Looking to sell my MM Stingray 5 Classic in natural with a 3 band John East pre-amp fitted and probably the most highly figured birds eye maple neck and fretboard that you will ever see on a Stingray. This bass is in mint condition, it has never been gigged and even has the bar code sticker still on the back from when it was bought! The East pre makes it much more adaptable than the stock pre and it is an absolute monster with so much variance of tone available. There is a lot of sentiment wrapped up in this bass. It was built the day before my son was born in 2011 and I bought it so that he would have his own YOB bass should he ever take up the instrument but we have just moved house and money is a bit too tight to be tied up in luxuries like this! Comes with all original paperwork and Musicman hard case. Please no trades though!

Have to say that I am not a massive fan of those non cutaway designs I think the look weird - lovely wood though and good to see Bernie delivering something new.

Hmmm - could have sworn I said exactly that yesterday!
Hi Simon, I've replied to your PM with some of my views based on what you've said.... but also, from the above regarding isolation, those things should be snug in your ear. The isolation should be very noticable... like sticking your fingers in your ears. You should be finding it very difficult to hearing any sounds from around you. If you have a leakage, you'll be losing a lot of bottom end from the word go also.
Yep T3's are your problem here - the single driver just does not cut it for bass players I am afraid even though they are still bloody expensive. If you compare the T1 against the T3 they are like chalk and cheese, to put it simply to get the best bass response you have got to have a dedicated bass driver to handle all the low end that your bass will produce. I agree about speaking direct to ACS (go to Andy Shiach the MD) and see how you get on.
Sorry, slight correction - it's a set of T3's I have (single driver), not the triple driver T1's. I do suspect the seal might not be part of the problem, as just using them as earplugs, I'm really not noticing much attenuation of background noise. Might be quicker to contact ACS direct, rather than going through my local retailer (who have been OK, but it just adds delays).
This all sounds too familiar to me! I had ER-15's and then deceided to dip my toe in the water and try the ACS T-15 which replaced the filter and gave you a good entry level IEM but the result was horrendous absolutely no bass and bad distortion too, infact the buds with my AT IEM system sounded 100 times better and gave so much more bass. I went back to ACS (in person) and explained what I was hearing, their owner took time to sit down with me and was shocked that as a bass player I was told that the T15 route would work, he took out his brief case and let me listen to some tunes using the T1 triple driver IEM's through a generic headphone. I was blown away by the difference in bass response and the highs too. He gave me a cracking deal on the price to change and I ordered them there and then. I used them regularly on rehearsals in our studio and they always sounded great, loads of bass and they made rehearsals so much more fun it was like listening to a CD rather than us. So I would say that you must have a problem with the fit of your T1's, when I wear mind I can't hear anything in the room it is just like wearing ear plugs and that is what then makes the bass response so good. I am not sure that ACS could offer you a refund but they are a great company to deal with and I am sure will work with you until you can get it right.
Holla folks, just wondering if anyone here has had experience recently of ACS in-ears? Recently Mrs Simon. treated me to a set of in-ears to use as general headphones and for practicing at home. My old and much loved Sennheiser CX6's were starting to fall to pieces, albeit audio-wise they were still perfect, and a replacement was needed. A number of years back I got a set of ER-15 earplugs and they remain to this day the single best music related purchase I've ever made, so I was quite keen to go down the moulded route again. I decided on the ACS T1's, had the impressions done and waited a couple of weeks. Even though I was expecting and prepared for a different sound from what I was used to with the old CX6's, my disappointment on trying them was immediate! Decent clarity on vocals, but overall tinny and with no bass response at all. I tried A/B tests with my old headphones, and even a fairly cheap pair, and all had better response. I even felt that the right channel on it’s own was just about acceptable, but the left was unusable – real AM radio quality sound. So, back they went for a check over, especially as I, and others, felt that was a disparity between left and right. However, I received them back again this morning, with a note saying they couldn’t find anything wrong with them, and once again, IMO, they are just terrible. They suck the life out of anything, no bass response, and to be honest I’m not noticing any benefit of the supposed 26dB of isolation. Background noise levels are virtually identical with them in or out. So, does anyone know where I stand on getting a refund on these, considering they are a custom product? Also, I have wondered if they fit of the moulding might be somewhat to blame. They feel really comfortable to wear, but the lack of isolation makes me wonder if that might be the root cause. Any thoughts?
TC Electronic is definately better than Markbass !!
Gunsfreddy2003 replied to cliffyspliff's topic in Amps and Cabs
The RH750 is plenty loud enough - never had an issue with the volume it could output just the tone! Markbass LM3 into Bergantino 1x12 still takes some beating IMHO but am liking the EBS Reidmar into EBS 2x12 for something completely different!
Not tried the RH750 but I was underwhelmed by the tone of the RH450. As far as Markbass heads go, I've found my favourite with the discontinued TA-501. An LM3 into an Aguilar SL112 also sounded great, better than playing it through a Markbass cab.
-

Personally I couldn't get on with the TC stuff, sounded great at home but live it just seemed to lose the quality of tone at higher volumes. In terms of functionality and features they are way better though and I really wanted to love their stuff but my ears told me different!! -

Bumping this up to see if any Basschatters in the area fancy listening to some funk and disco grooves on Saturday? -
It's all coming from the EBS amp and speaker - nothing else gets a sound like that!

100% agree - I spent quite a bit of time with the Wonderlove at Bass Direct and found it very lacking as a filter and as you say really hard to get the funky squelch that should come easily from this kind of pedal. I also have to say that I had similar thoughts on the Proton too and being the owner of a MuTron I don't think it gets anywhere close! I have not tried a GR2 but have only ever heard good things about them and hence the reason you rarely see a second hand one come up for sale. The MXR is a great filter but as others have said it can lack a bit of depth but it is one the few that can cope easily with the super high output signal of a bass like my GB.
Hey Kev, From what I read the Wonderlove was marketed on the 3Leaf website as an improvement over the GR2; it’s Spencer’s ‘ultimate filter’ and it doesn’t get any better in terms of filters from 3Leaf. As I said earlier I have a deep love of the GR2 so bought a Wonderlove based on the fact is was hailed as an improvement over the GR2 but was thoroughly underwhelmed in terms of what the WL could do and how it could sound when A/B’d with the GR2. It may be that they’re based on different circuits - if I remember correctly the GR1/GR2 are Lovetone Meatball clones whereas the WL and the Proton are based on the MuTron III circuit. When I A/B’d them initially I set everything at mid-day on both pedals and I used a variety of different basses (active, passive, fretted & fretless) all at the same settings through the same amp. What struck me right away was the GR2 instantly bubbled into life whereas the WL had to be cajoled and tweaked before it started acting like I thought it should. Initially I thought I had a defective unit but no, it just needs more attention. I have a specific setting that I always return to with the GR2 so I set the WL up the way I have the GR2 – Sensitivity around 9/10 o’clock, Attack at 11, Decay around 1 or 2, Tone around 3, Range Low, Sweep Up, Mix/Blend around 2, internal switch set to Low Pass and trimpot at unity gain. Playing though the GR2 at these settings gives a wonderfully fat, full, deep, bubbly sound that’s full of vowels and you can’t help but mouth them while bopping your head back and forth, acting like some kind of weird funky chicken! When I set the WL up with exactly the same settings I was shocked. It’s nowhere near as responsive, the envelope barely opens with the sensitivity set at 9 o’clock where as the GR2 was bubbling away; it just didn’t sound as warm or rounded either, nowhere near as full or deep - to me it sounded thin and weak compared with the GR2. I persevered with WL for a month and experimented with the controls using various basses but I was constantly frustrated and underwhelmed so I just always went back to the GR2. It’s just a better filter and, for me at least, there’s no escaping it. The WL has some really nice features with the Low Pass/Band Pass switch and the Boost trimpot being moved outside the enclosure (the GR2’s Low Pass/Band Pass switch and Boost trimpot are internal and accessing them involves removing the cover) and the Expression Pedal input is also a nice touch but apart from that I just don’t see it being anywhere near as good (in my experience anyway) as the GR2. Finding an agent/booker for gigs.
Gunsfreddy2003 replied to Subthumper's topic in General Discussion
I think as a band we are happy to play anything apart from pubs - been there done that one! Our singer Dolly, has done so much good work ( highlight for me was watching her with JTQ at Glastonbury and Phoenix Festivals) that it seems criminal having to play pubs for a couple of hundred quid! We have so few incoming enquiries leading to a quote that it can't be the money we are asking for! I agree what you say about the keys, Dan is primarily a bass player who plays keys so his gear was a little basic but he has just invested in some better kit with more modern sounds so I think that should be solved now. The reality may just be that the requirement for disco and funk covers is limited and also already well served in which case then I have to wonder what future the band has - having said that I would rather play fewer gigs and enjoy the stuff I am playing than be out every weekend but having to play the latest sh*t off the radio!!!
Depends if you want weddings or parties.. I think parties are harder work in a sense, but you can call any function that is not a wedding a party so that can also go either way Not sure why you video isn't getting agents calling... depends how much you charge compared to who ever else they have on the books. One thing, I would cover in your band, or two things... one who is doing the BV's live, as that isn't clear from the real, and the keys sound needs a serious update. These may be things that set you back...but that was just from the 'Rock with you' track so maybe it doesn't jump out with other songs. The other things with function bands is that they can be a bit bland... whereas the thing round here is that the party bands are expected to offer more and be visually exciting as well as musically exciting..to justify the ramp up of the fee from the pub circuit. So, that means you are just a level down from a live concert but playing covers. Instead of getting them dancing from the off... get them singing ..the dancers will always do that but get a venue involved and singing along and you are a better night out to more people..IME. Dancing bands are for women mostly..and that is great and has its place..sings are for everyone..especially after a few drinks. Whatever it takes, participation is key.. If we do a party in the marquee, we need to be able to do the dance thing...and the singalong thing. If you think about playing something like 'wonderwall' where the singer doesn't even get to sing a note of it... then you are having a great gig
-
My band Soular are playing at The Wheatsheaf Inn, Leckhampton, Cheltenham on Saturday 5th April at 8pm. Putting this gig on to raise money for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Gloucester Royal Hospital who cared for my son when he was born 4 months early back in 2011. We play disco/funk & soul covers so if you like that kind of thing and are local then come along and have a boogie whilst helping to raise money for a great cause too. Had some good coverage in the local paper - http://www.gloucestershireecho.co.uk/Cheltenham-musician-play-Cheltenham-pub-gig-raise/story-20816887-detail/story.html#comments

Finding an agent/booker for gigs.
Gunsfreddy2003 replied to Subthumper's topic in General Discussion
Having the same problem as Subthumper - just can't get any interest from booking agents so taking on the role of getting gig myself which is not ideal or what I want but I know that if I don't do it then we will have no gigs! I have take a lot of advice from Russ (EBS Freak) as his band are mentally busy with function work but despite investing in a video etc we are still getting no uptake from agents and also very little from venues too. Makes me think that we are either too niche or have the wrong look/feel. Happy to take any constructive criticism - our website is www.soularfunk.co.uk -
My good wife got me tickets in November to go and see him at the Under The Bridge club in Chelsea and he was awesome - too damn funky!!

I have the Aguilar Filter Twin and the MXR BEF on my board and feel pretty well catered for now in the filter department! Both are so good that my vintage Mu-Tron III now has no place! It is important to remember that some filters work better with active basses and some are much better with passive basses and also the ability to dial in clean signal is key too. The MXR scores on the clean tone dial in and works great with active basses even my GB which has a super hot signal but as a previous post mentioned you can't switch the filter sweep up or down as can with others such as the MuTron and the Filter Twin which is a shame as it is another really useable sound.

Love it - just my cup of tea!

I wasn't there Mick, I spent all day playing at a Wedding Fayre!!!
Me and my germs have been back a few hours but for some reason I can't upload my photos to photobucket so we'll have to really on everybody else's for now....was it me or did it seem like numbers were down on last year?? Really enjoyed the day, meeting up with lots of BCers who I already knew - hello again to Bluejay, Lozz, Kiwi, Happy Jack et al - unfortunately missed meeting up with Gunsfreddy who I've done a couple of deals with and also with Scooby who was the original owner of my Ritter. I'm sure that we'll meet up with in the future fellas...also briefly saw SiBob modelling a (superb) Silver Surfer bag which I need to steal from him when he puts it down near me. Had a quick chat with our own Doctor of the Bass, Nick Smith, who was one of those being paid to demonstrate some basses with fabulous pick ups (sorry the name eludes me) but being berated here for his slapping. I managed to miss the "slap battle" between him and whoever was on the Anaconda stall. Most of the exhibitors were very friendly, Alan from ACG and Bernie Goodfellow competing for title of "Nicest fella in the World" - sorry guys, it was a dead heat for me. I own one of each and both nearly had me reaching for credit cards...I somehow managed to resist their beautiful creations. Really enjoyed the seminar by TM Stevens - the man certainly knows how to entertain and if ever decides to give up playing bass he's got a future in motivational speaking. Not sure how I would have felt if I'd been one of the two lads he called on stage to perform on Drums and Bass together but both rose to the occasion and equipped themselves admirably. An experience neither will forget I'm sure. Must also be true for the other young fella who TM had playing a single note just ahead and behind the groove. TBH I was a bit disappointed in John Taylor's seminar - would have preferred more playing than what felt like an exercise in selling his book. Highlights of the day for me were chatting to Yolanda Charles and Scott Devine, both really down to earth and willing to chat. Even had a compliment from Scott about my beard which he is threatening to imitate.
Did Bernie have a stand? Did not see a GB listed in the exhibitor listings?
I'm with ezbass on the show summary. I was hoping to get some strings and new guitar lead, but no real choice on offer. Noise was down but still exhausting. I also noticed that Bernie Goodfellow looked somewhat pissed with noise from his neighbours, trying a bass is one thing but organised bass duet sessions on a stand ?? he should have a refund. Are these available to buy yet? Just checked out my usual suppliers on the web and none have them listed yet?

Met them after the show at Jazz Cafe last year and they were all top people but Andrew is a top, top man and so cool!
