  1. No, just a standard bridge. I was looking at some short scale EB Cobalt flats earlier but wouldn’t be delivered for another month at least. Can’t wait that long!
  2. So I have the short scale now, it’s I’m utterly filthy so I’m currently giving it a good scrub and fumigating it. Its fitted with small tuners, so that’s going to cause me problems with flats i guess?
  3. Haven’t paid anything yet. They’ve had them advertised on marketplace a couple of months, stated at £30 and dropped them to £25. Only a single set, the sellers other adverts are your usual random marketplace items. They had sold a set Elixir acoustic guitar strings and some musical equipment. So could be genuine. Isn’t that far from where I am so I thought I’d whizz over there and see if I could tell if they were fakes or genuine.
  4. Photos of the packaging. I can’t tell if that’s the proper holographic sticker
  5. Has anyone seen a fake set of Elixirs with the later packaging recently? Just curious if there’s anyway of checking without opening the packaging. I’m going to look at some later from marketplace and they are unopened - I imagine the seller won’t want me to open them to check the strings themselves.
  6. Ok so is it a case of using heavier gauges than usual to get some tension back into the strings? I’ve tried low tension flats before and didn’t hate them but didn’t really get on with them either and for years I used 30-90 sets so I don’t usually use very heavy gauges. I honestly don’t know what strings are currently on it. I doubt they are labella’s. Look like some non specific stainless rounds. Bit rusty. Absolutely filthy. The neck needs a really good clean and freshen up. I’ll take some pics, the frets look like they’ve been smoking 40 a day for the past 10 years 😄
  7. If that’s a cash converter type place I wouldn’t probably buy from there. You usually find the same thing for sale privately on Facebook marketplace or here or possibly eBay cheaper. As a few have mentioned you can pick up some really low priced decent basses at Thomann with all the full warranty, 30 day no quibble return stuff too.
  8. It’s arrived! All seems ok so far, well no damage anyway. I’ll probably do a NBD post but leave you with this teaser and another question….. When you use cut down long scale strings I assume the tension becomes a lot lower due to the shorter length? Do actual short scale specific strings resolve this? oh and the photo may explain the string question , this was after 5 minutes max.
  9. Don’t get me wrong, I started off as a huge cynic about a lot of things and that hasn’t got any better with age 😄 Turns out I’m a soft northern monkey, with a resting “don’t speak to me “ face
  10. ABM used to make a brass adjustable nut. Much cheaper than the over priced Warwick ones and I’m a big fan of Warwick’s and adjustable nuts but no reason for the insane price tag.
  11. Update: all week the parcel has been showing estimated delivery date 4th August. So, imagine my suprise and annoyance yesterday afternoon when I look at the app to find they’d attempted delivery while I was out for the day! 😤😤 Got home later to find no card and checking on the app the parcel had been returned to the depot almost an hours drive away ……. Hope today goes better 🤞🏻
  12. Are the bodies scaled down too?
  13. Upgrades should not just be about resale imho. You can always swap the parts before selling. Now, wallet out 😄

    AGH basses?

Like some of those, familiar looking shapes to some other high end builders. Competitive pricing too. Good luck to them.
  15. The older I get the more sensitive to music I seem to become. Even happy tunes can start me going.
  16. I’ve never been a fan of rotosounds so that’s no loss for me. Took me years to settle on Elixirs and still unsettled on which flatwounds so I guess the short scale will just be more time and expense experimenting.
  17. That’s very good to know, they had become my go to.
  18. It seems that part of the issue is a preferred long scale string isn’t often available as a short scale. Then again maybe preferences change on short scale? Is that a thing. Strings feel and sound different on different scales?
  19. Back when I was playing regularly I started to use Elixirs, I haven’t checked but wonder if they do short scale sets.
  20. What’s the general consensus on using long scale strings trimmed down? Just came across this on FB seems like a good idea if not the prettiest. Since the selection of short scale bass strings is limited and often hard to find, I have come up with an easy way to use any length string on your bass. I went to my nearest home improvement store and bought a couple of electrical copper lugs for 14 ga wire (about $1.50 each). I put them in a vise and ground off the flat lug part so that it was just the cylinder. I put my long scale string on the bass so the silk is in the correct position on the headstock above the nut. The ball end is now sticking out from the back of the bridge since the string is too long. I cut the ball end off the string and slide the copper lug on the cut end of the string up to where it meets the bridge and tighten it down holding onto the lug with some large pliers and using a flat screwdriver to tighten the screw. I snip off the excess string from the back and I’m done. The lugs are reusable when you change strings and I have never had one slip off. It’s fast and easy and has allowed me to use Cobalt Flats on my Hofner Ignition Club Bass and they have made it into a beast. Before I came up with this workaround, I broke an E string and an A string trying to get them to work on this bass since the unwound portion of many strings will not bend sharply enough around these tiny tuners without breaking. I suppose you could also add some super glue to the new “ball end” for added security but I’ve used this method for three years without a failure.
  21. This waiting lark is no fun, I’ve got two incoming, one hasn’t hit customs yet and the other was supposedly 48hr delivery with parcelfarce….. collection was on the 1st and estimated delivery is the 4th. How’s that 48 hours?
  22. Have you listened to any Cardiacs? If you like stops, starts and odd time signatures you should try them. Oh and Thumpermonkey too.
  23. Damn I missed your post! 😄 ah well a band with 4 bass players needs all the exposure they can get.
