Well, purely for your convenience I’ll soon be bumping my Old Smoothie advert in the classifieds. Sadly my subtly isn’t quite as smooth as Old Smoothie
-
Sir, I’ll take your USA passive SUB (which I once owned and enjoyed) and raise you an Old Smoothie - for cleaning up the zing of the pre 2018 Rays, but adding some serious booty and punch if you need it too
-
Oh my a Ricky, well you know what they say about people living in glass houses 🤣 (Couldn’t resist - it’s just banter, it’s not worth arguing over subjective opinion )

I think the saddle issue is about the hollow ones, which as well as being on the Specials have been on the Classics. Or so I read on TB. Some guys on TB are also getting longer screws for the A&D string on the Special to get a crazy low action.
-
In one of the promo videos for the new Specials one of Sterling Ball’s sons talks about fixing the issues with the A and G string. I’ve never heard of the A string issue before though.

Personally, I’d be fine with taking a trade as long is went straight up for sale. -
Looks great, nice one 👍
-
Sorry to hear that pal, wishing you both all the best.
-
Gus, seriously, come over any buy my Stingray, then put all this hideous (but oddly wonderful) Russian stuff behind you. She’ll love it
-
Elixir have a very light coating, so although they are both coated, they would be quite different in use. They can last a long time, so i hear. I've never tried them though. Damn, now i have an itch...
-
Brilliant, thank you, can’t wait to watch it soon. Love Roberts bass playing, love STP, can’t wait 😊
-
Brings back memories of sound engineers always telling me to cut the bass EQ on my Stingray when I was a young lad starting out. Happy days!

For my taste flats would suit both as well each other, depending on what music you're playing on them. That's the bottom line for me, so what music will you play on them both? If it's one for modern tones (some slap, rock, funk etc.) and one for mellow stuff, put the flats on the passive one. But if you want to mellow out the active one, put flats on that. Etc... Anyway, flats on a Ray - nice

Are you able to chuck a wad of cash at this? You could buy 3 different sets ( e.g. Chromes, Cobalts, tapewound), try them all out on a rainy day, and then sell the losing two sets on the BC marketplace and recoup some cash back. If you can, then it's time to push the button I reckon

2019 Gear Abstinence Challenge (Updated with 'rules')

Loving this. I’ve been clean since September 7th, and have a bet with my wife that if I buy a bass in 2019 I have to buy her a £600 handbag - funny thing is, she’s not even remotely interested in a £600 handbag -

Ooh, that’d be harsh if that went against you! I thought you were hell bent on putting food in the mouths of guitar shop owners? -

The Special came out in the Ststes in July, but didn’t get here til beginning of September. MM don’t mass produce, they build to order (from shops/suppliers, rather then customer custom order).

My love hate relationship with acoustic basses
Chiliwailer replied to Brook_fan's topic in General Discussion
Had my acoustic bass for 25 years now, strung with flatwounds and used with a soundhole pick up when I used to gig it. Phospher bronze strings and under saddle pickups are things of evil -
The D’Addario website has links to tension charts (under the red ‘buy’ button) when you check out a set. http://www.daddario.com/DADProductDetail.Page?ActiveID=3769&productid=159&productname=ECB80_Chromes_Bass__Light__40_95__Long_Scale Generally, flats have more tension. The difference between the 40-100 rounds and 40-95 flats doesn’t seem to be too much though.

All three. Smoother feel, softer tone, last for ages or forever depending on taste. I use Chromes on my P Bass, had a set on for 18 months and I can’t see that changing. Chromes have a nice bright edge to them, and are a peach once they’ve aged. But in your position, I’d also consider the EB Cobalt Flatwounds, which I used on an old PJ of mine and now have on my Stingray Special. They are technically flats, but lean more towards the brightness of rounds. As said in an earlier post, flats can start bright, but these have other properties of rounds that’s a nice touch too.

Your best (and worst!) bass gear purchases of 2018?

Love that Jazz Bass, it’s in good company there Gus. Looking good 👍 -
Your best (and worst!) bass gear purchases of 2018?

Best - Music Man StingRay Special. In fact, not just for 2018, but period. Worst - Music Man StingRay Special.... because I’ve now lost all interest in buying more/other basses 😂
