Great topic! 1993 - 2001 I absolutely hated Precisions, I just didn't get it! 2001 - now I love them to death, that's the main bass for me!

I liked the quotes about the value of a vintage when bought new compared to today's inflation adjustment. BUT THIS IS WHERE IT HURTS....... It's not about the 'cost in 1962 versus cost in 2013' that gives me sleepless nights. It's the fact that:

In 1999 a shop I worked in sold a 1957 Strat for £5000, they now go for £18,000 plus
In 1999 I could have bought a 1958 Precision for £3500, they now sell for double that
In 1993 a shop I worked in sold a TV Yellow Les Paul Junior for £1000, now they are at least 7 times that
In 2004 I bought a refinished 1964 Jazz Bass for £2200, they can now often sell for double that
In 2006 a shop I worked in sold a blonde 1961 Stack Knob Jazz for £10,000, it then sold again at another shop I worked in for £18000 3 years later
These are just a few examples. Sleep tight.

For what it's worth, I used to have a JV Precision and a JV Stratocaster. I'd say that they are good instruments, but not worthy of the legend or prices in my opinion. My USA reissue '57 Strat was miles ahead of the JV version, and I always preferred my USA basses. Is a JV worth twice as much as a Jap or Mex reissue? I guess that's down to the guy buying it!

Can a real man wear a...*Purple Metal Flake* Flea Bass?
Chiliwailer replied to Chiliwailer's topic in Bass Guitars
I thought the general concesus was 'Flea basses' were supposed to be junk? (purple or otherwise) Have they suddenly become cool or is this another type of Flea bass alltogether ? (ie: a Modulus in whuich case its a Modulus and not a 'flea bass' which is doing it a disservice, and if you can get it at a good price then do so and good luck to you sir)
Yeah, it's a Modulus. Real deal bass rather than the very cheap alternative. Anyhow, i bought it and am now waiting for it to cross the pond.... -

Help with idenfitying this old jazz pick-up
Chiliwailer replied to Thebassman75's topic in Repairs and Technical
Just so you know mate, these can go for very good money as they are hard to locate. Some sellers in the States have them at amazingly high prices due to the rarity and desirability of a pickup from the golden era of Fender. Good luck! -
Great, thanks. Does anyone have any weblinks for comparisons? I've done a google search but not much comes up..
http://www.andybaxterbass.com/details.php?id=516 http://www.andybaxterbass.com/details.php?id=444 There's a coupe from AB's site with black bottom pickups. His site has excellent pictures of the gear he's selling. Identifying these is mostly down to experience too and looking for the finer details. Knowing the history of the bass can also help work it out, but it does look like an old one to me. -

The bevelled ends of the pole pieces, laquer and burgundy colour wire suggest that this is original. Fender changed to grey bottom pickups in 1964 but some black bottom pickups were used until up to around '67 so it may not be out of place in a '65 bass. Could be an original, best to locate pictures of others and do a 'spot the difference'. Andy Baxters website may be a good point of reference for pictures. Good luck -
SOLD This is such a lovely pickup. I've had it in a few basses, most recently my 1966 Precision. However I now have an original 1964 Precision pickup in my bass so this one is up for grabs. The best way to describe it is a full sounding vintage style pickup. It's a modern pickup so has great punch and definition but what I liked most was how it stayed true to a vintage style of tone. http://www.lollargui...ollar-customers £50 for the pickup, £5 for signed for posting. Cheers! Can a real man wear a...*Purple Metal Flake* Flea Bass?
Chiliwailer replied to Chiliwailer's topic in Bass Guitars
This is great, I've paid for the bass and am really looking forward to it arriving now from the States. So the general Basschat feel is that yes, a real man can play what the hell he likes, and you guys all approve the purple too which is nice to know. I won't dare to start a new topic though, being 'Am I a real man?' Cheers for the awesome replies. -
Love the Velvets, great man. RIP

Is this real......or do I see a Squadron of Saddlebacks overhead....!?!
Chiliwailer replied to SPHDS's topic in Bass Guitars
This eBay seller always winds me up. He charges seriously high prices for his gear, which is often btsa or very ambiguously described. He once sold me a fake bridge cover too, (thank you eBay dispute process!). -
I have dectuplets (if that's even a word).
Wow! Why I haven't I seen this collection sooner. Pictures tell a thousand words. Wow x 1000 matey!

Might as well do this while I can, the mint '66 Precision is up for sale (and I need to do something while the Mrs is watching X Factor) Two '66 Precision Basses, both made in May and 180 place apart in serial number. The mint one will be deeply missed.
1) Has anyone had experience of buying fakes from 'reputable' shops? M*sic Gro*nd have sold more fakes than any of us have had hot dinners. But they specialise in faking old Marshall, Fender Custom Shop or anything else vintage, or 'ex rock star' for that matter. Robbing little buggers. 2) Would anyone bother to fake a cheap Tanglewood? Hell no. Though they are good for cash,. they're too cheap to bother 3) When did the III FH change from 3 to 4 pots? Tanglewood often changed factories and styles, I sold them for many a year (since 1993) and saw lots of changes Cheers.

I That purple is slightly more masculine than classic Fender Burgundy Mist , but not by much . About the whole Lane Poor v Seymour Duncan pickup thing , I've played them both side by side and there really is no discernable difference between the two I certainly can't hear any difference whatsoever , and that OB1 preamp sounds good with it , too.
Yup, classic and replicated Burgundy Mist is not even close to a nicely aged and dirty nitro finished old school Burgundy Mist. Obviously depends on how the bass has aged but they can come up lovely. Good to hear about the pickup thing, the sound clips I heard sound great and just what I'm after having fun with. Now where's that long sports sock....
