Blur had loads of exposure on BBC last night. An intimate recent-ish gig from BBC Radio Theatre, a Glastonbury set from 2009(?) and then some of their appearances on Top Of The Pops. I’ve always liked Blur, not up there as a favourite band, bought maybe 2 of their albums, but they did have some great pop songs. Apart from a few major fluffs from Alex James on the recent gig, I’d forgotten or maybe never noticed how good a player and his bass lines are. Very melodic, driving and not as simple as I’d thought. The Glastonbury gig especially, everything was played at a faster tempo than the recordings and he seemed so relaxed flying through them. Another one for the underrated players list. https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m001p94b/blur-at-the-bbc

I think I’ve spoken with Andre on Facebook a few times in the past. Always very helpful and informative. I will at some point place an order @Andre_Passini 😄 just waiting for the right project pieces to fall into my lap.

May have already been posted but it’s the first time I’ve come across a short scale Gibson Thunderbird. Limited edition run of 400 circa 2011. -

Having read all of your replies, advice and experiences and loads of other stuff online, listened and watched quite a few videos - which are always a mixed bag depending on how they were recorded, I’d narrowed my choice down to two. Both were fretless 4 strings, because there really doesn’t seem to be many 5’s available and I didn’t want to stretch to or wait for a Kala California. They’re both 23” though I did wonder about a couple of 25” scale models. I’m going to be travelling about the country tomorrow so was trying to squeeze in an extra stop to attempt to grab one of the ones I’d found (finding anywhere that stocks these things is a bit of a task in itself) Whilst planning this I had another look on one of the major retailers sites and had a bit of luck….. I’d ruled out this option as I couldn’t find anywhere that stocked the particular bass I was interested in. After a bit of last minute faffing about it’s been ordered and should be with me in a couple of days. Pics to follow 🙂

Amazons search bugged me so much recently I complained on their live chat function. Absolutely pointless but I’m at an age now I enjoy complaining, even to a human less bot 😄 I’m sure it used to better than it currently is. I hadn’t used the app for years but it seems search results are 50% irrelevant. I’m having very little joy finding 5 strings.

Yeah not a fan of those stripes either.

Hello all. Some of you may have seen my Uke post in General and some have replied, thank you. Though I’d drop in here and bother you some more 🙂 As much as I enjoy researching instruments, borderline ocd, I also hate researching instruments 😄 I didnt there was so much choice, brands scale lengths strings etc. So far I’m feeling drawn to the slightly longer scales, 23” up but having trouble finding stockists and I guess being able to a/b them in one place may prove impossible. Is there much difference intonation-wise in the couple of inches of the Kala’s 20/21” and say the Shortbass or Goldtones that are 23/24”? Are strings more difficult to find for one or the other? There seem to be quite a lot of different types for the shorter scales, I presume they won’t work on the slightly longer scales or am i wrong?
-
Can you string a Baritone Uke with bass strings? Same piezo and scale? The nut would need filing I guess but otherwise are they any different?
-
Thanks @tauzero I’ve been having a browse online and they aren’t as readily available as I thought they might be. I’m finding quite a few Kala’s, rumble’s and other models but people don’t seem to be aware of models or specs etc. mainly lots of Chinese things no idea if they’re any use or just uke shaped objects 😄 Certainly not many 5 strings about and yes Kala’s are way more expensive direct from their own site than I’d anticipated.

I had that video as a teenager, probably still around somewhere. I had the same disappointment @Hellzero not just with the fretted bass. As stunning as his playing still was in parts of this I don’t think it caught him at his best.
-
That’s all really helpful @Smanth thank you. Surprised about the low B, I think I’ll be looking for a 5 string. I’ve played fretless in and off I’ve the years so that shouldn’t be an issue. Like you said I really need to try as many as I can lay my paws on. As it goes I’m in south wales far more than I’m up north these days.
-
@Smanth so solid body over hollow? Do they have issues with feedback? 5 string tuned E-C or B-G? Thanks for the other points, I’ll look at the sites and hop over to the thread on here.

Budget is open as until I know what I’m looking for I can’t say. Not sure what which is better or more double bass ish tone wise, as far as acoustic or solid, I realise it will struggle volume wise so no issue with using my Phil Jones for this. Same with fretted/fretless I remember reading a long time back that people had problems with frets and intonation and that maybe fretless was a better option. I’m open to advice on all of this.
