FS/FT Rickenbacker 4003 Jetglo '04 bass with Ric case. SOLD
martthebass replied to warwickhunt's topic in Basses For Sale
It doesn't look refinned to me John, just paint settling - my recently departed US made Jazz was pretty much like this. I'm not an expert on Ricks, but both that I've had, had non conventional finishes. I don't know if it's part of what makes up the UV cured paint on the newer ones but on dark finishes they sempt to have a haze to the gloss - subtle but definitely present. -
The VVT mod is pretty common according to the resource forum....... Gives control over the mix pup levels in the dual pup setting. The HB1 pups are tappable which gives single coil 4003 type sounds should you want it. I think one of the problems with the 4004 is that you expect it to sound like a 4003; it can if the mods are made but the stock sounds are pretty good and easily tweak able on the amp EQ if it gets a bit 'dark' (I'm using an LM3 with a BF compact - hardly a treble monster and it can still cut through nicely). I'll probably get the VVT mod done when the bass is out of warranty but will wait and see what difference that makes before looking at sourcing the coil tap mod.
MB1. African and White a great bassline. However my faves gotta be" Working with fire and steel"!
Gotta agree Mart, and as a Steelmaker the line 'and things get f#*^d and you're to blame' has haunted me many times....... -
Ditto, had a few guards off Howard meself, all been great!
Naaa! BP isn't a BC admin.
How do you know....... ;-) Seriously though, that's damn tough luck. Happened to me once when swapping necks on a mint MIM Fender Jazz, which is why I tend to avoid taking the neck off basses now if I can avoid it.....certainly wont be doing it on my new Rick. -

Hi George, Glad this has worked out for you mate. Took me a little while to get used to the 4004 sound but it's starting to grow on me. My fave is still the bridge pup solo'd which is sort of a 4003 with added depth. The best way I can describe it is that you can get the Joe Jackson 'different for girls' bass sound without using a pick! Wish you were a bit closer because I'd still like to straighten the neck a little to get a little more buzz and lower action. I'm still likely to do the VVT mod and maybe the coil taps but still trying to decide who would be best to do it! PS. You'd have thought, seeing as they're charging so much for a 4004 at Rickysounds that they'd know that the body sandwich was Walnut NOT mahogany! Lol.

Go through this all the time S. In fact just after I bought my last bass the band I'd been working hard with folded and I thought why not sell a couple including the one I'd just got. You've got 2 nice Ricks mate, enjoy, the passion always returns after a while....and 39 is young!

I know Martin, he'll send it over no doubt when he realises it's 'un-sellable'.....
I never liked his sound either. Way too trebly, not enough bottom end grunt. I guess that's down to EQ ... maybe I'm saying I've never heard a Ric EQd properly. But however you EQ it a Ric is still as ugly as sin!
So now I finally understand the definition of 'Trolling' ;-) You either love em or you don't....each to his own. Fortunately in this age of consumption some of us have sufficient funds to allow the ownership of more than one bass so you can have that 'horrible' plucky-clank for your prog-rock band AND that weasley 'Honk' for your 70's funk band..... Anyhoo.....everyone knows the ugliest bass in the world is the Status Streamline, so if you have one send it to me and I'll happily detroy it for you.

Sanded 4003 Rick. thoughts?
martthebass replied to Chest Rockwell's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Why would someone do that to a particularly nice Rick? Would have thought it would take a couple of hundred or so to sort the back out so if there's no other issues then £900/950 would be a nice deal. I be sure to collect though so you could try it out to make sure the rods are ok and theres no other signs of miss use. -
That is a thing of beauty!!

Glad you're loving it George, I was going to gig mine tonight but decided I'd wait till it had been set up a bit more to my liking. I'm going to have to get to grips with the double truss rod......wish it had a MM wheel lol! After a bit more playing I've really got to agree with you that this is very fat in the bass.....even the bridge pup which adds some Rick clank has loads of bottom end. Have you decided if you're going for the VVT mod yet?

I think I have an unhealthy obsession with black basses...

Firstly, I also think that £20 is reasonable. I've used the market place equally for both buying and selling, and while the jury's out on whether it's saved or cost me money (I kept basses a lot longer before finding this site!) it's definitely been a pleasant process overall. However, a lot of people initially come to this site to sell and a proportion stay on to take part in the forum. I can understand that BC must have running costs but the forum has for years (I've been around through Basworld and Basstalk) been run for the benefit and development of all things bass and I'm concerned that charging for sales is pushing this down a business route and may put put off some individuals from becoming part of this great forum. Sorry to be negative - its my opinion only but hopefully as a long standing member it will be respected for what it is.

I would say this but.....Status Streamline. 7lbs, comfy neck, low action, zero neck dive. Oh and it sounds good too, in my pack other basses have come and gone......
