Envelope filters that can handle a very hot input signal
Gunsfreddy2003 replied to Gunsfreddy2003's topic in Effects
Which one do you like best?
I have an MXR M82 (as mentioned above) plus a 3Leaf Audio GR2 which also has a sensitivity control. Both pedals work incredibly well with my active fretless. Very easy to dial in some nice squelchy, quacky funk!
-
Envelope filters that can handle a very hot input signal

Yeah, I have a Mutron III and the problem is that unless you have the gain up high it does not sound so good! Interestingly, the Mutron sounds great with a passive jazz or the 77 Stingray but the GB is just too hot for it!
The Mutron III has an input gain control too
-
Envelope filters that can handle a very hot input signal

Had one of these a couple of years ago and sold it as it was not needed but I was using different basses then. Shame is that I love my Aguilar Filter Twin but it just can't cope with the Rumour!!
The MXR M82 bass envelope filter has a "sensitivity" control so you can easily set how much of the signal is effected, and therefore how much dynamic quack you want. Consider this pedal man, it's amazing, and it will give you the control that you're looking for. Your uber-hot signal is not a problem. Dial that quack to suit your bass ... really
-
Evening all, Recently took possession of my spangly new GB Rumour 5 which is all good but these basses are renowned for their phenomenal on board EQ and thus have a very hot output signal. Problem is that I am struggling to get any of my envelope filters to cope with the signal, it is so hot that the filters won't open properly and thus I can't get my normal quacks funk sounds! I wonder if anyone can recommend a filter that works well with such a powerful input signal?

I have decided to move on my Audio Technica wireless in ear monitor system (IEM) as with my current band we do not have the facility for me to be able to use this effectively so it has to go. This is the M2 system and comprises of the bodypack, 2 channel receiver and ear buds. It is a really adaptable system that allows you to run a stereo mix to both ears or split the signal left and right and have say your bass in one ear and the band mix in the other and you can then blend on the fly to your liking which is pretty cool. I have done a quick search on the web and they seem to be going for about £450 ish so I have posted the link below which gives you more info on the product from a retailer: http://www.soundexpo...CFW3KtAodIkMAKQ The link below is to the Audio Technica site which gives you the full spec on it http://www.audio-tec...2859d6112bfbaf/ In addition to the standard system I also bought the Audio Technica AM3 ambient lavalier mic which you can plug direct into the bodypack and this gives you as much ambient sound as you like (level can be adjusted on the pack) and this is great for taking away the feeling of isolation that you can get with sealed buds in your ears and and IEM system. Details on the mic are here: http://eu.audio-tech...=47&prodID=2008 I think this cost me about £85 but is worth it and is a really useful addition to the set up. I can post pics if anyone wants to see but it is all in original condition and comes with all packaging/boxes etc.

The Squeezer is something I considered strongly before buying the Deep Impact but it looked far too complicated for someone like me to use! Also tried the Mark Bass Super Synth and that was the same, too feature heavy and tricky to edit sounds. What I love about the Deep Impact is that you have some great sounds in it, which for me nail that 70's synth bass sound at the touch of a button and with no messing around required and for that reason alone it gets my vote every time. Yes I wish I had one that cost me £85 but it didn't and for the money I spent on it I am very happy. If you want that sound you have to get the Deep Impact!!
I still have mine. I bought it for 90 quid in 2003. It tracks better than anything short of Steve Chicks revamped Industrial Radio MIDI synth system...particularly loves single pickup basses such as P's or stingrays. However a potential competitor is the Chunk Systems Octavius Squeezer although I have not bought one yet and have been discouraged by a two knob interface and no USB programmability. The SB1 was never overhyped by Akai - it has a limited range of sounds but most of those sounds can be slotted straight into a song that someone has recorded in the past and they sound warm and fat. This makes the pedal UTTERLY fantastic for function bands and funk/disco covers. I Feel Love ? Right there. Rubber bandy synth bass from a Chicane tune? It's right there. Is it worth 700 quid? No, absolutely not, it's stupid money and I'd happily sell mine for that given its more than an Octavius Squeezer now. But I haven't tried a Squeezer yet to know how it stacks up to a Deep Impact to make that choice. So in the meantime, it's still a great pedal. I think Akai should do a re-release. I think Eventide could use the tech in their Pitchfactor pedal to do a pedal that is better.
Not true - I went down this route and yes you can get some interesting sounds but it is not that excellent synth sound that you can get from a Deep Impact, it is pretty unique on that front!
Buy yourself a boutique analogue fuzz, envelope filter and pitch shifter for the same money and have a hell of a lot more or, if you want the cheesy sounds, buy a synth

Thought it was taking a long time to finish Mark !!!!thought you had changed your mind on the body shape, getting it cut into a flying v shape!!!!!Hope shes all you hoped for.look forward to the photos.cheers andy. I didn't pay that much for mine but I do have to say that no other synth pedal I have used comes close to the sound you get from one of these. For me, all of the synth sounds that I was looking for are there straight out of the box with no faffing about required, which suits me well. It's only downside is that live it tends to lose all of your bottom end so it is imperative to use a pedal or loop that allows you to mix in some of your dry signal too.

Do I want to sell my Bergs and go Barefaced?

Sell your Bergs and go EBS - better still keep em all and buy a bigger flat/house whatever!! -
Hi all, I have been using the Jam Up app on the iPad for a while and have to say it is great for rehearsing songs as it has some really good features. One of the most useful is being able to drop the tone of an original recording tone dome or up in semi-tone steps. I use this a lot as our singer has a lowish tone and we normally have to shift things down a bit for her to be comfortable. Problem I have is that since upgrading to iOS 7 on the iPad the jam function on Jam Up has stopped working. The bass signal goes in fine but in the jam section where you play along to the record as soon as you play back the track the bass signal cuts out which makes the whole thing useless as you can't hear yourself! I have looked on the web and it seems like there are some major issues with iOS 7 and music making apps so guess a patch will fix it in due course. However I am having to learn two new tunes for Weds and need to find something else to use for one that can drop the tone so that I can play along. Anyone got any ideas or recommendation for something that you use that works well?

I picked this up in August and it is a fantastic bass, will try and get some decent pics up when I have 5 minutes to take them.

Mrs FF sounds like a star and you sir are a very lucky fellow!!
Fair enough. I'd agree that the ideal is a one trip load-in/out, but I'm probably a way off that because of all the other bits I tend to bring along for the rest of the band. But at least they are all easily carried. Actually, if I could drop all the ancilliary stuff, I could probably do a one trip load in/out if I put the BH250 and bass in my soft case over my shoulders, leaving both hands to carry one of the cabs. I guess a lot depends on locations and travel arrangements. I'm fortunate that Mrs FF usually comes with me and is happy to sit in the car while I do my two (or three) trips before going off to park the car and walk back to the venue. The same thing works very well in reverse. Now if only I could get her to carry all the gear as well . . . .
Perhaps I had a duff one then! Point I was making is that for me I like to load in to the venue in one trip and that means only using 1 cab another not 2, I achieve this with the Mark Bass head and one of the 1x12 Berg cabs in all sorts of venues and have never felt underpowered but with the BH250 I got nowhere near this hence why I sold it on!!
I've got a BH250 plus RS210 and RS212 cabs. I've rehearsed and gigged with just the 210, just the 212 and with both. I can't really remember the venues for each configuration because I've not had a volume problem with any of them, though I did an outdoor wedding reception with just the 212 (the 210 stayed in the car) without problems. I previously played with an Ashdown Mag 300 Evo II and various combinations of Mag210/Mag115 but mainly 2x Mag210 and I've not noticed any volume problems with the BH250 config - though my back is happier. I'm not pretending this is a definitive answer, more to illustrate that asking this sort of 'loudness' advice comes with so many variables that it probably renders any answers not too helpful. The only real way to be sure is to try one for yourself. I don't get the logic of your last point - I'd rather carry more light items than fewer big and heavy ones.
Stu Zender played on the released single so if you ever hear it on the radio that will be his version. Essentially the chorus bassline is totally different. I personally prefer Zenders version, as others have said it just seems more focused and tight with a better groove. I think that he played on everything but this version of Space Cowboy on their 2nd album it was Emergency On Planet Earth that had Andrew Levy and others on it.
I'm confused here. The Mr. X version you mention is stated as being the album version on that vid, and it sounds like the one I know and love from the album. Why wouldn't Stu Zender, who was a full time member for the second album, be playing on the album's title track? Weird. But, I suppose saying that it's amazing how little he actually recorded for the first album. A few sessioners laid most if it down before he got the job I believe, including Andrew Levy from the Brand New Heavies. This is the only version of Space Cowboy I've ever heard. Anyone got a link to the one Stu Zender did play on? Would love to check it out.
