Ex-Pino stack-knob at New Kings Road Guitars
Chiliwailer replied to rodney72a's topic in Bass Guitars
Another big factor Rick has to contend with at NKR is that most of the gear there is on a commision sale basis, so if the selling punter wants the top end of the market back on it, there's another chunk on top for the shops end, (then eBay's end which factors on cheaper gear too). However for some buying punters this is ok because they'd rather pay extra and spend their hard earned £1000's in an established shop, with a bonified reciept, rather than buying from say you or me. I love the guys at NKR and had 3 happy years there, I can't defend £16k but i bet it'll sell for much less in the end. Perhaps it's also that Pino only wants to sell if he can get top dollar? It is what it is, buy it or don't i guess. In my time there I saw some lovely gear come in and out, some hang around and some sell in a flash, it's a funny market that'd give me sleepless nights if it was my bread and butter. Like Jebo1 said, it's all gone a bit silly now, but the wheels still turn somehow. -
"Paint re touching by Clive Brown" Eh??
Clive is a bit of a hero in the vintage world. He calls his work 'restorations' rather than refinished. Some of his work is simply outstanding. This is not the best example to be fair, but then it did have a huge chunk taken out of it -
Trigger Finger - Anyone been treated for it?
Chiliwailer replied to hiram.k.hackenbacker's topic in General Discussion
Thanks Daniel. I would definitely be open to acupuncture again if it was recommended as I had it some years ago when I damaged my radial nerve. That and some fairly rigorous physio made it bearable at least.
That's good to hear, it's only as good as the practitioner so hope you find a good one if you end going for it. -
Trigger Finger - Anyone been treated for it?
Chiliwailer replied to hiram.k.hackenbacker's topic in General Discussion
Really sorry to hear about your situation mate. I can't help, but as I've had great results with acupuncture I looked at this http://www.acupuncture.org.uk/public-content/public-ask-an-expert/ask-an-expert-muscles-and-bones/ask-an-expert-muscles-and-bones-hands-and-fingers/3707-would-acupuncturist-help-for-trigger-thumb.html it's not exactly helpful, but another iron for the fire perhaps. Best of luck with the issue pal -
Could it be that it's not actually a very good bass?
Might be, but then he has been selling a few through them recently. -
<p>
At one time, Kiwi had a Modulus Sonic Hammer -- which I believe was the bass on which the Flea model was based. It was an absolute monster. He brought it to my place once and we tried it at some considerable volume through my rig in the garage. If I recall correctly, a shelf fell off the wall.
Haha! Yup, they are absolute monsters. I love my Stingray 5 but it sounds tame compared. Reminds of the time I took my 300 watt Valve Head and 4x10 to my mates house. We plugged it in upstairs, played some heavy dub sounds and came downstairs to find his little 1 year old terrior shaking in a puddle of pee EDIT: I do love animals, shouldn't laugh really but you had to be there. She got lots of cuddles
Just love that bass. Hang onto that one mate. It's a cracker.
Funnily enough, I was offered £2500 and then £3000 this morning by a guy who's chasing one and saw I had one. The very risky process doesn't add up for me though .... Paypal, live and work abroad etc. So luckily I don't have a painful decision to make because well, it's a killer bass but £3000 is £3000

Flea's National Anthem at Lakers vs. Jazz
Chiliwailer replied to bluesparky's topic in General Discussion
How about this, is this a fair statement? Flea "bombed". It can happen to anyone. Blue
Yup, that could be it amongst many other possibilities, and it is a fair statement if that's the case. I'll never get to play anywhere near Flea (and others), so it would be nice to know that sometimes they can bomb just like I can -
Oh the irony of people moaning on a forum about people moaning on a forum. You gotta love this place.
Um, do you not see the irony in that line? It's wasnt a moan though, it was a tip of the hat. -
I guess I would bring the same defense to any of my generations bass heroes if he had a bad night. Blue
That's the difference Blue, I'd defend anyone on this. Your constant 'us and them' generational thing leaves me cold and confused. -
I think it's hard even For Flea fans to defend this embarrassing performance.
I'm finding it harder to defend this 3 page thread full of anger, holier than thou judgments, narcissism and negativity. Flea started his journey as a punk, heavily influenced by Jazz musicians in his family home and Funk on the record player. He clearly improvises for the love of it, doesn't give a monkeys about rules and restrictions and often admits himself that sometimes improvisation doesn't pull off and we all have off days. As a kid I watched his bass video, he called bad improv days something like 'days when your head feels like a stale marshmallow' He's also human, sensitive and allowed a bad day at the office. If he did have a bad day at the office, so what? If he was nervous, so what? If he's happy with what he played then also, so what? At least he had the balls to do it and isn't on a forum picking holes in it -
First Bass you owned - still have it?
Chiliwailer replied to LewisK1975's topic in General Discussion
Rockwood by Hohner LX100B because it looked more metal than a Squier P Bass. Had the chance to buy it back at one point, glad I didn't. Still got an acoustic bass I bought when I was 16 and found life after metal, I'd never sell that in a million years. -
Exhibit D: D is for Dorsey (Gail Ann). Not a signature bass obviously, but it is synonymous with her and if Ernie Ball ever did such a thing....dream on.
Love it, nice job Can't wait to see pics of your Exhibit R...

It's easy Rob, just order through a CS dealer, I'd personally use Crispin at Regent Sounds, and the quoted price is VAT and duty included. But a team built one would be less hands on with customer service than you'd have most likely go with your Wals. It's been a while since I checked in, but when you go Masterbuilt I'm pretty sure you can have contact with the builder, though limited of course as they are popular. In response to Fingerz post above: I'm a fan of CS basses, and have had my hands on between 25 and 30, if not more, in the past 3 years. Before that I worked for Fender and elsewhere as a CS dealer... so I've played a few I'm not going to say they are amazing, the dogs danglies and be an obsessed fan boy. Though I am a fan and see their place in the world. Some have been better than others, two have had neck issues and one or two have been pretty awful. But the others were excellent, and about 3 maybe 4 exceptionally good. As the retail prices are very high, it'd have to be a rarer exceptional one for me to pay full retail. As for master built, the cost of a new one is way too high for me to consider anyway, but I get why people get a huge kick out of ordering and owning them. As with any bespoke make, builder etc, you never know what you'll get till you get it. I'd presume that the odds of getting just an average one are raised with a CS team built than a smaller maker. But that's just common sense init?
Thanks for that, now I have Lull GAS.
There is a solution (and it's great with flats...)
Put your wallet in the safe, walk carefully to the sofa and read a book on an unrelated subject for an hour or two...
Good advice there, though picking up my Lull generally eases any unjustified GAS
-
Yes, why not..? And an active/passive switch.
Starting to get GAS envy over here... EDIT - in keeping with the OT, TI's for me though please. My fingers are too naturally dubby for those lovely LaBella's.
-
My current Jazz GAS involves a Jazz body, a P neck and La Bella 760FS flats. And possibly a good Pre of some sort.
Series / parallel switch too?
No, just pictures. I'm disappointed to hear it's not great. I've seen Rory's original......
Sadly sunburst jazz guy is right, they look pretty awful in the flesh. And if you've been lucky enough to see the original it'd be game over!

Can't see what the problem is, they wouldn't make them if people didn't want them. I guess it's like the football fan that wants their fave players name on the back of the shirt, or the music fan girl who wants to wear Beyoncé perfume, they can do what they like with their £'s. I own a Modulus Flea, only signature bass I've ever owned. But that's because of the specs, though im a childhood Chili's fan it wouldn't bother me if it was a Flea or a Funk Unlimited model. I once had a Jeff Tweedy signature Martin acoustic too, just because I liked the spec. I was cool with that as it was a subtle signature model. I like the Eric Clapton Martins but couldn't deal with his signature on the fingerboard to be honest, or anyone's for that matter Over the years I've sold lots of signature basses and guitars to people who were really chuffed to buy them, I'm glad for them.

Bought a bass, all was good. Cheers.
