  2. Hi all, just added a Squier Jazz bass to the herd with the intention of pimping the living daylights out of it for the hell of it. I was wondering if any of you good folks out there have used Bare Knuckle jazz bass pickups and what you thought of them. I know many guitarists who rave about Bare Knuckle guitar pickups so I was wondering if the same could be said of their bass pups. Failing that, any recommendations of jazz bass pups would be gratefully received. I want plenty of grunt! I hear good things about Nordstrand and Bartolini, but have no personal experience of them. Any info gratefully received! Thanks Rob
  3. Played the Tywarnhayle in Perranporth. We played well, but it was one of those weird crowds who don't clap. Silent as an angel's fart in between songs, but loads of people coming up after and saying how much they enjoyed it.

  8. Before the first gig or 2 with a new band, we'll use gigging gear, or if someone's got some new goodies to use. Otherwise, rehearsal room gear will do. Shift work, time constraints etc. an often mean that time playing is more valuable than time schlepping.

  11. I tried a Ric once and didn't like the feel or the tone. The only 2 guys around here who've got them are pick players rather than fingerstyle players. Dunno if that's a coincidence or not, most bassists around here are finger players. *shrug*

  13. Jamiroquai sort of bypassed me first time around, then someone suggested I listened to their bassist. I love his stuff, and I'm growing into the whole band now. Not quite what the OP was about I guess, but yeah.
  14. Shift work makes it difficult. If others in the band aren't working shifts then nobody wants a bassist who can only rehearse alternate weeks. If others in the band are shift workers then usually the shifts don't coincide so there's no rehearsals at all. "What about weekend rehearsals," I hear you cry. I'd be up for that too, but nobody likes rehearsing at the weekend for a number of reasons - the day they have the kids, the missus wants to go shopping, it's my day in the pub, the football is on, can't be arsed etc etc. So I have to wait for quiet periods when shifts stop and I work regular days... then shifts come back and I ask to stay on days... which is ok for a few weeks then I get the threats about what will happen if I don't start doing shifts again, and bye bye band.

  16. Everyone around here seems to want to play classic rock and not much else. Nothing wrong with that in principle but it's getting more and more difficult to get musicians together to write new material. It seems only the youngsters around here are up for something new, but it's generally djent, which I'm fine with, but at 45 I'm viewed by the young uns as a bit of an old git.
  17. I've just done a year with Weazeldust, a punky rock'n'roll band. Had to pack it in due to shift work, unfortunately. Not playing live at the mo, but still writing stuff and learning new stuff on the bass

  21. I'm in the market for the same thing. Looks like I'll be getting a McMillen 12 step - you can either trigger soft synths with it or buy the additional midi expander to trigger hard synths.
  22. Guitar Pro 6 is a nice little program. You can speed scores up, slow it down, loop it etc. Try to work up to being comfortable playing the piece a little quicker, say 5% quicker, than the original during practice, then the piece should feel easily manageable when you get back to playing along to the original.
  23. The black one is a beast. I got me one of these off here a couple of months back. Money well spent - I can't put it down!
