Yeah, typical Ray tone is parallel. 
 

The latest Passive Rays have a high output neodymium pickup. The USA short scale has a 500k volume and 100k tone. The Joe Dart has just a 100k vol pot. 
 

I put an alnico pickup in my short scale, with 250k (audio) for both (like my  P Bass) - my supposed logic being that the albino is not as bright as the neo, and on the USA short scale 500+100 is 600, so my use of 250 + 250 is near that 600 total but less bright perhaps. It was good, but I found the 100k seemed better for hearing a difference in tone when adjusting through the sweep. For me, the 250k needed to be much near the end of the sweep to be useful.

+1 - the depth and breath in each note still astounds me on mine. Quite like that passive vibe, but still with the active clarity and punch.

Edit - Also, here’s the pots that came on my old one. Note the neater soldering too, which is typical. I wonder if your pot is original and/or desoldered at some point. 
 

The lacquer line on the back of the neck looks far too neat too, perhaps the head was resprayed and had a new logo?

It seems fine, I once had a near mint condition and 100% original 1966 Precision with a ? on the neck too.

As it happens, some of the dated parts on this particular bass are as early as ‘66 but the most recently dated parts, the pickups, are Mar ‘68 from what I remember. The neck has a Feb ‘68 date stamp which probably means it was started in ‘67 and I think the serial number is often quoted as ‘67/‘68. 
 

Of course, Fender were famous for grabbing whatever parts they had lying around in the bin as part of final completion. This is particularly true of pots with a lot of later basses, right through to early/mid ‘70’s having ‘60’s dated pots in them. I think it was in ‘66 that they bought a huge number 
 

With all these variances kicking around there’s no really definitive guide to exactly when Fender used different parts, neck profiles, etc. 

 

In this case, with the pups being dated March ‘68 it seems fair to call it a ‘68, even though some parts are certainly earlier

 

Just for reference - here’s a ‘69 with lollipops. 
 

Totally agree with Molan, plus around 68 was when the Fender execs started the real penny pinching stuff - my favourite being using up the old greens and yellow amplifier cloth wires on their instruments wiring. They just wanted all old or discontinued parts used up, and not to be ‘green’ I suppose…

Love these pups, and still have one in my “95 StingRay.

This one can be used as normal (parallel), or in series or single coil too as I did a simple mod to use on the short scale EBMM StingRay I just sold.

To use it as normal, just join the white wires together and the black wires together. Otherwise can be used with a switch for more tonal options.

I bought this beginning of 2020, occasional bedroom use only. It sounds beautiful, but I’m mostly playing through headphones and need to free up some cash. Though it’s the smaller version of the popular Blues Jr, I feel the tone on these is much purer.

I’ve just left my this week job due to health reasons, and need to sell a bass as I’ve not yet got another job lined up. I listed my Lull P Bass recently, but couldn’t go through with the sale - so I am now listing this, despite it being my most played bass this year, purely because my other basses are more irreplaceable to me. 
 

- USA EBMM Short Scale StingRay. 
- Weighs a lovely 7.5lbs. 

- Ash body, roasted maple fingerboard.

- Neodymium pickup, passive, push/push volume boost, parallel/single/series switch, and tone pot.
- Comes with original hard case & key.

- No dings, just some marks behind the bridge where stings have been changed and the ball end has hit the body, and very minor and hardly noticeable marks described below, and pictured. 
 

Disclosure - Although the bass is all original, I previously swapped out (and now replaced back) the pickup because I prefer Alnico pickups, that meant I needed to switch out the pots too as the values were wrong for Alnico, and more suited to Neodynium pickups, plus I wanted to be able to bypass all the pots completely. I’ve photographed some minor scratches, only visible when the light bounces off the body, which are likely to have come from when I was tinkering with the electronics. Will probably T Cut out, but I can’t find my bottle.

The new MM neodymium pickups are excellent, but I just can’t get on with them and had the same issue on the Ray Special I owned for a few years. - added a 3 way switch to keep the series/parallel/single option. 

 

- changed the pots to 250k and added a push/pull volume, to send the pickup straight to the output jack. This is because I turned an old EBMM 2 band preamp into a pedal and wanted to bypass the pots in the bass. There’s a photo of my first attempt of the pedal, think I’ll smarten it up in the summer with a better box too. 

Really love this little bass, and I’m glad the tone is now more in keeping with what I like. It’s got TI’s on it, and really compliments my ‘95 Ray and Old Smoothie. Wish they made these 25 years ago! 

Sadly there’s a good chance I may need to sell this bass due to a change in my personal circumstances, I’m gutted to have to let a bass go, but this one was the ‘last one in’ and my others are more sentimental.
