1.
Really? The neck collapsing into the pickup cavity is pretty notorious. The whole thing where the moved the neck pickup was supposedly to address it, although in the ones I've seen, the route is still oversized so didn't really address the weak point as well as it should have.
Sorry to be pedantic but I thought you meant a physical dislocation of the neck join...not a 'folding up' due to structural weakness caused by excessive routing. In this case it isn't the joint that's at fault but the integrity of the neck through block itself ;-)
2. This would partner my Streamline nicely. Pity I don't have any of your wish list to trade
3. .......and relax. I'd be surprised if the neck join has anythng to do with the relief/action - never heard of this being a weak spot. If anything it should be better than a bolt-on. If there's still a bit of relief in the neck slowly wind it down using the rods.....it's hard to bugger anything up on a 4003 unlike the 4001 - just make sure you apply equal turns to each rod. Regarding the ding, either pay a lot of money to a good restorer or learn to live with it - it doesn't look too bad and I'd be surprised if it knocks the value of the bass much.
4.
If you as a bass player can't hear what the bass line is, then your audience won't notice if you play something discrete and tasteful that you've made up yourself to fit the song.
I'll remeber that when some pillock points out that I missed the octave triplet and passing note 5th in the 18th bar.........
5.
I agree, there is a fair bit you can do with them, the newer models even have a vintage/modern circuit on then them, 2 pups, 2 tones controls, stereo feed if you want it, that's just for starters. Just like a good old P and one trick pony.. great sound no matter what you do imo, The only thing the Rick can miss is a bit of clout compared to a P in the very lowend, but the Rick has a lot of sweet mid sounds that you won't get on any other bass. That's how I hear them.
Depends which Rick..... My 4004 sounds very like a 4003 with added bottom end on the bridge pup and very beefy on the neck pup solo'd. Both pups is, well....different!
6. Same here, swapped out the piece of crap tuners in my Squier P with chrome open geared. Good tuners, good price.
7. Good, honest, working basses......nothing wrong here!
8. I'm just going up Sheffield now James, need to go to look at Audis with the missus. She has more expensive taste in cars than I do in basses......well maybe not. Honestly though mate I daren't, it would be lust at first site and I'd be selling basses/trashing the bank account.
9. Don't tempt me J, don't tempt me! I'm really missing my 75RI - the Rick that replaced it is awesome but I didn't realise how much I'd miss having a Jazz in the house.
10. I wish these would hurry up and sell......
11. This thread is worthless without pics! And Faron (continuing in the bad grammar vein), I would have never had you down as a sexual deviant, you sempt like such a normal guy when you sold me a cab a couple of years back. Just goes to show, you can never know......
12. I liked the tone on mine - it was a newish Korean one (if that makes any difference) and the QC was fine. If I could have lived with the neck dive I probably would have kept it.
13. Definitely a bargain. BTW, Dane off the Rick Resource Column offers wiring harnesses for these at very reasonable prices so you can have all the 4004 and 4003 sounds in one bass should you be so inclined.......
14. I'd love either/both of those. Pity we've both got more basses than cash!
15. Really nice Clarky....wish I could be more than a tyre kicker but it would be a waste of TIM me putting anything up for sale to get the cash together because nothing ever sells on here...
16. Hmmmm, interesting. I'm not a lawyer but I've had to fight a number of licensed/patented tech issues over the years. Reading through the BC topic RIC would appear to have a cast iron case in terms of defending their trademark, however IIRC they have to fight all Transgressions brought to their attention - they can't pick and choose their fights.....
17. How could anyone want a Kingbass over a Stingray? It's the ergonomic disaster of the Status family. Then again my favourite status is the Stealth so what do I know ;-)
18. That's very, very nice. If I didn't have to lose my shirt selling a 4004Cii to acquire it then, well, I'd acquire it.
19. It was grey, I read that McClusky resprayed it with halfords primer
20.
You do'nt even need to swap the pickups to get a 4003 sound. The HB-1 (pickup) has 4 wires. Just connect 1 coil and you have a vintage 4001 sound. Diagrams are available on the internet to have a switch for dual/single coil, or even the tone knob to gradually adding the second coil.
I'd heard that.....just need to find someone to do it, competently.
21. A real shame 4000, I love the contouring on the 4004, it's what drew me to mine, don't get me wrong I love the 4003 but the ergonomics don't work for everyone. These are great basses with a lot of flexibility soundwise, it cant do a 4003 but if thats what you want the pickups are a direct swap. Good luck with the sale
22. Wouldn't you consider the bog basic Squier which are cheap as chips - I've got a Mighty Mite in mine, just needed a bit of shimming.
23. Very nice, unfortunately I don't have any 5ers to trade.
