any that is in my sig at any given time......[/sub]
15. Black vm77 ordered and incoming so hopefully it'll be setup in time for this Saturday's gig.
16.
Yep and you probably won't lose a penny on it if you get one second hand either, it is still THE five string bass IMO. My cheapest bass is my black SR5, it has the wrong neck fitted as it was a factory fretless and is a very last of the ceramic pickup models which I had previously bypassed in favour of alnico ones to be more stingray, it's my favourite bass!
I went through about 5 fivers before I conceded that they didn't work forme. Sandberg, G&L, lakland and MM SR5......the MM was easily the best. Fortunately didn't lose a penny on the SR5 when I sold it.
17. Cheers I, Looking like I'll be ordering the vm77 in black or the vm 70s in Oly white. Only difference looks to be the body wood, agathis on the vm77 and soft maple on the vm 70s. While I still have a hankering for a Jag, I havent been able to try one out so I think that gets ruled out at this stage.
18. Having just let my P bass go because it just didn't have enough cut with my LM3/Barefaced Compact set up, could anybody give me an opinion on the above 2 basses? I'm looking for one of the above as a sub for my Ric or Status at Jamnights or ahem, 'rough' establishments.
19. Another +1 for MM necks, mine also came off the bay for about £100. Very playable, no rough frets or edges. Fits like a glove on my Squier P bass.
20. Still available......a few more pics.
21. Angelagnostic....pm replied to. Gramme....sorry no idea on the radius, feels a little flatter than my Stingray. Weight wise, it's light to medium, certainly sub 9lb - significantly lighter than my mm and Ric. I'm also sensitive to weight (shoulder probs and long sets - hence the Status) and I find it pretty light.
