Our first single... whatcha think?
Chiliwailer replied to jonnyenglish358's topic in General Discussion
Use the comments that make you think. ignore the ones you don't click with, that always helped me anyway. Good job, so good luck -
***ON HOLD UNTIL FRIDAY*** Hand made in Seattle, this is a stunning bass. As well as having a top end tone it's very light weight with perfect balance (not always the case with light basses). The neck pocket states that this was made for the 2015 NAMM show, it's something special and the neck is the nicest I've seen on a Lull. I bought it new from Bass Direct in May 2015. Weighs dead on 8lbs. Ash body, maple neck with Jazz nut width 1 1/2". It has a Nordstrand Dual Coil bridge pickup and a retro fitted Lindy Fralin Precision pickup. It originally came with a Nordstrand Precision pickup, which though good quality was too modern sounding and coloured for me. The two pickups work so well together on this bass, it's a great match as you can now have a vintage style Fender tone or modern tone when both are on, or when the bridge is solo'd. It's worn flats all it's life so the frets are spot on. It now has rounds on for the sale. There is a small ding which I'll photo, nothing major at all and some superficial scratches and knocks. There is also a small mark on the neck where I smoothed out a tiny ding, it can't be felt at all when playing. It used to have a working toggle switch, which is no longer wired up, so there is a new hole in the pickguard. I will also include a black Mike Lull made pickguard in the sale which does not have the new hole. Comes with Lull certificate and Protec Case. This is a very reluctant sale. I've decided today to increase my share of the 'part rent/part buy flat' I live in so the funds from this bass will pay for the fees and solicitors. Those that know me, will know that I thought this was a keeper, but I recently cleared my savings out buying back my old 66 Precision, so rather than make that mistake again I'm selling this one. Not an easy choice, but a Lull won't be as hard a bass to buy again in the future. NO TRADES PLEASE - 100% genuine reason for sale. Sorry, I really can't post at the moment so it's collection only from Harrow, NW London/Middx. I'm close to Harrow & Wealdstone station which is 15 minutes from London Euston on a fast train. **CLICK ON ANY PICTURE TO BE LINKED TO MORE**
Surely it would be dodgy pots though, for it to be the same for each pickup? Which seems highly unlikely, unless an issue with one somehow has a knock on effect on another.
But they work in a chain, the signal has a flow.

Possibly a dodgy pot If you have a soldering iron though you may want to go over the solders in case of a dry joint.

Our first single... whatcha think?

It takes a lot to get a band to that stage, so you've done really well to get there, nice one. So much is about taste though isn't it? It's not the type of music I'd listen to but the singer can sing, you guys have made something as a unit and the tune has a catchy element. My main thoughts are that the guitar delay and some parts are too obvious, stripping back would have worked well. You played the bass well, and I see how it matches up with the guitar vibe, but that delay might just have you guys playing in a way that is verging on self indulgent and doesn't back up your singer (though must be fun to play loud, right?!). My advice would be the age old 'less is more' and to play purely for the song and the singer (because it's that kind of music). Also, get a critical producer who will challenge you, not just a guy who will make the sound good and hit record. (Edit - 'press the record button!'). If that's your starting point, you guys will progress great and have a lot of fun along the way so keep it up -
Nice bit of history that's in the right hands I'd say
I did try LaBellas on it first off as I'd liked them previously but they didn't quite feel right to me on this bass. I preferred the TIs to the rounds it's currently sporting but if I keep it I think I'll give chromes a go.
I like TI's, but oddly never as much on my 60's basses. I reckon Chromes might seal the deal for you, they compliment my 66P very well. Good luck with the sale, or working it out.

2814 set, 45,65,80,100. Very bright flats, with a modern tone that lean more towards rounds, but feeling very smooth. I still use these strings on my P and J Basses but have a used spare set. These were on one of my P Basses for a week, then on and off my Music Man Sabre 2 times (G String wasn't cut short). In that time I put a new set on my P and then took these off the Sabre. They haven't seen a great deal of use, but as they've been on and off a few times the purple silk is frayed and missing in places at the headstock end. Collection from Harrow for £20 or I can post on Wednesday 3rd for £23. Cheers.

A very lovely fella from Spain bought a Modulus Flea from me a few years back. He was so pleased that he then sent on 6 bottles of absolutely gorgeous Spanish red wine. You don't get that on Gumtree or eBay

This 2012-16 series really is the dogs boll*cks. I have a 2015 Jazz Bass and since I put a series / parallel switch in it's one of my most used basses. Which is quite odd as I'm really a P man .
A Fender Marcus Miller Jazz is still on the list as well as a Fireglow 4003.
Sounds good. Though I'm more than happy with what I have, a Ric, Ray, Bongo and EB2 would make up a nice list for me
Must add one of these to the arsenal one day.
I've been saying that too for over 10 years, hope it isn't another 10 years until I do.... Good score Machines.

An experiment; listen first, read about it afterwards, please..?
Chiliwailer replied to Dad3353's topic in Share Your Music
Fair play, was a wonderful imitation of poor Jazz - that's a compliment if you know what I mean? Shame the drums weren't as real and live as the other samples. You need to get on the kit -
Not sure about the rules tbh, but I once spoke to my bank about it and they said it'd be safe. When I've done it, it takes 3-4 days to clear. Last time it took more, perhaps due to a bank holiday in Italy. Maybe there is a new 24 hour service I wasn't aware of?
If you want to get the maximum out of your current computer try the following: 1. Make sure you aren't running any applications other than your DAW program. 2. Turn off Bluetooth and WiFi 3. Unplug any USB peripherals that aren't actually being used for making music. For a laptop that should be everything except your audio interface, and external audio drive if you are using one (you really should be). 4. If you are feeling really brave make sure you are complete disconnected from the internet and turn off your anti-virus programs. Don't forget to turn them back on when before you reconnect! Does your version of Cubase have meters for showing the amount of processor and disk usage while it is running? These can be invaluable in tracking down performance bottlenecks. IME the biggest performance boost you can give a laptop is to replace the system drive with an SSD, and then buy a big fast external USB 2 or 3 drive to store all your audio files on.
Nice one Red, much appreciated. There's some good advice there so I'll give it some of it a go next time I switch on. Cheers
Thanks Chili Those synth textures came from Massive Darkscore V for Massive and Photosynthesis Volume 1 by Audio Imperia. It's good. Very, very good. It's quite an outlay but it all sounds great together and is easy to work with. How much RAM do you have in your computer though? My piece above had around 24 tracks plus a reverb track and takes 9.5GB of RAM and there's not a lot on there! The solo violin was Kirk Hunter Solo Strings by the way. A really nice sounding library but you need to try and match the reverb to Albion One's. I find that Native Instruments' RC 48 on a medium hall preset gets you close. The legatos in KH Solo Strings aren't great IMO. I tried a lovely sounding cello legato but it loops incredibly badly and you can hear a very sharp loud attack note halfway through the loop. It looped after around 3 seconds too so it was unusable in this. The violin I went with (the Stradivarius patch) was better but I can hear where it loops. Fairly subtle as I timed the dynamics to dip around the loop point but honestly, I shouldn't have to work around this sort of thing. I'm eyeing up Spitfire Solo Strings as a result now.
Boy, you sound deep into this, good on you Thanks to a recent bass purchase I have cash flow issues, due to an old laptop I have RAM and weak processor issues, due to using Cubase Elements I have currently have drum issues as Groove Agent doesn't have a beat designer type tool, and due to general life I have very limited time to play around making tunes. Therefore, whilst this week off work has been great to tinker and learn I'll be stuffed when I go back. First thing though will be to sort out a beat designer tool. After that, I reckon I can save for a better laptop and then Albion if all is going well. To me £399 is not really a lot for an instrument/ tool like that. Cheers for the run down, maybe in a year or two I'll be digging up this thread again to see what you used!
Probably. However if you are using a lot of effects it might be worth thinking about how you are using them and work in a more efficient and processor friendly fashion. There is a great temptation because it is quick and easy and you can use each effect as many times as you want (given that you have enough processing power) to slap each effect onto the instrument or audio channel that it is processing. However if you have several channels all using the same effect with the same or very similar settings, then it is far more efficient to route all these channels to a bus and put one instance of the effect on the bus.
Good advice, cheers. I'll definitely have to go down that route next time. I started off thinking that each track would have unique fx, only to realise that some had pretty much the same and that other tracks were getting duplicated, therefore again maxing the fx. I'll put that bus suggestion on my 'to learn' list. Worryingly, the plug ins are acting up too, without fx being used anywhere else. I put it down to having an i3, but wonder what difference an i5 or i7 would actually make. I've no reason to be cynical, just a nature flaw
-
I'm new to all this, like a week in. Already, possible laptop issues are presenting themselves. I have a 2-3 year old HP, i3 processor and 8GB RAM. Running Cubase Elements, but getting a lot of processing issues so need to constantly freeze tracks. I use a lot of inbuilt fx and instruments so wonder what, if ever, would be a worthy upgrade?

Sweet, cool to hear that bass line played. Nice one. I knew there was another reason that I had my eye on Madonna as a kid

Uh oh, want the Albion One now....
Here's mine. https://soundcloud.com/mornats/i-am-become-death I wanted something that built up dramatically but didn't go on and on building up so I went fairly mournful at the end, focusing a bit on the aftermath of the bombs. Learnt a fair bit about midi cc controls and was very chuffed when I managed to get my Maschine Jam set up to control up to 8 midi cc sliders at once! Expression, dynamics and vibrato all at my fingertips whilst I play away in Albion One now! I've even got a fair few sliders left for luscious verb and what not.
Another one from your top drawer, luscious textures and arranging

Fender announcement. No more rosewood 'boards.
The tone might possibly be a tad different, but if you don't believe in tonewood then you won't have anything to stress over. That said, if you don't believe in tonewood then why not go for ebonol and a plastic-foam, lightweight body. [/gripe]
-
