Personally, I’d leave it on, but with the screws loosened a little. Reason being, if you took it off you’d need to screw it to some wood anyway or else it’ll seriously shrink, perhaps even overnight if you’re very unlucky. So if it’s taking its natural course, I’d rather have it do that on the bass. Plus nothing else will have that vibe, those old guards are something else. 61 P Bass, eh? Lovely 😊

Nice bass. I was literally just about to post that any straight vintage bass probably passed through JE at some point!
-
Ok, good point. You could remove the lefties 🤣

Cheers for the compliment Chris - but I’m often getting it wrong! 🤣 You know your stuff 👍

I wonder if it’s the height or just badly filed? On a fretted bass, I check out the clearance by hammering on the 1st fret from open, and match that to the clearance when hammering the 2nd from the 1st - not sure if that’ll work on a fretless though as the fret’s not there, but might be a place to start. Sounds like you’re on it though, but just in case you’re not sure what’s next - try smoothing out the nut slot with a file or medium-low grade paper. Failing that, if you have an old bone nut or saddle, just file it to dust, drop it in the slot, add some super glue and file it later in the day - after putting masking tape either side of the nut, for protection against spills.

If it’s got a SD pickup (not sure if the LP pickups came with the truss rod versions?), Aguilar preamp and Badass Bridge,, with case, then I’d say up to £2500 as it’s a rare sparkle finish.

Cheers bro, most comfy P Bass I’ve had yet 👍

Nah, it’s just your comprehension 😂 Its a situational decision for me, so the last paragraph sums up it’s the Ray. You know, story telling.

I seriously doubt you’ll easily find another. As the post above says, get something that is a close match. The marks are in discrete areas, and trust me, having owned a sparkle FB4 the rest of the bass will have your eyes popping out

That’s a really nasty question! P Basses are my soul-bass, so if I was still physically able to join a band it’d be my Lull PJ4 all day long. But as I’m a home player, it’d be my Stingray Special HH as it’s so versatile and Ray’s were my first love so it’s no hardship.

Oh... no, not this one. But a different sunburst FU4 has 🙄 Knowing BC, it could be bloody anyone!
-
I’m sure my arm could be twisted, in fact I’m holding it behind my back now, waiting... I hear green is your new colour, so count me in on your purple FB4

Instruments that you to this day regret parting with!

This Custom Shop Jazz - even though I do miss having a Jazz, it’s because my wife was genuinely gutted when I sold it - she loved it hanging in our hallway. If I’d have known she’d be that upset, I’d have kept it. She still talks about it. Sold it to a top BC’er who lives in Iceland, I’d like to buy it back for her, and begrudgingly play it, just to do the right thing you know... -
Cool, I’d have thought straight neck first, especially if the bass was ok before. Good luck.
-
Not many tbh. You could always put a tiny bit of cotton wool, or similar, in the nut slot to see if that is indeed the issue. I presume it’d have to be very low to cause issues up the neck - could be wrong though.

String too high on the tuning post ...clutching at straws now
-
I reckon this thread will build up a nice big list of possibilities... neck too straight string too low string not sitting well in nut string not sitting well on saddle string hitting pickup (pup too high or string too low) string hitting end of fingerboard duff string warped neck

IIRC - Rockers, and their sister stores, in Denmark Street (so likely Music Ground in Leeds too) had basses like this about 15 years ago, I think the later ones had the Rockers logo? Nothing overtly special, just a cheap and good looking Far Eastern bass that was around for a short while.

I’m a P90 fan, not as twangy as a s/coil, but not as dark as a humbucker. They have some bite in the bridge and characteristic mids, but may not be everyone’s thing. The Gibson P94 (P90 in HB size) has quite a unique look. My favourite pups are Fralin, they do a more classic looking cover and I bet it’ll be a blinding pup - https://www.fralinpickups.com/product/p-90-humbucker-cover/

Cheers for the link. In the mid 00’s I saw the reunited original Pentangle line up - THAT tone he has sent shivers down my spine, to hear it live and that loud was truly something special.

Have you got any mates in the US who could ship this to you (Jazz width neck) and say it’s a $500 bass https://shop.music-man.com/ernie-ball-music-man-stingray-special-slo-special-hh-black.html

I like the Cobalts, depending on the bass they are going on. I see them as strings for people who like the characteristics of flats but want a brighter sound, as opposed to vice verse. They don’t attack like a round.

Sold some strings to Aidan in a smooth, easy going and friendly sale.

Here a Martin acoustic guitar case (Parlour size). It’s around 180 years old!
