1. Just off loaded my Affinity P bass in favour of a VM Jazz 77. Chalk and cheese really. The Affinity was a decent bass to mod in fact in the end the body was all that was left of the original bass, the rest was pretty utilitarian and budget. The VM is much more grown up and finished to a much higher standard, mines got the new pickups, they aren't as good as the vintage CS ones that were in my 75 RI ( now gone) but they are more than reasonable. I Wouldn't worry too much about the body woods, the Affinity was very lightweight whereas the VM is more substantial; the VM comes in at about 9.75lbs overall about the same as most of the MM Stingrays I've had. I'm unlikely to do any mods on this bass so at £246 new not a bad deal for a decent backup.
2. Well, a brief noodle on the new vm Jazz 77 was a bit of a revelation.....a very nice piece of kit for the money. Weight more substatial than I expected - for some reason I expected it to be a bit like my old Affinity which couldnt have been more than 8lbs or so; this one's a good solid 9.5lbs. Hardware is typical far east economy standard but perfectly functional. The fit and finish is pretty good, nice tight neck pocket and the paint has fewer 'from the factory' flaws than my Rickenbacker. £240 basses have moved on a fair way IMHO......though I have to remind myself that the last time I bought a Squier 'brand new' it was a 57 reissue JV Precision for £203 back in 1982!
3. [sup]Big plus 1 from me also. Always found them really helpful.[/sup]
4. [sub]Any that is in my sig at any given time......[/sub]
5. Black vm77 ordered and incoming so hopefully it'll be setup in time for this Saturday's gig.
6.
Yep and you probably won't lose a penny on it if you get one second hand either, it is still THE five string bass IMO. My cheapest bass is my black SR5, it has the wrong neck fitted as it was a factory fretless and is a very last of the ceramic pickup models which I had previously bypassed in favour of alnico ones to be more stingray, it's my favourite bass!
I went through about 5 fivers before I conceded that they didn't work forme. Sandberg, G&L, lakland and MM SR5......the MM was easily the best. Fortunately didn't lose a penny on the SR5 when I sold it.
7. Cheers I, Looking like I'll be ordering the vm77 in black or the vm 70s in Oly white. Only difference looks to be the body wood, agathis on the vm77 and soft maple on the vm 70s. While I still have a hankering for a Jag, I havent been able to try one out so I think that gets ruled out at this stage.
8. Having just let my P bass go because it just didn't have enough cut with my LM3/Barefaced Compact set up, could anybody give me an opinion on the above 2 basses? I'm looking for one of the above as a sub for my Ric or Status at Jamnights or ahem, 'rough' establishments.
9. Another +1 for MM necks, mine also came off the bay for about £100. Very playable, no rough frets or edges. Fits like a glove on my Squier P bass.

11. Still available......a few more pics.
12. Angelagnostic....pm replied to. Gramme....sorry no idea on the radius, feels a little flatter than my Stingray. Weight wise, it's light to medium, certainly sub 9lb - significantly lighter than my mm and Ric. I'm also sensitive to weight (shoulder probs and long sets - hence the Status) and I find it pretty light.
13. And replied
14. Very nice Marcus. I think only one of these or a Stealth 2 headless could move me away from my beloved Streamline.
15. Cheers Pete. Strangely enough this is my 'go to' bass as it is so comfortable to play but the lack of a HF unit in the BF Compact means I don't get enough cut on stage so I end up using a Stingray or my (cough) Rickenbacker most of the time. I used my old (now departed) 75RI Jazz on a gig at the back end of last year using the BF/LM3 rig and this sempt ok so that looks like the way to go.
16. I really love this Precision, I've used it on a fair few gigs over the last 18 months or so but since I changed my cab for a Barefaced Compact it really doesn't seem to work in some gig situations where my other more treble/active basses do. I don't want to go through another bout of rig changing so I've decided to let this go in favour of a Jazz or a double pickup bass. A bit about the bass; it started life as an Affinity P bass but the only bit that's left is the body. The neck has been changed to a Mighty Mite maple board jobbie (with 70's style Fender Logo), the guts and pots for higher quality, the bridge for a high mass, the original crappy tuners for Wilkinson 70's style and the single ply white pg for a Bass Doc 3 ply torty one. Last but not least, the original Squier pup has been replaced with a Wizard Thumper. The body has a few dings but nothing too extreme and no wood is exposed. I know that you never get back what you put in when you build a bitsa but I think £180 is a good starting point for this nice playing bass. As I said above I'm looking for a Jazz or similar and would consider a trade with some cash coming from me for the right bass.
17. Wish I had a higher quality P bass (rather than my Mighty Mite/Squier FrankenFender) to part trade with you Ozzy, this would suit me down to the ground. GLWTS
18.
Hah! I still haven't heard back but was emailing last week too. Decided to go for tweeter too, never used one before but thought it would be good to have, but not need - than need and not have!
Wish I'd gone for one with a tweeter too. I've always run 15" cabs with tweeters and being without takes a bit of getting used to. I've managed to get my MB/Barefaced set up running with 3 of my basses but I think the precision will probably have to go in favour of a Jazz at some point.
19. Gsgbass, what's the string tension like on these. I've got Rotos on mine, great sound but I find the tension a bit on the high side compared to the Slinkies on my P bass and Status hotwires on my Ray and Status.?
20. Gotta love red Ricks. If you ever grow bored of the colour and feel the need for a Blue one just give me a call!!!!
21.
They don't really sound like them either
I also found that out :-(
22. Firstly, can't do anything about the ergonomics, you either love them, hate them or learn to live with them. Soundwise, as said above I think your playing style and rig have just as much contribution. My Rick works just fine with a small scale rig, plenty of low end for rock and punk stuff. Ironically with this same rig my P bass sounds pants. If it's not for you then get rid, but if you can learn to enjoy the 'fight' when playing one, play with you rig to get that desired sound and maybe adapt your technique you might get a surprise.
23. Second time that this has come up and I don't have the cash.....arrrgh. Love the MM special editions, still miss my 30th Anni Ray - they really pay attention to detail when they make these. Sorry I can't let my crappenbacker go in trade mate but the band would sack me and I don't think my Status or fretless Ray would interest you for an 80's punk/indie/hip hop/grunge reunion combo. GLWTS - maybe I'll have the cash next time it comes up!
