1. Very nice Marcus. I think only one of these or a Stealth 2 headless could move me away from my beloved Streamline.
2. Cheers Pete. Strangely enough this is my 'go to' bass as it is so comfortable to play but the lack of a HF unit in the BF Compact means I don't get enough cut on stage so I end up using a Stingray or my (cough) Rickenbacker most of the time. I used my old (now departed) 75RI Jazz on a gig at the back end of last year using the BF/LM3 rig and this sempt ok so that looks like the way to go.
3. I really love this Precision, I've used it on a fair few gigs over the last 18 months or so but since I changed my cab for a Barefaced Compact it really doesn't seem to work in some gig situations where my other more treble/active basses do. I don't want to go through another bout of rig changing so I've decided to let this go in favour of a Jazz or a double pickup bass. A bit about the bass; it started life as an Affinity P bass but the only bit that's left is the body. The neck has been changed to a Mighty Mite maple board jobbie (with 70's style Fender Logo), the guts and pots for higher quality, the bridge for a high mass, the original crappy tuners for Wilkinson 70's style and the single ply white pg for a Bass Doc 3 ply torty one. Last but not least, the original Squier pup has been replaced with a Wizard Thumper. The body has a few dings but nothing too extreme and no wood is exposed. I know that you never get back what you put in when you build a bitsa but I think £180 is a good starting point for this nice playing bass. As I said above I'm looking for a Jazz or similar and would consider a trade with some cash coming from me for the right bass.
4. Wish I had a higher quality P bass (rather than my Mighty Mite/Squier FrankenFender) to part trade with you Ozzy, this would suit me down to the ground. GLWTS
5.
Hah! I still haven't heard back but was emailing last week too. Decided to go for tweeter too, never used one before but thought it would be good to have, but not need - than need and not have!
Wish I'd gone for one with a tweeter too. I've always run 15" cabs with tweeters and being without takes a bit of getting used to. I've managed to get my MB/Barefaced set up running with 3 of my basses but I think the precision will probably have to go in favour of a Jazz at some point.
6. Gsgbass, what's the string tension like on these. I've got Rotos on mine, great sound but I find the tension a bit on the high side compared to the Slinkies on my P bass and Status hotwires on my Ray and Status.?
7. Gotta love red Ricks. If you ever grow bored of the colour and feel the need for a Blue one just give me a call!!!!
8.
They don't really sound like them either
I also found that out :-(
9. Firstly, can't do anything about the ergonomics, you either love them, hate them or learn to live with them. Soundwise, as said above I think your playing style and rig have just as much contribution. My Rick works just fine with a small scale rig, plenty of low end for rock and punk stuff. Ironically with this same rig my P bass sounds pants. If it's not for you then get rid, but if you can learn to enjoy the 'fight' when playing one, play with you rig to get that desired sound and maybe adapt your technique you might get a surprise.
10. Second time that this has come up and I don't have the cash.....arrrgh. Love the MM special editions, still miss my 30th Anni Ray - they really pay attention to detail when they make these. Sorry I can't let my crappenbacker go in trade mate but the band would sack me and I don't think my Status or fretless Ray would interest you for an 80's punk/indie/hip hop/grunge reunion combo. GLWTS - maybe I'll have the cash next time it comes up!
11.
I don't go anywhere near my ric in this type of weather, it has the stickiest finish on the back of the neck of any of the basses I own. No problem with any of the Fenders, think they are all satin finishes.
Ditto...usually, played a gig with it last weekend, it was a nightmare. Superglue city!
12. Dave, the SD drop ins should give you a decent sonic improvement, you'll not get that value back should you choose to sell but that's not the point. I'm sure it'd do justice to some old JD choons, as you say Hooky didn't use a Rick so what the hay. The only reason I have a Rick is for the sound for the 80s band I'm in......if I didn't need THAT sound I wouldnt own one, the design has too many quirks for my liking.
13.
Mine has a paint crack running from the neck pocket out. Not from a drop or ding it just happened at some point. I have read several reviews on basses around the same age (07-11ish) with the exact same problem.
Not as uncommon as you'd think. I had a G&L L2500 do this overnight and a Fender J (though that one took a week or so) at the neck pocket. Purely cosmetic but you have the hassle of explaining that it's 'just in the paint' when you come to sell....
14. Stingray Fretless Rick 4003 Status Streamline Fender P Fender J Problem is, she who must be obeyed keeps my bass count down to 4 which is why I move stuff about a bit (i.e. My P bass may need to become a J at some point)
15. TBH I think it depends on how authentic you want it to sound compared to a Rick. IIRC from my JD tribute band days I loaded it with so much effect I could have been playing a violin bass. I can't get any of my other basses to sound like my 4003 - If I could I wouldn't have bought it! But having said that I would've thought for the JD stuff you should get pretty close with your Ray - I did. If the problem is that it doesn't look like a Rick....sorry can't help yer there.
16. I do this one and I've hit the big 5 - 0. Play it and be damned.
17. Amazon sent me the wrong set! If anyone has an 8 string set with bullet end for swap I'd appreciate it - otherwise £5 all in for a J62 set of 80/20 bronze wound 8 string set.
18. After reading back through a number of the comments I decided to have a couple of hours playing around with the LM3/Compact in a decent sized hall. Still not getting all that I'd like with the P bass but applying a mid scoop to the EQ brought this small rig to life with the Status which is a positive. Looks like I'll be keeping hold for a bit longer.........second chance and all that.
19. Oooh, one that's local to me. Just what I'm looking for, need to sell my P bass first though.
20. Not too bad this end Nick. I'm trying to avoid selling stuff mate, the market's so flat. Last few deals I've done on here have been trades. Even though the levy to sell on BC is small it's sufficient to make me think twice before sticking stuff up for sale!
21.
That is very perceptive of you , because in my experience , the necks on both pre and post EB Stingrays are not that stable , probably because they are so slim and have no extra stiffening features . Maybe the reason EBMM have moved towards a fatter neck profile is to try and combat the tendency of these necks to shift with the slightest change in the weather . The oil finish doesn't help with that , either . Very sensitive to heat and humidity .
Yup 'Jane Hill's Stalker'. The gloss finished neck on my old 30th Anni didn't need adjusting in the 2 years that I had it. I think some of the oil finished are better than others though, I had a 2006 that was always changing shape.......the 2001 Fretless has been ok though no movement in 18 months.
22. Can't believe this is still here Nick........unfortunately my Status is a streamline not an S2.
23.
The neck profiles are chalk and cheese.
I'm never sure how much of the profile is 'standardised' on EBBM or preeb. I regularly play (not mine) a preeb at a local Jamnight, the neck profile is chunky and not really to my tastes (doesn't feel far off a 57 precision RI in my girly hands). My 1990 Ray had a slimmer profile but still more substantial than a standard modern US P bass. I've had a few 2000's Rays, my current 2001 Fretless has a very slim neck and seems inbetween my old 1990 and a Sterling in terms of width at the nut.
