I wouldn't buy the regular Fender pickups, though the CS ones aren't bad. That said, I'm a huge fan of Lindy Fralin, I've had them on J's and P's and they are great for a vintage vibe with some modern oomph. But then I've also had great experiences with Jason Lollar, SD Custom Shop or Antiquity and Nordstrand. So many good pickups out there......

I hear you mate, but for some guys, it's not about the money at all. They may want to avoid the emails and viewings, or maybe they have a tasty collection and they don't want people coming around and seeing that. So they are either paranoid of people or payments and scams. If money is no object to them, then they are happy to pay the commission so that they don't have to put the time in. I had the opposite recently. Bear in mind that when selling very expensive gear sometimes buyers trust dealers and shops more. If I'd of sold my 57 P Bass via a commission sale I'd have got back more than I did selling it on BC as they'd have priced it much higher and taken less commision than usual due to the rarity and high value. But at least this way I got my money back when I needed it, and I didn't have to wait months to get the cash back from a dealer who's selling at a premium rate.

Another smooth and easy deal, with Chris. Always a pleasure, never a hassle. A good man.

3rd deal completed with Isabelle. I don't speak French, so limited ( nice and to the point) communication is fine by me
I wonder if anyone really did? City boys probably...
Yup, one with a killer flame went for around that figure. Not a lot of money to pay when you're a hedge fund manager.

The debate that never gets resolved and refuses to die.... Thanks heavens I didn't spend £200k+ on a 59 LP back in 2007. Mental prices indeed.

Raised A poles on vintage Precisions
Chiliwailer replied to chrisanthony1211's topic in Bass Guitars
Both the raised A after 59 and slab after 62 would be quite rare, but not impossible. Back then Fender always used up whatever was still around, despite the year or current specs. My old 69 P had green and orange amplifier cloth wiring that they were using up after they changed to plastic wire, love it -
If I was buying a vintage guitar I'd normally stay away from refins, because it's easier to hide defects and changes that have been made etc.
Reminds me of another 66 P I owned in the mid 2000's, had been routed under the pickguard from the cavity to the horn, and most likely done with s screwdriver! Sounded lovely though It's the one that got stolen and returned to Noah and the Whale.
Thanks for the info guy, it's the one on the bass direct site with all the detailed pics.
I like that shop. It's a heavier one for a 66, the 4 I've had have been around 8 - 8.5 lbs. That doesn't mean it's not original though of course. Pickup looks like it's probably right.
Echo everything Chili has said here. A mint (and it looks barely ever played) 66' is available here for £5950. I know David and he's a stand up guy, and there's probably a bit of wiggle room on price. It really is an investment quality piece. http://www.davidjpym.com/page292.html
Blooming heck, I had to check pictures of my old one as they look so similar. Gorgeous! Oh, the ones that got away.....

Shouldn't be any lacquer on the fingerboard itself, sounds odd. The pickup being original or not is a big deal for me, there should be a hand written date written on a grey backed pickup. In rare circumstances they'll still have the old black bottom pickups, but as said, that is pretty rare from what I've seen. If it's black bottomed the ends of the pole pieces should be bevelled. Two years ago I sold a gorgeous 1966 P Bass here on basschat (actually, I've sold 3 1966 P's on here!), it was all original in nicely reliced sunburst but had an original 1963 pickup in it which had been rewound. I'm pretty sure that went for £2400. I sold a mint condition 1966 P Bass on here as well for a bargain £3500, it was worth more, but it wasn't selling and I'd bought it cheap anyway. (It ended up in Denmark St after I sold it where it was overpriced and didn't sell). So to me it makes yours look pricey at £2500. Especially if the pickup isn't right, that's a huge issue for me at that money. I'll state the obvious, collectiors prices for original ones have forced up the prices of the non original ones. But the one you're buying is in my opinion a lot of money for old wood. Sure, old wood feels great and that's worth something in terms of mojo, but it's still a lot to spend. If the pickup was original and you absolutely love it then you need to decide just how much it's worth to you to play for a players 66 P Bass....that's what it's worth IMO. Plus, you need to be sure it is an original body, harder to do when its refined. Like I said, I'm no expert so take all advice with a pinch of salt.

I've owned quite a few 66 P Basses, from mint to players. I'm no authority on them but could have a pop at what it'd be worth to me. The way the market is prices can vary dramatically. Does it have original pickup, pickguard, bridge and tuners? Is the logo original? Has the neck been over sprayed with lacquer? Are there dates on the neck and pickup? What's the asking price?

6-String Basses | Modulus | Roscoe | Spector | Warwick - Comparison
Chiliwailer replied to AngelDust's topic in Bass Guitars
Nice one AngelDust Warwick and Modulus do it for me. -
As a rule, I always get rid of what I don't need or what can be covered by something else I have. Not saying that's a rule for all though. When you toss a coin you always know which side you want it to land.
-
All great advice above, Just to add that you could restring it E A D G C so that you have another high string instead of the low B. Also, beware of the string spacing, some 5's are cramped and make it harder for some.

There was nowt wrong with the OP in my view, thought it was a nostagicly funny reflection of what's out there and where some of us may have been once.

Selling the dearest bass in my collection ....
Chiliwailer replied to RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE's topic in General Discussion
Been there myself a few times so get where you're coming from. These days though I simply keep the ones that I get real use of and let go of the ones that I own just because I like them for whatever reason. I find it healthier really and though I've let go of some killer basses I know that I have what I need, not want I want. For me that's simpler and financially better, but I love that other guys have a big collection either because they can or because that's what they like. Just depends what camp you're in, or forced into. -
Personally I think there should be a one-day BC Amnesty, during which we all have the right to get back any bass we used to own.
That's a great idea, but at the rate we all swap basses there's gonna be some arguments That said, I'll have back the Ltd Ed CS 55 P Bass i sold you, loved that one

Voted 4 due to my P Bass, but prefer practice on a 5. Will change my vote when I get the right Lull PJ5.
