1. Great review Shep - thanks for posting your thoughts.
Thumpinator - Recieved from Finbar this morning on loan... Given it a solid 3 hours of drum & bass including A/B'ing my entire setup with and without it. 1st thing I noticed is how little my speakers move anyway, even with huge volume an lots of octave etc. They wibble a little with heavy fuzz, but did so also with the Thumpinator engaged. There appears to be no increase in available volume, no change to click and thump from the attack of the strings and no change in the tightness of the bottom end. Certainly nothing like the Gramma pad achieved. One thing did change though... 1 pedal!? My EHX Bass MicroSynth. Mine is modded to control cutoff via expression. In the heel position you get a big smooth sub. This had always sounded massive, but with the Thumpinator at the end of the chain I had to lower the octave volume as it was moving the drum kit! What ever it does, it tightens up that pedal! Oddly it does not do anything of the sort for the Octave section of my MarkBass Super Synth, nor does it for my OC2. Maybe I should put the overall lack of difference down to the fact that the EBS HD350 & Neo 212 cabs are very good at taming dangerous frequencies and handling an awful lot themselves. The exception being, I assume, that the modded BMS generates some very low frequencies that the Thumpinator was able to help the amp/cab out with. Would I buy one - As it stands no. Take the BMS out of my chain and A/B'ing with & without makes no difference regardless of EQ settings, effects, volume etc. However, it does make the BMS crazy with the sub, which would give me more options for blending it as my 'constant' sub sound. That said it's still pretty monstrous without the Thumpinator. If someone parts with one and wants to sell it for a reasonable price I'd consider it for using at the end of my chain in the rare situations that I have to gig my set up through an amp or cab that may not be as 'capable' as my EBS stuff. Sibob - it's coming your way!
2. Would be very interested to hear how you get on with both together.
I had precisely the same thought last week - Gramma has arrived, picking up my Thumpinator soon!
3. So I am thinking that the Thumpinator and the Auralex Gramma pad would produce the tightest most focus bass sound that I have ever heard or could also be a wast of another £170!!
Not cheap. But if it works like I think it does, then it's cheaper than adding another cab to get that extra volume.
4. I'm sorry but just can't hear any difference in tone or sound - yes the speakers move less but really so what?
Thats the thing - you can see the difference - but can you really hear it? I like the idea of optimising my rig and have mulled with the idea of getting one of these for ages. Still on the fence.
5. Why not? BTW Peter did you see this on Ebay today? Pre EB Stingray
Don't do it Mark!
6. So if I can get someone in the states to buy and take delivery then I could get one? Can someone send me the link to follow for these?
Still not read anything on either tb or the EBMM forum, Seems like the best bet
7. Theory makes sense, has anyone used one and if so with what results?
It cuts everything below 30Hz. Your cabs probably wont make much use of the stuff below 35-40Hz. This could effectively allow you to produce more useable bass as the drivers wouldn't be straining from trying to cope with unused frequencies.
8. Can't quite see that it would really work though!
Bandwidth Optimiser. Basically it allows your amp/cab to run more efficiently by rolling off the really low frequencies. Hence 'Thumpinator'
9. What does it do to your sound and what are you using it with?
Got the Micro Thumpinator in the post yesterday
10. Oh yeah I forgot that they worked on them too - didn't your PSU for yours come from them? Either way it is a great price for a vintage 'tron and I wish it had been about when I bought mine.
I'm not sure, but I think Nick might have put it in to The GigRig as they were the guys that did mine. As I said not sure though. I'm sure Nick will be along soon to spill the beans
11. I would suspect that it is was Lingenberg Sound in the States if I had to guess!
Where did you get it serviced? I need to do mine.
12. Looks very guitar focused - does he actually play bass?
Yeah, excellent and cool professional tutor called Chris at http://www.guitology.co.uk/index.htm, helped my playing immensely
13. Is it ready for delivery this week if I order today?
Hi guys, Thanks for all the interest in this book! Yes, it is indeed very nearly ready. It's finished and is currently with the printers. I am expecting a proof copy early next week and once that is approved, I will begin taking pre-orders - keep an eye on the site (or email newsletter if you subscribe) for updates. I estimate that it should begin shipping the week after (20th June-ish). It's been a fun book to transcribe and write, so I really hope you all like it! Stuart
14. Never heard of Reaper but will check it out - looks good.
That could be GB. I like using GB for it's simplicity & quickness, but you'll get a much better recording using something like Reaper, which you can download & use unrestricted without having to pay for it & if you use it a lot then it's something like $99. I don't do much home recording (due to lack of time from being on BC ), but if I did, I'd happily pay for Reaper.
15. Thank you very much!!
Just had a listen to some of your stuff on MySpace. Funky as!
16. Not sure about that!! At the moment I am just trying to hear the subtle differences between the Sadowsky and Aguilar pre-amps to see which sounds best - a bit dull sounding really!!!!
Glad to have helped. Now you need to post your recordings when they're done
17. What have you got for sale?
Great, thank's I'll get siftin through the unused pedals in the wardrobe to raise some fundage thanks a lot. T.
18. First up get the Brown Dog as it is an awesome pedal and works brilliantly with their Agent OO Funk pedal too. Using the import duty calculator that Shambo linked to it looks like the total cost would be £205.94, in which case I would go to Bass Direct as it looks like they are still selling them for £200 + £4 shipping. Link below: Bass Direct Brown Dog price A definite no brainer to me! I have imported many things from the States and have yet to get away with not paying import duty and VAT!!
Morning fellow BCer's I've recently I 've been looking at getting one of Chunk Systems Brown Dog fuzz pedal. but I'm torn between gettin one from the states or buying from over here as the ones in the states are cheaper inc postage. on previous exp.when I have bought from overseas(states)I have been hit with import taxes from Royal Fail. My question is how much import duty would i be expected to pay on a pedal costing £162+£9.00 postage
19. That seems to have worked - I had the input set as stereo! Many thanks.
It sounds like an issue with your interface. Your interface might think it's only getting one channel (either Left or Right) & sending just that side. Can you switch it to mono? If not, then on your track you're recording to then select Input Source & chose something mono. I record my bass in mono.
20. Hi, I am recording bass into Garageband using an M-Audio Fast track interface. When I record I can hear the bass in both ears of my headphones but when I listen to it in playback it is only coming out of one ear almost like it is in mono. What am I doing wrong - do I need to select stereo from a menu somewhere? Also the bass sounds like it is clipping or distorting - any ideas why?
 21. The wife just bought a nice DSLR camera so should be able to get some good pics now. Yes prices seem to be going up so hopefully pre EB's are still a good investment? Only downer is it looks my band is on the verge of break up so may not get to gig the Stingray for a while now!!
I can't wait to see it! And look at these recent prices
22. I know! Mine is back on Wednesday so I will show you what a proper fret job should look like!
You and your frets Mark! I reckon thats a re fret from the signs around each fret edge? It does have a certain something though. Its a real shame about the damage although a good luthier could sort it no doubt, At least you can see whats there rather than have a bodge cover job.
23. Shame as otherwise it is perfect. Something also isn't quite right with the frets in that neck pocket shot - looks like they don't fit flush??
Almost fell in love with this a moment ago until I noticed the neck pocket! Done by the previous owner inspecting for a date, Ouch. He has some serioussly nice gear coming in and out. http://www.andybaxterbass.com/details.php?id=183 I did notice that it says no damaged or missing parts other than the rubber pads but the springs are missing? They could be included in the sale seperatley I guess but why would anyone take them off as thats how they get lost in the first place.
24. Yeah I use Amplitube 3 on my MacBook but can't seem to get any drum loops into it like I can with Garageband. The Ampeg envelope filter in the Custom Shop is awesome though!!
TBH I've not messed with it much but Garageband and Amplitube but you'll need an adaptor as well. I personally like Amplitube the most as a bass practice tool as the Ampeg sim is a really nice tone.
25. I am just about to get an ipad2, what do you recommend as the best software to use for recording on them?
Cheers man, I should really get a baby quasar again or a quasar deluxe since I can see where it would go if I dropped the Chili boost off the board and move the noise box to it's place. I've got another picture with this all wired up and my Kimbara wah, I should really send it you to try it so cool probably not your thing due to the subtley well that and that fact the switch is near knackered on it. I just need to find a way to directly upload my recordings from the Ipad onto the web and then I'll get into full on soundclip mode again.
