  1. I think it’s the same thing to be honest, (pre amp) just with added options usually - though not as convenient in your hands.
  2. Mine was solderless, no fast battery issues. Fairly easy to install, with a delicate squeeze. John always appears approachable if you need to email him,
  3. I’ve owned a fair few 50’s and 60’s Fenders over the years. But I ain’t that person you think we all are, neither were my reasons for buying, as you put it. Same goes for a great deal of people I sold them to when I worked in the guitar trade and spent time specialising in vintage - those were good folks with a passion for history, gear, nostalgia and good vibes Oh yeah, and many were nicely minted
  4. The history of Denmark Street book by Mike Reid has some great info about that area, and some cool stories, from hundreds of years ago onwards - but oh my gosh do you have to read through some damn awful boring content filler to get to it! I’d recommend it though to anyone with nostalgic ties to the area, but you’ve been warned
  5. Typical Fender.... I once had the long G String screw on a straight 78 P Bass 🤣
  6. Bought my first bass there. Pleased for the owners, sounds like a nice lifestyle move away from a very uncertain looking West End.
  7. Indeed that’s true. I’ve also seen truly awful stuff involving old Gibson guitars and Marshall amps, whereby components from all original ‘cheaper’ models as been taken off and put onto players examples of the very desirable expensive models to make them look legit and untouched - even to the point of using NOS 50’s solder and flux - or used to make models appear to be something else, or used on plain old fakes. Same with refinishes. I helped a friend buy an old 50’s Fender bass on BC from a guy who seemed to have a good rep. On the visit I asked if I could take the bass apart, my friend actually declined as he felt safe with the seller. Some time later when he owned it I took it apart and saw clear signs it was redone by the magnificent Clive Brown. I very much suspect the original owner knew full well that was the case, but that’s another story. Its a market that can be quite unpleasant at times.
  8. I didn’t take it that way, must have come across wrong on my text - but actually you’d be wise to question me!!!
  9. Right you are pal. Despite experience giving a pretty good feel and gut feeling about the body and history etc, I wouldn’t want to bet someone else’s money on it (just my own)
  10. Yup, it’s clearly a refinish. Plastic wires are right for a 69. This looks like an honest players bass, as opposed to a dodgy parts one. I know Music Ground well sadly, as I worked for them until I got sick of their nonsense. They would have put that neck on the ‘right’ body. Looking at the parts, the electrics, the screw holes, it all tells a familiar story. Sorry to sound flippant - I’ve just seen so many of these over the years that it’s really a non-deal for me. There’s no mystery here folks!
  11. It’s all been said really. My guess is a neck replacement, on a bass that has seen some serious mileage. No dates on the neck is common for around 74, so that fits the bill with the 4 bolts and white markers (not black).
  12. I see a third part to this incestuous story in the future...
  13. Gutted for you pal, though get the lay of the land and wish you all the best.
  14. Also, how about a dual concentric with volume on top and pan below? Info from John East: I do have stacked vol/blend on a circuit board, I will post a pic. The shafts are 8mm & 6mm diameter. Blend is DUAL 250K M/N TAPER = both pickups max in centre click, Volume is 250K A (Log/Audio) The blend pot is configured differently to the normal cross-wired standard method so that the impedance is similar to two volumes, although it can be configured in the standard way by changing some jumpers. (The normal way of wiring passive vol/blend makes the impedance resistance lower, equivalent to 3 pots in parallel)
  15. Hey Chris, Not solderless, (or my areas of expertise) but an on/on/on DPDT might do it https://www.stewmac.com/electronics/components-and-parts/switches/mini-toggle-switches.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=shopping&utm_campaign=2020-07-gp&pref_currency=P&shipcalc=UK&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIj7OR5YGx6gIVG-3tCh3ZpgUsEAQYAyABEgKgEvD_BwE
  16. I wouldn’t rewind them if it was mine and I was looking for best tone possible. The magnets would have deteriorated and new bespoke pickups might be better quality all around. I rewound my previously owned 64 Jazz Bass’s pups, but that was a different story as I wanted the old school vibe, though it definitely sounded ‘better’ with the Fralins in.
  17. Blimey, never heard of that before. It got me thinking and I just found this on a LP forum: ‘So, here's my theory: Knowing first hand the fumes from adhesives, off gassing lacquers and solvents used for cleaning after applications of said materials, I believe, the cases are indeed sprayed with vanilla but for no other reason than to mask the smell of the chemicals used in production and clean up.’
  18. Yes, long horn is full size, just...um...er...well...hornier 😳
  19. I’m fairly certain those are 80s latches, so it might be from a first run Jazz Bass Plus?
  20. Best of luck, nothing worse than a case sticking up your guitar, I can still smell an old case of mine 10 years after selling it! On the opposite, my SG case makes it smell nicely of vanilla, due to the nitro I presume.
  21. Nice, wonder if it works on 180 year old cases?!
